Personally would avoid Arlo with their terrible (subscription) service.

    • Literally this

    • Camera also doesn’t support rtsp/onvif so you’re locked to their awful ecosystem.

    • +1

You can consider a self hosted solution if you want to avoid that and you can have continuous recording. Of course you will need to do some tech work to get that working.

FYI i have done exactly that and use frigate for motion detection and recording

      • You mean with Arlo cameras?

        • +2

Yes, i have 3 arlo they are great as they are clear and 180degree wide

          • @kelvinsmj: What tech are you using to stitch it all together (I can do the deep dives if you set me off in the general direction :p)

            • +1

              @isthisreallife22: arlo-cam-api

Not rocket science. Just follow the instructions and you should be good.

The idea is basically teying to create a virtual base station replacing the one that comes with the camera (the box behind the camera in the above picture).

Feel free to reach out if you need any help.

              • @kelvinsmj: Are you used Scrypted for this?

                • +1

@thedean: I am using frigate as "nvr" and arlo-cam-api for virtual arlo hub

                  • @kelvinsmj: I wasted a lot of time looking into Scrypted before finding out it was not free, even though it's self hosted…

                    • @thedean: I find frigate is good. You can pay for them to train the model up (price is quite reasonable) using your specific environment but I can't be bothered. It's good enough. I setup alert zones, masks etc and that solved most of my issues.

                      • @kelvinsmj: Looks like I missed out on the price anyway. Might see if I can get it working with my existing ring.

                        • @thedean: You sgould be able to get it to work with any cam with rtsp or other supported protocols, and your frigate can access the feed, preferably locally. I use a bunch of different brands of cameras (but no ring)

      • Please tell us more

    • I hapen to like their subscription system. Unlimited cameras (I have 14) for $15/month is a good deal.

      • +1

You're definitely getting decent value from that subscription with 14 cameras, but even so….a $350 NVR would pay for itself after less than 2 years.

        • +1

It takes up space, I need to maintain it, patch it, replace a faulty drive. Meh, I'd rather pay the $15. But I did consider it as an option. I totally agree their sub model is not worth it for 1 or 2 cameras, but unlimited is worth it for me.

      • Without internet, they lose all features like motion detection, alerts, live view, and smart detection (person/vehicle). Even with local storage via a base station, you can’t view recordings through the app until internet is restored.
        They’re essentially useless during outages

        • I have not tried it with no internet but there is an option in the app to view recordings on cloud or local.

  • How much do people pay if they did end up buying this for the services?

  • What's the little box shown in the pictures behind the 2 cameras? Are they selling these with an on-site Home-Base-style NVR these days?

    • The Ultra 2 needs an Arlo Hub, it doesn't connect directly to WiFi. If you plug in a USB storage device, then yes there's some level of NVR style, but given that everything is through the app, not very useful without internet.

    • The hub is a just their own wireless access point. Some of their cameras can connect to the hub OR your own wifi.

  • Perf, thank you so much! Arlo user of 5 years now. You dont have to sign up for their subscription service. You still get local recording but thats about it.

    • -1

Yeah but can’t remotely get access to any of the recordings without a subscription.

      • +1

you can if you are within your home network either physically or somehow remotely accessing your home network. I have been doing that until I switched to self-hosted virtual base station / hub option.

        • Yeah within home network is fine but not simpler for remote access. Others brand like Eufy, Tapo, and Reolink doesn’t need that nonsense and can be access without subscription.

          • +1

            @Smokey010: Different business model.

Arlo & Ring sell the hardware at cost, or perhaps even at a loss, to make money on cloud service subscriptions.

Eufy etc just sell you the hardware and have to make their entire profit on a single purchase. They usually do offer paid cloud subscriptions but almost nobody uses them.

        • They have a port forwarding option for your modem in the setting so you can access recordings off site.

          • @Grok: not advisable to open up ports to public unless you are sure what you are doing.

  • +2

Still using my original Arlo cameras with 7 day cloud. Having to pay a subscription for the latest versions is lame.

    • They're ending this aren't they? After the rugpull of the 'lifetime' subscription free, I'm staying clear of arlo

Switch all my camera system to Unifi Protect, couldn't be much happier.

    • +2

I'm sure it works really well, but a full Unifi Protect setup is extremely expensive and not really comparable.

It costs $1500 minimum for the most basic setup with 3 mediocre cameras, plus any relevant wiring & installation costs. It really only makes sense if you already have high-end Ubiquiti networking gear in your house.

  • The stock levels on the site is inaccurate because it said OOS but my local store had it.

  • I notice none of these cameras have a feature to tell you when they go offline, which is like a pretty big problem.

Also these prices are the result of the tapo wire free which are much cheaper.
