I am now imagining four overweight Australians in this underpowered thing…. That put a smile in my face….

  • Damn so cheap!!! They're probably not making money. This is a much better buy than a POS Kia Picanto with its ancient manual handbrake

    • What's wrong with a manual handbrake?

      • You'd want a manual handbrake when you are teaching someone to drive

      • -1

Theres also nothing wrong with a typewriter

    • Also great for handbrake turns….

  • Solid brand and quality product, using it for last 2 years..!

      wow way to be racist

    • +1

Seems like you can't even afford this hence the racism 😂

    Good for uber eats

  • The XUV 700 alpha model from Mahindra is a great car for the money with lotsa tech, sunroof etc. with decent safety ratings as well. Not sure on this one

ChatGPT does not hold back when reviewing the image of this car.

“This car looks like it was designed entirely in Microsoft Excel — all angles, no soul. It’s like a fridge mated with a LEGO block and raised the kid in a wind tunnel. You don’t drive this thing, you apologize for it!”

    • +1

Oh the irony of ChatGPT roasting something for not having a soul

  • What's with all the cheap Asian cars flooding the market recently?

Surely they aren't up to standard.

    • China has encouraged their auto industry. Australia hasn't and infact shut them down. :)

Some notable safety considerations..they aren't submitting for ANCAP currently at all and will work on a 2026 rating. If you place any value on ANCAP The tiggo 4 pro has 5 stars for 500 more and demo can be had for less

    Daniel Snare
Mahindra says it has made major structural improvements but admits the car isn’t currently tuned to meet ANCAP’s stricter rules coming in 2026.
A revised model will be submitted for future testing which could result in a higher price.

  • For someone with an old Camry that hasn't had any major problems, but pink slip guys have suggested disc brakes will need changing soon.

Just checking the 3XO is 6.7L/100km with 42L fuel tank.

2005 Camry Altise was 9.8L/100km with 70L fuel tank.

Which means you'd have to fill up the 3XO more often?

    • Fuel consumption 9.8L/100km (combined)
      Maximum torque 218Nm
      Maximum power 112kW

didn't know it was that bad

  • why would you do this to yourself, don't go there

No, enjoy the Japanese built car that’s loved locally by many

      • +1

Manufactured with all Chinese components and assembled in Japan

      • Built in Thailand surely. VIN begins MM not JM?

    • Nah man CX3 is better is almost every way. You will find out when you eventually sell it also.

  • +10

I love some of the comments here, especially the appreciation for Holden — a company that ultimately went under due to corporate greed and building cars that became irrelevant, appealing mostly to petrolheads. Yet now, the same people criticise Chinese and Indian manufacturers who are actually innovating at a fraction of the cost. Before you make comments about the engine Japanese have Kei cars with 660 cc engine and they are perfectly fine for a city ride

    For the Australian Market:

The 2025 Mahindra 3XO AX5L, available in Australia, is reported to have a combined fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres. This model is equipped with a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

    Underpowered?

    • +2

Plenty of cars offer turbo three cylinder motors these days, including the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo and T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq…

  • +1

I really don’t get the depreciation chat on cars like these… at the end of the day you might sell it for $10,000 less than you buy it (sure, 40%) after five years but an equivalent year German car (more expensive yes) after five years will have lost $40,000 (say 30%).

But don’t look at the percentages look at the totals - losing $10k for 5 years of motoring and leaving some warranty on the table?

I won’t buy one, but good deal for some.

    • Even if you drove it into the ground over 10 years and never sold it, it's what- $2300 a year + running costs? Not bad (assuming it can go that distance).

      • +2

This brand is pretty big in India and South Africa (probably in other places but only those two I know of). And their cars run several hundreds of thousands of kms in far harsher conditions like punishing terrain, lower quality fuel and the likes.

I don't know about this particular car though, just talking about the brand.

  • Rule of thumb used to be Chinese bought German cars because it was a status thing…Merc. Bmw and Audi…..Working class bought Toyotas….. This was how it was….. But now manufacturers have put all the touch screens and gadgets in cars and the lines have blurred……

    • Maybe the screens need higher resolution?

    From their own site:

"Leap ahead with the exciting and peppy engine, offering a potent 82 Kw @ 5000 rpm stream of power"

    Quality Engrish there.

