Hard Shell Suitcases - 29L $119.95, 36L $129.95, 75L $189.95 Delivered @ Muji Australia

660

Was wondering what luggage everyone was using when on holiday in Japan and turns out it was Muji. I really wanted one to carry extra things back but it was selling for ~220$ AUD - $400 AUD and couldn't really justify it. Just checking prices in Australia and there's a sale so I picked one up and some other household stuff.

Just noting I saw a new version of this luggage with a front panel that flips open to store stuff on the go but was going for an extra $70~. Maybe this new variant will be replacing the existing one.

2.7kg, 2.9kg, and 4.6kg respectively if anyone was wondering.

    • +7

      That seems pretty heavy, no?

      • +2

That's why for years, just used carry-on with 28L 700g daypack for 4 week overseas trips. ($0 in Deal) Quite a weight & cost saving.

Have a similar 44L hard shell American Tourister Carry-on weighing 3kg ($30 in Deal).
It's never been on any of my overseas trips!
It's got deep scratches from being dragged along on a domestic trip. Never used again!
        Far too heavy.

      • +1

        Kmart's $79 large luggage is just 3kg.

    • Wondering heavy is good for local trips or train/bus trips?

      • +1

As I commented above, with a similar bag - the extra weight meant I dragged it on rough ground on local trip, rather than wheeled it. Quickly got scratched up.

Rough handling in baggage wagon on train resulted in smashed bottle of alcohol in bag!

        Never used it after that.

  • +1

Strange that the 36L one is 1cm longer in 2 dimensions than the carry on luggage allowance.

    • +6

I think different countries and different airlines have different dimensions so maybe it satisfies Asian dimensions? I never been checked before though

    • +4

Depends on the airline, jetstar is smaller than some others.

  • +3

Had one of these cases accompany me on 10yrs of 4-5 annual overseas trips as checked luggage and it's finally given out. Really happy with that lifespan

    • +6

you have 4 or 5 annual trips every year?

      • +1

I’m currently doubling that amount for both business and leisure o/s travel.

        Sometimes just a month 3x o/s travel

      • yep!

  • +1

Thanks @POSITIVEVIBESONLY. I've keeping an eye on these as I've wanted to buy the 36L carry size. Now purchased .

    • I was looking for a better carry-on and samsonite prices have sky rocketed over the last few years. Even with 40% it's a bit more.

  • +2

How do you know this is the luggage everyone is using?

    • -2

Is there any other luggage that looks like this one? Also they have that weird beige colour.

      • Yes - basically all modern day luggage looks like this - and in the exact same pastel colour choices.

Was wondering what luggage everyone was using when on holiday in Japan and turns out it was Muji.

    No it isn't.
    Sounds like an ad!

I have taken about 10 holidays to Japan.
Always with light carry on pack for 4 week trips.
Sent any shopping home rather than pay extra for baggage on discount flights.

    • +6

Shrugs* I just noticed it a lot travelling in Japan. Maybe all the posts on ozbargain are ads.

It's got decent reviews, cheaper than most other things, reputable company, free shipping, what more is there to ask for?

        • +5

I'm pretty sure most people are travelling with luggage.

            • @INFIDEL: It's more of a saying. Like "everyone is using whatsapp these days" or "tax deductions take forever"

                • +3

@INFIDEL: You're taking things personal mate… pipe down.

                  • -3

@Ziitek: …personal? Travel should be a personal experience. Enjoy it! Learn from it.
                    Rather than conforming😉

That's what I've been doing for years. Travelling up to 9 months a year, just enjoying travel. So many times in Japan.

Learnt from my early mistakes! So travel light.

It's ludicrous claiming we all use the same bag🤪
We're not all the same - something travellers quickly learn.

      ozbargain user discovers hyperbole

      • -5

Expect that in overhyped product marketing & clickbait.
But not in Ozbargain Deals & comments by members.

Not a complaint against the brand, just of the wording of this Deal.

    • How much is it to post home, say a couple of suitcases full.?

      • -5

Depends on many factors - weight, size, speed of delivery, & service you use. Do a search.

