The price isn't too adaptable, jv… So I think it's the same price…

No, these are not recommended for dashcams/video recording. Look into their Endurance range cards.

I think these will be fine considering their price tag. I have an unbranded one, working for 6 years in a dashcam, parking under the sun for 6/7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Still going No issue. Just buy 2 if you need backup.

    • +7

It s a gamble, you might not realise it failed until you need the recording. The risk is lower with endurance cards, but they can still fail anytime for any reason.

      • And give errors when they do. Not continue to operate as though everything is normal until such time as you remove it to access a recording…

        • +1

You won't necessarily get an error,
I had a KPT-850 run "happily" with a 32GB SanDisk Extreme. When I went to check footage on my PC, the video was there, but it was corrupted. VLC did it's best to play the file, but it was full of artefacts and garbled. So yeah 95% of modern dashcams will likely warn you, but why risk it?

      • are you able to specify any actual physical difference between "endurance" cards and regular ones? Or you're just solely basing your comment on product marketing?

        • +1

There’s lots of good information online showing that sandisk max endurance cards use lower density NAND, specifically MLC instead of standard TLC, and have a more robust controller and firmware prioritising longevity over speed.

Ripitapart - reverse engineering and analysis of sandisk endurance card

          • @Ahoon: Not sure if this proves anything tbh. If you have to do some reverse engineering because the manufacturer doesn't even provide any details about it, it probably proves how irrelevant it is.

Further, what you linked to is only concerned with one specific product from one manufacturer, a far fetch to prove anything about "endurance" cards as a whole.

It still looks to me as product marketing more than anything.

            • @ozbargain-pashim: Your claim is a serious allegation. If that were true, it would likely amount to misleading advertising and deceptive conduct, which is legally actionable in many countries.

If you genuinely believe this, why not invest some time and money to prove it properly? With solid evidence, you could get paid well through a case or even a class action.

Or, if you’d rather test it your own way, why not milk the warranty instead?

              1. Pick a High Endurance card, check the warranty hours/TBW limit.
              2. Use the card normally until it’s close to the end of its warranty period. While using it:
              • Record at low quality (lower resolution, lower bitrate) to keep total TBW low.
              • Use very short recording intervals (1min) to generate more small writes and metadata overhead.
              • Enable motion detection or G-sensor event recording to add lots of short, random clips.
              • Keep the card nearly full so it loops and overwrites constantly, forcing extra block erases.
              • Use a smaller capacity card so it wears out the same NAND cells faster.
              3. When near the end of warranty, set up a PC with a card reader.
              4. Use a stress test tool to write large continuous files in a loop with some random small block writes mixed in, make sure it still resembles real dash cam usage.
              5. Keep it hot but inside the rated operating temp (below 85C).
              6. Track your total bytes written and stay under the warranty TBW limit.
              7. Run it until the card fails.
              8. File a warranty claim and they should replace the card if it fails within warranty specs.
              9. Repeat the entire process before the new replacement card warranty expires…
              • @Ahoon: While you're at it, ask chatgpt to assess how stupid your argument is…

                • @ozbargain-pashim: Lol go ahead and ask if you d like to, there is nothing wrong with it. Sandisk provides a 2 year warranty with higher TBW limits on the endurance series, so based on your claim, these cards should fail and let someone legitimately keep claiming a new one under warranty perpetually.

                  • -1

                    @Ahoon:

based on your claim, these cards should fail

lol that's not what I said. Not sure if there's any point continuing with this. You can go back to my previous comments if you like. Or you can keep believing product marketing terminology…

                    "endurance" lol

                    • @ozbargain-pashim: There is no magical SD card technology that is fail proof, all flash memory is consumable at the moment. What do you expect from an sdcard? You claimed that endurance cards are no different from regular ones. You are the one who needs to prove it, and I gave you a method that would let you get lifetime free SD cards from Sandisk if your claim is correct.

these things will get so cheap now with the popularity of express cards rising. Thanks switch 2.

They are offering 2tb ones for $15. Haha yeah nah

    • +13

128 negative reviews in the last year, they post from NSW but location is China in eBay. Avoid like the plague..

    • +5

Maaate, that listing is nothing but red flags, donate the money to a charity instead of throwing it away to a scam listing like that!

