i feel like pensioners would prefer a top loader machine less the front loader is elevated….

    • Agree but the energy and water saving trendies wouldn't like that reality.

I thought the same thing. My 75 yo mum needed a new washing machine and she was adamant that she'd find a top loader more accessible, so that's what she got.

I presume front loaders must be more energy/water efficient, but if they're hard to use for a particular group then they're not a good fit for that group.

Makes you wonder if the policy makers thought about the needs of the people they're supposedly trying to help.

A rebate on an energy-efficient fridge would seem far more useful.

      • They’ve done the energy efficient Fridges and TV’s previously. Didn’t get full takeup.

Front loading WM’s would only be about water savings unfortunately, not about usability.

    • Also how much space do you have between front of your washing machine and the wall?
Our laundry space certainly would not support a front loader

that sounds impossible, you just need enough room to swing the door open. is your washer in the closet?

      • How the hell do you move in there? A regular human needs more space to move than a front loader door.

top loader is easy throwing clothes in, but they are going to have to dive in to pull it out.
      pull out game strong.

    • No harder for me as an old age pensioner

Seems like a good idea until…
    1. You realise a lot of pensioners aren’t on ozb
    2. Most pensioners would only replace something that is already broken (not preemptively)
    3. Life is hard enough as a pensioner and you’re now creating an administrative burden on them (eligibility check, application form, order, payment within x days etc etc)
    4. They have to replace their existing top loader..
    (Assumes they have one..)

Very specific criteria… let’s see how this is abused

pensioners/low income earners swapping their old top loader for a brand new front loader then sells it on FBM makes profit, rebuys a cheap top loader.

    • Did any of you read past the 'Pensioners Concession Card' bit?

  • +2

Interesting that the program has a specific model and retailer in place, rather than the usual rebate approach.

  • -3

With Aldy offering cheap front loader machines from time to time, the savings aren't as much as one would think.

    • +1

The retail price for this washer is $749.

I've had that one for several years and it's a good appliance. Not sure if you can say the same about a washer bought from Aldi.

Why goverment replacing top loader to front loader? Is front loader use less electricity and water? But I thought they are more prone to mold?

  • A useless scheme as people rightly mentioned most elderly people would prefer the usability of a top loader over back breaking water efficiency. At least the NSW government can say they virtue signalled.

I know most of you live in a basement, but this isn't aimed at "old age pensioners", There are numerous pensions out there……….. Old Age pensioners are eligible, but the program is aimed at low income households with children - you know, the people that wash clothes the most………..

The comments above just sound like a Sky "news" broadcast

Thanks for perfectly articulating my thoughts.
