Got excited. Then realised it's Laser branded, not a laser projector :(

edit: Wait. Is it laser projection or they lying?

    Projection Technology: Laser

      Not according to Laser's website

Shows LED as light source type. Don't think there are any cheap generic lasers around.

I recently got a secondhand Epson EB-1480fi UST projector with only 1400hours on it for $280. They are out there sometimes if you are looking.

      • Where did you get the Epson from?

      • Isn't the magic cube laser? Apparently not but the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser and Formovie S5 are.

$245 at Amazon too, not a bad setup for the kids or some sport while camping if you have an inverter handy.

  • Dumb question, what's the difference between this 1080p projector vs the cheap $50-100 you can get sometimes on amazon?

    • +1

The fact it includes the inflatable screen I'd say.

    • +3

You can easily return the one you got from Amazon if it's crap.

Most cheaper ones are 720p panels (at most) that accept 1080p input files; same for ones advertising 4k.

But if you can find native resolution is the same, then nothing.
Having seen this one in person I'd say it's a LOT brighter though.

    • Brightness. I have one of the cheap ones, and it's basically just a phone screen with an LED behind it
(which is great for me, because I wanted to project tv shows onto the ceiling so i could watch them lying down, but not be so bright enough to keep me awake)

    200 ANSI lumens

    • Is that good or bad?

      • +3

        it's bad

would be ok on a small screen in a very dark room

        • Or camped in middle of nowhere

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: 200 ANSI lumens is so dim that the stars might literally outshine it.

You'd need to only camp when cloudy or check the phases of the moon to make sure it's a no moon night too.

      • its not bad.. its terrible.. you want about 2000 or more! unless your watching in a pitch black room.

  • Is there a standard way to mount this to the ceiling/support beam?

    • This is more a toy, not the sort of projector you want permanently installed.

      • +1

        I'd mount it.
I saw it in store; it'd work great in your mates bar, or in the bedroom as a ceiling display.
Brighter than you think; It only takes like 75 Ansi Lumens in a 'dusk' lit room for a projector to be visible after that it's all about how many details, and what level of contrast, are visible.

But yeah, keep it below 100"….

  • Picked one up. Seems like a decent deal with screen and soundbar. Handy for summer outdoor movies. Plus using topcashback gives you another $9 odd back in cashback assuming it tracks ok. $225 odd seems like a fair deal.

  • +1

200 lumens even in pitch black is not much for a 144" screen.

You'd be better off getting a used office projector, e.g.

    • Those aren't even 1080 though, they are old school monitor resolution

      • +1

They often have 1080p projectors come up. Have had some large venue 5000lumen laser sony projectors go up for $450ish a few times recently. They nearly go as quickly as they are listed though, so you need to check in often.

  • +3

Yeah 2000 lumens is more where you want to be, haven't looked at projectors in a while but my benq w1070 was brilliant for the price ($1000) back in the day in 2012.

    • W1070 was legendary back then

    • Yeah we needed a bunch for classrooms a few years ago, and I wouldn't consider anything under 2000 lumen either for varying brightness rooms. Fine if you've got blackout curtains or only use at night time though.

    • Still rocking a W1070. Must be on my 6th bulb.

Everyone who sees it is shocked when I tell them, no, it's not 4K, only 1080p.

I keep wanting to upgrade to 4k but there's nothing cheap that's not a downgrade in color/contrast compared to the W1070 😂

      • +1

I replaced mine with a refurb TK700 which was $430 on BenQ's refurb page, haven't seen anything close to that price since though!

  • How about this one for $179 from jaycar?! https://www.jaycar.com.au/digitech-1080p-projector-with-hdmi…

Seems slightly brighter at 7000 lumina (250-280 Ansi lm), also 1080p, 2 x HDMI inputs, also LED light source.

Just popped up in a newsletter email today. Bit cheaper. No outdoor screen obviously.

    • +2

Thats pretty cool. Specs check out.
      "Power consumption 95W" Yup, it'll be a 70W COB-LED, or an under-driven 100W COB.

I have a cheap $50 ebay one mounted to the foot of my bed, projecting on the roof.
it's a great way to fall to sleep, and the low ANSI rating on them doesn't keep me awake.

  • Any recommendations on a projector for the ~$500 price mark?

  • Some of the cheap projectors can be good, YouTube Jayce Ooi does brilliant review and head to heads companions of all the latest budget China projectors. I initially got a Wanbo T2 (200 lumens) for just over a hundred bucks from ali and was pretty impressed but it suffered screen burn after a couple of years of daily use. I then upgraded the room projector to a Wanbo devinci (approx 600 lumens) for about $300 at it's been going good, also got a Wanbo x5 (1100 lumens) for the deck also about 300 and it's been epic as well, do some research!

  • HODL this will be back on black friday for $199 . https://www.tiktok.com/@bunnings/video/7442129724337360146