    • +5

Never buy SD cards from anyone that advertises them on eBay. Amazon (if making sure sold by Amazon) or a bricks & mortar store. Anything else you're just throwing your money away.

If anyone thinks someone's selling 2TB cards for $15 then I've some magic beans to sell them

  • Since it's shipped and sold by Amazon AU, Officeworks will price beat if you ask.

    • +2

I think they will add shipping before price match as need prime for free shipping. You can get them for Bunnings for a few dollar more with free delivery. Officeworks will not pricematch bunnings as marketplace.

      • +1

You're spot on, of course, last time I bought I bought 6 cards which would qualify for free shipping, so I was able to get the price match. I forgot about the $59 spend threshold for free shipping.

  • interesting, I always think DJI drone and Go pro camera require Extreme Pro not Endurance because of the read/write speed

    Could anybody elaborate?

    • Endurance is for dashcams/security cams where the card gets written over and over non stop, they're made to endure high write cycles

This is for performance ie. 4k 60fps or higher

  • Are these ok for camera storage?

    • +1

Digital camera for photos/videos - yes, ideal.

Dashcams, CCTV, anything that is always, or frquently, recording - They will work well, but may fail earlier than expected. A high endurance or max endurance card is recommended for these applications.

      • How about go pro or dji drone with 4k recording?

        • I'm not expert by any means, but given a drone is not recording 24/7, an extreme or extreme pro should be fine.

If you're doing commercial drone work (being paid), then fork out for max endurance for the reliability.

It all depends on how critical a failure is going to be for you. If you are trying to capture something where you only have one chance to get it right, then buy max endurance. No point saving $20-$50 on a card if the footage is more valuable to you than that cost.

  • Is the 512GB Extreme option a good deal? looking for something to put in a handheld

    • +1

Price history for Extreme Pro is here $70 is a good price, all time low (ATL) closer to $60, make of that what you will.

The 512gb Extreme is not particularly cheap, depends how long you can wait to buy.

  • Just to add, even though endurance are recommended for dash cams, I have have 5 dash cams in our and family cars since
2015. Never has a card fail. This is average use , approx 15k a year. Usually get big size cards 128 to 256 so the read write cycles are less.
If Uber and in the car 8 hours every day, I am sure non endurance would fail.

    • What card are you talking about? The Extreme Pro or a different card?

      • We have used Sandisk Extreme and Samsung EVO cards in our dashcams. Not even the pro version. Never had once fail and review the footage now and then.

        • Thank you for clarifying.

  • I am thinking of buying a Dji Osmo Pocket 3 , would you recommend to get this Deal ?

    • Yes. 256gb is ample - you likely won't need to free up space for months (depending on usage) and the faster speed will be beneficial for the 120fps on the OP3.

      • You'll get about 4 hours @ 4k 120fps with a 256gb card

        • People aren't shooting movies with OP3's.

          • @Dealr: It shoots in 10bit D-log and is perfectly capable of shooting cinematic shots but ok…

I was merely stating how much you can fit at Max res. People use this a handicam for travel, easy enough to fill up 4-5 hours in a month. Specially if you have kids

    • yes, this card is the first one DJI recommends. I have 3x for my Osmo Pocket 3 as well, never skip a beat.

  • Is this ok for Eufy cams?

  • -1

it looks like $39 is new normal price…

    • it will go back up

  • Personally I've had SanDisk fail on me but never samsung. Curious to hear other people's experiences.

    • I've had red SanDisks fail on me, not sure if they were fakes though this was about 5 years ago.

Never had Samsung fail, but I've only used them on phones back then.

Now I'm only using extreme pros for my cameras and they're holding up good. Have a 1tb on my x360 and I'd leave it recording for 4+ hours non stop with no issues

    • I've had SanDisk Ultra's fail on me in GoPro's, but not in Raspberry Pi's.
That said, I shifted to SanDisk Extreme/Extreme Pro's for GoPro/DJI Osmo Action cameras (after the ultras failed) and never had an issue. I also use Samsung cards in both the action cam's (more recently) and raspberry pi's (with reasonably large/consistent read/writes) and never had an issue.
I think QA on both have improved in recent years.
