Midea E88 90cm Canopy Rangehood $899 + Delivery ($0 C&C Footscray/Springvale VIC) @ Countdown Deals

310

Needed to replace my rangehood and was researching all the big Chinese brands such as Fotile, Robam, Vatti and Midea. Stumbled upon this rangehood for what appears to be a higher end model at a discounted price. Learned that Midea is a huge manufacturer in China for their own products and other big name brands.

Features of this model you'd typically find on >$1500 rangehoods:
- Automatic fan speed sensor control (with low 120W brushless DC motor)
- Steam clean (not sure how effective but doesn't hurt to have this feature)
- Gesture hand wave on/off
- 1800m3/h air flow (I don't think this measured according to IEC standard so hard to compare against other manufacturers/models which do)
- 3 year warranty (I called Midea and they confirmed they do provide warranty even though they mainly in the A/C market)

Apparently Midea is changing to a distributor supply chain model and clearing their existing stock. Not sure if this is true.

The Google reviews are a bit low for Countdown so would recommend contacting them or the Newtone Betta Footscray/Springvale if collecting to confirm stock before buying. Alternatively can buy from MyDeal for $1059 + Delivery

    midea makes Electrolux too
    how do i know?
my dishwaher pump has leaked and every part is marked Midea, its cheaper to buy from Midea instead of Electrolux

ive got one installed 6 months ago

can confirm its just as good as 1500 stuff

    • +1

The $1500+ stuff are cool but I couldn't justify spending that much for essentially a metal box and a fan haha. Good to hear it's working well after 6 months

    • +4

      Is it quiet when running?

  • +1

Personally, if I'm going to replace my rangehood, I will look no further than Fotile. I have heard nothing but really positive feedback from people I know who has it.

I did contact Fotile and they are selling the EMS9028 for $999 as EOFY special. $400 install on a single story home. It's a basic model and was going to buy that until I saw the Midea.

Warranty on Fotile is 2 years (labour + parts) and 10 year motor (parts only).

I'm replacing a budget rangehood that has lasted more than 10 years so I figured even cheap motors can last 10 years so happy to take the gamble with the Midea 3 year warranty.

I've take the front covers off the Midea to see inside and the impeller isn't hard to get to and easy to remove and clean.

    • +1

Yeah but nothing close to $900 though

As a home that cooks pretty much every night and it is common that Asian style cooking do create a bit of smoke… rangehood falls into the same category as a bed mattress that it would be one of those things that I'll want to buy a nice one since it's something we'll use every single day.

Like I said, it's just a personal preference. I'm happy you found a good deal that suits you.

      • Agree thanks :) luckily I have the wok burner outside for the serious stuff

i thought the best was QASAIR

      • +1

First time researching rangehoods and found Scheweigan, Whispair, Sirius as well. My eyes were shocked on how much you can spend so much on a rangehood! The outside motors ones were cool but I'm a tightarse and couldn't justify spending >$2k haha

The store has only 2.4 stars from 155 reviews, not great.

    • I agree I was a bit concerned so I just called and purchased in store to make sure I was getting what I paid. For anyone concerned or if they run out of stock I included the MyDeals website but unfortunately not same price however apparently the seller is directly Midea.

I went and visited their store in person, its a beta electrical, and they were awesome, would certainly recommend. Very friendly, no issues with the item, was there ready to go.

      this is what i got:
      MIDEA MHC90GSS 90CM Canopy Glass Rangehood × 1 $259.00

      Subtotal $259.00

      Pickup $0.00
      Taxes $0.00
      Total $259.00 AUD

its awesome… if not a bit loud.

      * note that the specs on the website are incorrect for this one though.

looks like the one in OP has much more features though. - and probably heaps quieter based on the comments here.

I should probably rate there a store with my experience.

looks like they have quite a few reasonably priced there.

damn I just bought a schweigen for $3300

    • +1

Same. Sick of mucking around with so called quiet and Rangehoods suitable for Asian cooking. For what I have spent over the years on other brands I could have purchased a Schweigen years ago.