        Used those services long ago.
Now mainly bring back beautiful old Japanese clothes. So I wear them onto flight. Japanese love seeing it. Rather than send it home.

I give away my washed used clothes to homeless when leaving Osaka & Tokyo. . Creates more room in bag.

I take the minimum luggage (a day pack) to fit what I need on a trip, not for what I might want to bring back.
Gives me the freedom to travel & explore, without lugging unnecessary larger luggage.

Been successfully doing that on overseas trips since 2010.

Even if its an ad, Muji is too big a chain to suspect OP to be making anything from an ad for them. Just a recommendation for a good product.

Youtuber recommendation on the other hand never have anyone's best interest at heart and always aren't the best product in any category.

      • -2

Not criticising product, just overhyped wording sounding like an ad.
Bag may be popular, but not everyone travels to Japan with this as claimed!!
No wonder the brand likes this Deal!

        • +8

Gawd luv a duck - give it a rest.

We get the picture - you have been to Japan numerous times, and like to travel light.

          • -3

@jackspratt: Learnt from my mistakes through years of experience. Quickly learnt to travel light to enjoy travels more! Hop off flight & straight through customs before others pick up their bags.

Travelling for many years, Japan is just one of the countries I've spent time in😉

Have similar 44L hard shell American Tourister Carry-on weighing 3kg.
It's never been on any of my many overseas trips! Just a pain to travel beyond the paved city areas. Not a fan of being restricted like that in travels.

Wrote in Deal 13 years ago how popular this style of hard shell luggage is in Japan. Japanese are the main tourists in Japan, often on short trips. So these are popular & make sense.

So not surprising to see a lot of Japanese travelling with them there! Not necessarily Aussies.

Claiming this is THE luggage for travels to Japan is simply wrong! We don't all use these😖

@INFIDEL: You may travel Japan a lot, but after reading your repeated statements, i think you’re still a miserable & sad person.

              Almost feel sorry for you.

Are there any other luggage sites/brands worth considering at reasonable prices atm?

    • Samsonite has 40% sitewide. Although cheapest I could find was ~40-50$ more.

    • +6

Tosca. Australian made, lightweight. Have used them for many flights here and overseas and still great. Decent prices too.

      • +3

Wow. those are good prices, I might has got one instead if I saw this instead. Kind of deserves a post on it's own.

      • +1

Yes Tosca so-lite is a great carry on. Returned a Samsonite for it.

      • +2

Where does it say Australian made?

        • +1

Looks like i am wrong, sorry. I really thought i read Australian made on the ones we bought a few years ago but it seems its an Australian company only i think.

      • do you have a source for them being australian made? i didn't see anything on their site to indicate as such…

    • American Tourister is just slightly more expensive but lighter in the 36L/Carry On Clas

    • This held up up quite well for me for travelling to London. And it being light means you can use more of your luggage allowance on actual luggage.

You beat us to posting this offer! Yes, for a limited time, all of our best-selling suitcases are 40% off. Plus 20% off packing cubes and hanging pouches. Happy EOFY all :)

  • Some Japanese luggage has a stopper. It's designed for travelling by bullet train. When you put luggage at the end of carriage, it starts rolling into aisle. I think lock is useful. Personally I prefer lighter suitcase.

Stopper dial to hold wheels in place, preventing your luggage from rolling

  • This or the $40 hard shell 40L I see people buying overseas in Japan? Probably even less over in China! Quality looks good

  • +1

Size chart and weight which I found really handy.

Got one 105L, thanks OP. Checked some reviews online and seems Muji suitcases are quite reputable.

  • These are very good suitcases.

  • $5 off for first online order too, which is nice. (Email signup pop-up)

  • +1

    36L (approx. 55cm) luggage 🧳 is 2.9kg.
Way too heavy. Eats up almost half the carry on allowance.

Better off with a Samsonite Soft case 73H 1.9kg

    • +1

definitely don't need a hard case for carry on. lighter the better.

  • Been looking for a 75L for ages, this is perfect. Purchased!

  • bummer. thought about it and missed the red one.

  • Does anyone know if it is the same price in-store?

    • Can't edit the comment.

For anyone curious, yes, it is 40% off luggage in-store as well.