Wouldn't touch this shitebox with a 10ft pole.
They probably cost $5k to make

    • +1

Wouldn't touch this shitebox with a 10ft pole.

      What about an 11ft one?

  • I be better buying a HRV for that price by adding little bit more.

    • Not even the same price range. HRV is 33K. I dont think the Honda is worth almost 10K more.

      • Have one, and it's worth the asking price (noting it's drive away pricing, and fixed $199 x 5 servicing).

        • -1

I test drove the base petrol model when it launched. Was way too weak (was actually slower than my Jazz). At 33K, I still think its overpriced. That car should've been 29K driveaway when it launched.

  • Hmm is there a reason why they don't want to submit to an ANCAP testing in Aus?

Should be mandatory to a show flag next to everyone’s username reflecting their nationality when they comment. I can’t believe the number of positive comments. The only good thing about this deal is the added competition.

How can I filter through real comments or recommendations from people that know or used the car or have something useful

Gave up after reading two pages of comments about indian and Asian people or uber drivers

  • Strange naming choice and it’s weird to tell people you’re driving a 3XO AX5L and the warranty is underwhelming with 150k being the limit (yes it will take 10 years for the average person) which doesn’t scream high reliability.

Resale is pointless consideration on a $24k car and with all the major brands leaving the affordable car segment, we need to encourage affordable new cars.

Competition benefits the consumer, otherwise we’d all be stuck paying inflated prices from the Japanese, Korean and European manufacturers.

  • 24k SUV lands but there’s a catch

Article is about ANCAP safety rating. Mahindra isn’t submitting it for ANCAP testing, as it’s not mandatory in Australia.

    • Can not believe that ANCAP testing is not mandatory in Australia.

  • That's really cheap. Why buy a toyota when you can buy 2 of this!

As a child I had pictures of Mahindra cars on my wall… along side Tada, GMW, Haval's… such dreams and aspirations 🤩
…but in reality, anything was better than my 🫏. And now, living in this 'lucky country' I not only drive, but own my childhood aspiration.

So the next time you see me driving erratically, rocking my Hindustani music & my bangles dangling 🤙 just remember, I grew up driving a donkey 😉

    Pros:
Offers competitive pricing, making it an attractive option for many Australian buyers.

    Cons:
Likely requires premium unleaded fuel (95 RON or higher), which may lead to increased day-to-day running costs.

    Neutral:
-ANCAP safety ratings may represent a recurring expense for manufacturers. In the future, more automakers might opt out, potentially passing these costs on to consumers, including Australians
-Comments referencing Uber, Indian, and Chinese drivers/manufacturers highlight a strong work ethic compared to a cultural perception of leisure among some locals. While this may spark debate, it's a reflection of differing attitudes toward work and opportunity.

Remember, we do not have any local manufacturers left. The one whom we says proudly represent Aussie ( Kantas , Virjin ,Optas, Medeebnk) we know how solid they are in securing data or Hardly Norman in jobkeeper payments.

  • Finally a Mahindra that got pretty good reviews across the board. Not perfect but definitely a worthy contender.

This quote from the carexpert review should sum up the decision to be made. Overall I feel this is welcome competition to the Chinese brands and will benefit consumers in the long run. Let the price wars begin.

    Block-quote
It’s clear Mahindra could have cut more corners on equipment levels, but instead it made smart spec decisions to avoid creating a superficial price-leader, and ended up with a genuinely strong value proposition.
There are drawbacks including its unknown safety credentials, and the fact the 3XO will score equipment updates in 2026 to ensure it achieves a five-star ANCAP rating, potentially making 2025 vehicles less desirable in future.

    • CarExpert reviews aren't worth shit. Look at their website now. Literally post after post about MG / Haval / Jaecoo. They're nothing but cash for comments now.
Unfortunately, pretty much all car review sites are now.

      • Buddy. Its not just them but almost all of them. And its not 100% positive either. Am not sure about paid reviews. In any case looks like Mahindra has put out a car worth considering. Lets see if the Australian public agrees.

  • Was wondering when the ozbargain takeover would reach tipping point.

  • Looks pretty bad. Nah..