      • My in-law turned my old rangehood to the lowest level as she hates noise. my current one is a very cheap one with 500 m3/h air flow. so I need a quiet one otherwise she won't use the high level. and the whole house is very smokey

  • +2

$250 delivery fee kills the deal

    • +1

You must be outside of Melbourne? The MyDeals might be cheaper overall including shipping for you but still probably be $200 more than the deal.

  • For around this price I would get a sirius rangehood. The filters are super easy to clean, just pop them in the dishwasher every week.

    • +1

sirius airflow weaker then this at same price point

  • Does anyone know any good installers in Brisbane??

    • We used Accent Ducting, https://brisbaneducting.com.au/contact-us
He's also a authorized QASAIR installer.
We had a complicated installation and he was a godsend.

      • Thank you! I’ll check them out. Do you know if they do cabinetry work?

        • We had the OH cabinets already made and fitted.
From memory he did the cutout for the rangehood opening though.
Not sure to what extent he does with cabinetry.

  • For those with Asian branded rangehoods like these, how do you find the filter?

Usually they are just this flat piece of metal that sits directly in front of the fan.

Does it capture all grease or does grease still accumulate over time on the motor?

    • I was really curous about this also that's why I paid attention to being able to access the motor impeller fan easily to remove and clean. This model is easy to access. From what I've seen from some Fotile models which has similar design, the oil mainly collects on the flat metal and is angled into the drip tray. Given good feedback from Fotile users I assume this design works. Fotile rangehoods don't have steam clean I think only Midea and Vatti does. Doing a steam clean regularly I think would prevent build up of oil/grease on the impeller.

  • I am also in the market for a better rangehood. Currently have the 90cm slide out rangehood (apartment style) that is built/hidden inside a cabinet unit with proper exhaust tubing. This cabinet unit is independent of the rest of the kitchen cabinets.

Does anyone have any experience transitioning from such a rangehood to canopy ones? Would this cabinet need to be removed or could the cabinet be retained to hide the upper portion of the range hood assuming all the dimensions fit?

    • +1

Since this is not a pyramid style rangehood I think it is possible to fit it in a cabinet with modifications to the cabinetry. Check out the Fotile Australia instagram page they show some installs in cabinets. I imagine it wouldn't be dissimilar. A lot of it just depends on dimensions.

      • Thanks! Yeah I found some pictures on Fotile's website and thought it might be doable. Will pay a visit at the store to see if their installers would do such a build.

  • Can this be installed inside cabinet? Or does it need to be opened?

What I mean is can it be installed like the Robam pictures here?
    https://www.robammall.com.au/product/cxw-200-a8320/

    • +1

it is a flat one should able to be installed under cabinet

    • Standard wall cabinets are usually 30cm in depth.

The one you linked requires 27cm clarence (the chimney part), so it should be fine.

However, you may still need to modify the cabinet to allow 65cm - 75cm clarence between rangehood and cooktop, depending on the type and how your old rangehood is installed. May need to cut short the cabinet door, plain doors are relatively easy, routed doors may become unsightly.

Midea in whitegoods are very big in the OEM market. They do the entry level models for quite a few brands like Electrolux, Whirlpool Smeg etc in the dishwasher, microwaves and refrigeration. They own also a swag of companies Little Swan, COLMO, Toshiba, Bugu, WAHIN and Comfee. They are among the top 3 manufacturers of microwaves in the world alongside with LG and Galanz. Being OEM they are not so synonymous. Also very big in air conditioning.

  • Will almost the same to get it installed.

  • +2

First day of using it and have to say I'm very happy with it! I cooked a steak to make a lot of smoke and it did really well. My favourite feature is the AI sensor which changes the fans speed automatically. It is very responsive changing between 1-8 speeds which is much better than the typical only 3 speed you get. It makes cooking much more enjoyable because you're not thinking about your rangehood being too low or too fast/noisy when you don't need it to be. Even at max speed which is 9 (turbo) it's not that bad. With all its features it feels like a 2k rangehood so very happy with the price I got.

    • The auto fan seems like a great feature for the older family member

      • +1

That's true and probably any household. I'm sure we all relate to someone leaving the rangehood on at medium/high speed for no need. I was boiling a pot of water making a lot of steam and as soon as I went to drain the pot over the sink it quickly changed to low fan which was awesome. I don't think I can go back to rangehoods without this feature haha
