When OM System (successor to Olympus Cameras) launched this new body type: smaller than the flagship OM-1 with almost all the features but with a retro look and focuses on their computational photography, one of the biggest criticisms was at $3000 it was too much.

So, now you can pick up the camera body only, for about $2200 Australian Stock!
It's $2525 but you can get a $300 Visa or Mastercard from OM System purchased before 30 June 2025 and claimed before 20 July 2025 when buying from approved retailers

$9 delivery for me but they have $10 off for joining up with their Digiclub

Surcharges: 0% bank deposit, 0.95% on card, PayPal, WeChatPay, AliPay & UnionPay payments.

You can get price matches with Ted's Cameras (may take 2 days to match); I matched with my local Camera House (did it on chat on their website).

Thoughts:

  • at around $800+ off the launch price was very nice
  • menu system is a breeze compared to my Olympus M1 Mark iii
  • holding the camera is a little different ergonomically but I'm very happy
  • the rear button layout of the OM-3 with the menu button near the central directional pad is better than the OM-1
  • very nice aesthetics
  • lovely camera to use
  • micro four thirds and hits a sweet spot for portability with powerful features and weather sealing

I'm posting this because other photographers who wanted the camera still thought it was $3,000 everywhere

  • This or sony a7iv?

    • This

    • +1

Depends which one you have used before, just like phones you tend to get locked in since the UI is manufacturer specific .. The Sony is a full frame this is a micro four third ..both are excellent but if you haven't had either before I would go the Sony simply because it is a more popular format and lenses are cheap (erish)

      • Thanks.sony to go with. First time buying. Waiting any deals.

Is live now but ends tmr. $2269 for Sony FF a7cii is a great deal imo, and that's before any other offers, flashbacks which usually stacks.

          • @lawyerz: Never heard of this one. Is it better and never than a7iv

            • @Zeee: It's the a7iv in a smaller body, better in some ways even, like dedicated "ai" chip for autofocus - realistically in the real world you won't even notice the difference. It's also much newer and as you already know, the a7v is coming out soon. If you were considering the om5 mark3, I would have thought the a7cii is the best comparison instead of the a7iv.

      • Also sony a7v is on the way

        • Depends on your budget mate and also what are you looking to do with camera mostly?
If you are going to be filming a lot then Sony cameras are superb or even Lumix S9 which is also Full frame. You can buy Panasonic Lumix S9 body for $2k on deals with lens. L mount lenses are also available on Sigma/Viltrox/TTartisan.
If budget is not an issue, Sony A7iv is great hybrid shooter and may e mount lenses available.
OM system uses Micro 4/3 mount and has a much smaller image sensor and hence the smaller size.

          • @codename47: Budget is around $3k
            Waiting a7v

            • @Zeee: Sony A7iv is around 3k for body only which is a good price for it. Sony A7v will be around 4k or more I think

              • @codename47: 3k for a7iv, not a good deal. i will still wait a7v. Its gonna launch in July. If too high then prices for a7iv would drop

                • @Zeee: Yeah, these don't really lose much value.I sold my Sony A7iii body only for $1500 after 3 years of use. Bought it for around $1700 I think.
I am happy with my recent purchase (on pre order) Lumix S5iix.

                  • @codename47: Is it you downgraded?

                    • @Zeee: Nope mate! Lumix S5iix can shoot 6k Open gate where as A7iii can only do 4k. Lumix has PDAF where as A7iii doesn't. Lumix is recent where as a7iii was old plus I did not like the colors coming from a7iii at all.

They're very diff. I have had the Olympus EM5 MK2, Olympus EM5 m2 and Pana g9 so was deeply invested in m4/3 glass. I've sold most and am now in Sony, and I've owned the Sony a7iv and now a7cii.

Is fun and lightweight more important to you, or serious and good low light and amazingly quick autofocus more important?

Fun, small, lightweight, and enjoyable to shoot = Olympus. Their prime lenses are fantastic, small, cheap, and bloody sharp. Esp 2nd hand.

Serious, amazing autofocus, and great low light = Sony. But small lenses are far and few in between, most are bigger and much more expensive, inevitable from the larger sensor.

Do you see yourself being seriously invested in this for the long haul? Then Sony. Om prices are really high for the little to none improvements over the years. Are you starting out just as a fun hobby? Get a second hand Olympus EM5 mark 2/3 or em1 mark 2/3 for fraction of this.

      AMA.

while I'm seriously impressed with the Sony, I had more fun with the Olympus, if that makes sense. One of my favourite was 75mm f1.8 lens which simply does not exist in the full frame world without it being massive and heavy.

      • 75mm f1.8
        Wildlife, event, long distance portrait?

        • +2

Nope just travel and casual street, absolute favourite of all time lens. 15mm f1.7 panaleica lives on my body most of the time, but when the 75mm comes out, boy do I fall in love with it again and again. Once thought it was such a large lens, then I move to FF and I miss it so much.

        • +1

Did you end up getting this as well despite already having the em1 MK2?

          • +1

            @lawyerz: I did get the OM-3 :D

I've only gotten it recently; slightly different results to my em1 Mk3 taken shooting portraits outdoors at night. It's a nice camera :)

I've forgotten the name but the computational graduated ND is so quick and easy to set up. Moving the gradation around takes less than a second to get it where you want.

I mainly do portraits (45mm f/1.2 and now 25mm f/1.8 ii) and the 12-200mm is very nice for concerts and photography in general.

      • +3

Agree with your synopsis. I jumped from Olympus to Fujifilm immediately after they announced they were selling their imaging division and for me it made the most sense because I still have that fun factor taking photos with my Fujis.

