its 9 tsp sugar one serving with milk

I'm going to enjoy seeing the math on this one. Where are you getting this number from?

        • -5

look at total carb minus fibre and divide by 4. ignore the total sugar part as body break down carb to sugar. 24g carb in cereal and 12g in milk

            @dscott1234:

look at total carb minus fibre and divide by 4

Lmao. Do you also calculate how many tsp sugar is in your mashed potato?

        • While we're debating on what constitutes a proper big breakfast,

We havent even addressed WHAT metaphysical form in which ones bread manifests itself 😤

Is it fried? Toasted? Are you a heathen that has just plain, unbuttered bread? And is it a roll or sliced loaf? What version of spread or butter are you using???

Are. Your. Sausages. Cumberland. Or Lincolnshire???

          Honestly.

      • I'd limit processed meats to once a week. But the egg is great.

Scrambled eggs and a piece of wholemeal toast.

Porridge or “porridge” made with instant oats and water or milk, add flavour like vanilla or cinnamon or peanut butter. microwave and ready in a few mins. Cool it down fast by throwing in frozen raspberries and mixing it up.

Kids will eat things like sultana bran which are relatively decent.

sultana bran which are relatively decent

I mean, more sugar and less protein than this cereal. Not that decent?

        • It's loaded with fiber and the sugar isn't added, so healthier than most breakfast cereals but I still wouldn't eat it daily.

          • @topherboi:

            It's loaded with fiber

That's great! But low in protein.

            the sugar isn't added

Your body doesn't have hard feelings for where it came from lol

            • @DiscountForThee:

              So? Fiber is as important.

Your body doesn't have hard feelings for where it came from lol

No, but the addition of fruit into a diet assists with healthier eating habits.

Raisins in your morning cereal assisting with eating habits? Okay that's got to be the funniest one yet - good one lol

                • @DiscountForThee:

Raisins in your morning cereal assisting with eating habits?

                  Absolutely!

Children will then form a habit of reaching for fruit for a sugar fix instead of a bowl of breakfast dessert cereal.

                  • @topherboi:

                    dessert cereal

You bring this up when it has been highlighted that Nutri-Grainhas less sugar than saltana bran. So either you care about sugar or you don't. Which is it bud?

                    • @DiscountForThee:

So either you care about sugar or you don't. Which is it bud?

I care about people growing up with eating disorders because they are misled into thinking their bowl of cereal is nutritional, when in reality it just tastes good.

It's easy to say "just eat it in moderation" when that clearly doesn't work, especially when you've grown up eating it.

thinking their bowl of cereal is nutritional, when in reality it just tastes good

It has protein, that is an incredibly important part of nutrition lol, why do you keep forgetting this?

I care about people growing up with eating disorders

I grew up eating this, I still eat this, and I have no eating disorders. I am fit and healthy. Turns out there is more to nutrition than just what you eat for breakfast, huh?

If that's the case, why not just buy powered protein and feed that to them instead?

I never wear a seat belt and haven't died in a car accident yet, I guess everyone can stop wearing them now?

The fact that you think people are eating this for it's nutritional benefits is what's wrong with the food industry.

Lisa: Mom, Bart is on a strict diet of complex carbohydrates. Steak will make him logy.
Marge: Oh. Well, what won't make him logy ?
      Lisa: Oatmeal.
      Marge: Oatmeal?
Lisa: Oats are what a champion thoroughbred eats…before he or she wins the Kentucky Derby.
Homer: News flash, Lisa. Bart is not a horse. Eat your steak, boy.

So to answer your question, if you want your kids to win the Kentucky Derby: Oatmeal.

Since there is more sugar than protein, the marketing should be 'Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Sugar Breakfast Cereal'

It's for active bodies. If you are active, you need carbs for energy. You cant run xkms with just protein and fat (someone suggeted bacon).

Ofc if you're sedentary, then don't eat too much sugar

And as always, moderation. Mix it up.

    • Sugar hit (simple carbohydrates) only lasts 1 hour, and that can be followed by a drop in energy. You need complex carbohydrates if you want energy for half the day. Granted, there are probably some complex carbohydrates in Nutri-grain, but the sugar doesn't really provide you with any extra benefit other than taste.

      • Eat this, then go for a run. Nothing wrong with that.

Eat this and you sit wfh, yeah good luck.

Eat too big bfast, you get stitches going for a run after.

Balanced diet. Everything can be bad. Bacon? Sat fats. Coffee everyday? Dependance. Exercise? In moderation is enough.

Stop looking for one magic pill.

        To add:
        https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article/76/4/243/4…

Glycogen is replenished best a few hrs after exercise.

The sugar hit high is probably because you don't exercise so it just hits you. So for your use case, avoid this. For some active person, no issues in moderation.

        • Yeah I know. I've been stuffing myself with sugar for 20 years, even now, and still thin with no major health issues. It probably depends on your body type and lifestyle though.

        • Currently, the nutrition facts panel does not distinguish naturally occurring sugar from added sugar, but proposed changes to the nutrition label will eventually separate the 2 sugars on product labels. This is important because the current nutrition label identifies milk as containing 12 grams of sugar per cup, but this sugar is the naturally occurring milk sugar, lactose, not sugar added in processing.

They don't sound too keen on sucrose either.

    • The main issue is it's marketed to children/people with children, who make up the majority of their consumers. Eating this junk daily as a kid can have life-long consequences.

      • Eating this junk daily as a kid can have life-long consequences.

Eating anything in excess can have life-long consequences. You can eat this stuff daily for decades and be fine (read: very fit, very in shape, and healthy).

        • Of course, but children don't know that.

Eating habits form when you're young, so having a bowl of sugar-loaded cereal for a meal shouldn't be considered normal.
