How is this a deal when you can get it from elsewhere cheaper? Maybe they don't have a fan, but they are cheap enough anyway

    • I noticed some other options around, but most are smaller in size compared to this one. I'm building a small home lab and have been keeping an eye out for a cabinet like this. So I thought it was worth sharing once I saw the price drop.

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/vidaxl-12u-wall-mounted-network… is pretty much the same size. They are still 450mm deep.

So I thought it was worth sharing once I saw the price drop.

I am all for that and love a great deal. But this, in my view, isn't a deal when I can still save $70 elsewhere.

        • The reviews say the metal frame construction is well made and of good quality so that’s good to hear. Given it holds more weight than the cheaper alternatives this might be better depending on your needs

@freeb1e4me: I've bought one of these and it was well made and good quality. If you are wanting to really put weight in it, you put it on the ground and not on the wall or you give something that is free standing to take the weight.

          • @freeb1e4me: IMO, the problem is often there is pretty limited difference between good quality and poor quality racks. Most unfortunately, the difference in quality isn't relative to price.

        • fit a short depth server chassy in that 400mm depth and tell me 450mm is pretty much 400mm

Maybe they don't have a fan, but they are cheap enough anyway

It's just a cheap generic computer fan anyway, they can be sourced for ~$10 and easily installed.

      • +1

        Exactly right.

      • +1

The provided fan is noisy according to reviews

        • +2

Not surprised, it's a direct-powered fan so it will be running at full RPM.

  • Is this more to secure the network stuff?
I’m hoping to create a hub in my store/garage with a poe switch, pvr, modem and ups.
Any comments on if this would be ok?
    Thank you!

    • UPS would make it too heavy for wall mount. You are looking at a tall cabinet stand. Also, depending on it’s location you might want it to be recessed into the wall if space is limited

UPS would make it too heavy for wall mount

As long as you do it properly, it would be fine. I have wall mounted one with a UPS in it and it was fine.

You do have to be selective as a 2U/3U online UPS is around 30kg, the max loading is around 50kg to 70k, the cabinet is an additional 20-30kg depending on features/mounting hardware.

The rack can warp if you don't have a good amount of dynabolts to secure the weight on the frame, but most units can handle 60+ KG, along with the ~20kg of the unit.

For a homelab UPS, you can also just get an Ecoflow river 3 max plus for $800 or so, which has around 858wh and can run up to 600w loads, which is enough to keep a server + router online for 5+ hours in a blackout. possibly longer.

The reason you'd go with LFP over cheaper conventional line-interactive Cyberpower SLA batteries is the lifespan - most UPSs die in 2 years and need $100 in batteries to replace.

LFP lasts years longer, and with a ~30w load, even longer. LFP batteries are also lighter than VRLA/SLAs.

For under 100w use, LFP is cheaper over the long term. If you're running under 8 drive RAID (100-150w peak), LFP is viable.

Over 200w, SLA's might be a better choice for 1500VA to 2kVA UPS units ie Pure-Sine Line-Interactive units.

Over 500w, you might get into trouble with a 'consumer' UPS for gaming.

Is this more to secure the network stuff?

Yeah, kinda. But you can still get into it if you want to with a screw drive. The doors are flimsy at ttimes, but it can be a deterrent. It could stop your NVR from being stollen in a break in because its harder to access.

I’m hoping to create a hub in my store/garage with a poe switch, pvr, modem and ups.

It would be fine for that. I have a few 8RU racks in my sheds and house to keep things tidy. Makes it look tidy and neat rather than sitting on the shelf. In the house I have my network equipment inside on, NVR is currently on top of it and then 3 x UPS off to the site for powering it all.

In my garage, I have all my networking equipment in the rack including the UPS. It isn't wall mounted, but it is in the roof space neat and tidy, no rats to get in either.

  • Anyone seen any good options freestanding with wheels?

  • +2

This rack looks similar to the 6RU rack I bought recently. They're probably all from the same factory with different brand names stuck on.

To me, you get what you pay for, it is cheap compared to racks my work uses but it was pretty weak material too (not too dissimilar to a coke can haha).

If you are okay with used item, you should be able to get a better quality item for cheap/free.

Can I put my 3D printer inside?

    • Maybe

  • Actually… Somehow I've never seen white ones before… Bought black one recently but now I am thinking the white on would look better in my case.
Not sure if can of white paint would be a good idea. :)

  • any reco for a cheap rack shelf that can be installed on this? my switches at home are not rack mountable.. TIA!

    • +1

Have a look at Radio Parts that is where I have often got my shelf units from.

  • Anyone got any cheap options for racks larger than 12U, say 18U or 24U? Mine 12U is nearly full & 24U half height racks are expensive as..

    • Probably better to keep an eye out on second hand racks. Anything larger than 12RU starts getting big and bulky with only dedicated suppliers like 4Cabling etc stocking them.