However… recently Fujifilm prices have gotten absurd mostly thanks to the TikTok crowd turning the X100 series into near godlike status.

IMO the E-M10ii is still probably the best value for an entry level but fun little camera that you can pick up for cheap secondhand. An E-M5iii would be the next best option as the increased resolution at 20MP is the sweet spot, while adding better ibis, phase detect AF, high res mode and a bunch of other features but they are still not as cheap as I expected them to be at this point secondhand

        • I have an em10ii and love it, so small but easy to get really good photos.. recently picked up the 12-50mm lens with macro function so I can digitize some old film, but that lens although physically long has great flexibility.

Only thing I dislike about em10ii is no ability to add an external mic for any video, I think em5 series has that function though, or most of the Panasonic equivalents.

For the vast majority of people the Sony.

M43 is now a more niche product as the popularity has waned and OM the only manufacturer still actively making cameras for the format. There are hardly any new lenses being made for the system.

APS-C ,Full Frame and Mobile have really eaten into its market share and squeezed it out and makes it a self fulfilling prophecy as less investment means dated sensor compared to other formats so unless you have a specific use case (birding, outdoor/hiking and need to pack light) its probably not as suited for most people now.

      • +1

also travel photography or a go-anywhere that gives power without taking up a whole bag.

If you want to take shots while out walking, street photography, bring in your bag to a party or a concert, or while you go hiking or sight seeing or doing long wildlife photography trips, a micro four thirds camera like the OM System units can be perfect for you and it's not going to take over your backpack or bag.

A big part of micro four thirds is how active you'll be when you are out shooting and how much gear do you want to carry (full frame lenses can take over a backpack pretty quickly).

If you realize OM System gives you everything you need and want, then you can do away with the bulk of many other systems and discover the OM System's OS and features make photography and videography a very enjoyable experience.

It also is a good kit to try out other kinds of photography like astrophotography (shooting the night sky), macrophotography and light painting.

        • Other formats have taken over this space to a degree. If you want ultimate space saving then a Pixel Pro is pretty decent for a lot of people.

For those wanting flexibility of an interchangeable system then APS-C have come a long way with sensor tech with Fuji leading the charge and is not that much larger. Even FF has entered this space with the A7C line. It's still bigger (when taking into account lenses) but manageable (I am the target audience for wildlife/outdoor and have moved to the A7C)
I have owned m43 in the past I enjoyed it, still has its place, but for most people if they are investing into a new system m43 would not be my first choice (unless birding where crop factor vs weight really comes into play). Chris from Petapixel still uses m43 when he films his flyfishing show.

      • +2

Has Panasonic stopped making m43 cameras? I mean the GH7 is quite new, no? I know Panasonic also has their FF cameras but are they transitioning out of the M43?

        • +1

The G9ii came out less than 2 years ago.

          • @dav3: My bad, I forgot that they released this, but still, there has hardly been much development in this space especially compared to other categories

        • Panasonic is still making M43, new models are coming out. Leica is still selling their compact D-Lux 8 based upon Lumix LX100 II internals.

  • +3

Micro 4/3rds is an amazing entry point to hobbyist photography, IMO.
Second hand gear is a fraction the cost of new alternatives and provides a great trade off for portability against full frame or APS-C alternatives.

You can produce very high quality wildlife shots and portraits. You can take landscapes where you would kill yourself dragging bulky full frame gear along.
You miss a little at the other end with very wide field of view and very short depth of field - but the 1.7 and 1.8 lenses I have provide such a compressed focus depth I can’t imagine wanting much shallower.

All that said, $2500 for a new body is crazy, even though I know everybody is charging that these days.

    • -1

Is it really more portable though? The body is the same size as the Z fc. Sure if you keep a pancake lense on it'll be tiny, but once you put a zoom in there's really not much difference to an apsc setup. Maybe at extreme focal lengths this would start saving weight due to higher crop factor, but there really isn't much benefit on "everyday" lenses

      • The lenses are small and comparatively cheap.
I can pop a Tele or long zoom in a pocket.
But I’m not buying new gear for new gear prices. I think secondhand it has compelling value because the cutting edge of tech is elsewhere, resulting in low prices. So ozbargain thinking not dpreview thinking.

        • +1

Yeah the super discounts on new gear, like the OM-1 for $1440 earlier this year, or the GX-9 for $500 when it EOL'd have been very hard to beat also. Gotta say after a few decades doing photo stuff the dpreview set of photographers just get more and more embarrassing to read, most people who actually spend time using their gear and taking/selling photos have a variety of bodies and formats and appreciate their strengths and weaknesses.

    • +1

Each has its merits. Lots of people run two systems: Full frame for wide (landscape) and low light, M43 from long telephoto as its lens are much lighter and smaller.

  • -1

Yikes $2.3k for a micro four thirds?

This body is probably the same size as an a6400 or xt30 ii if not bigger while being the price of an a7cii. $2.3k would get you an apsc body plus trio of f1.4 primes or 18-50 f2.8 already and would take waaay better shots than this.

I just don't see the benefit, either get a 1" like a g7x or rx100 for total portability or an apsc c that's gonna be the same size as this.

    • Better yet get the new Sigma 17-40 1.8

      • Would love to get my hands on that. Abit exxy though and it's one chonky boy

  • It worked out better if you caught the Camera House eBay deal, down to $2399 (with the 20% off) less $300 gift card = $2099 with free delivery. IMO it is still over priced and a little on the large size for my liking.
