decent price drop on the recently released new Garmin Instinct E (it's the entry version of the Instinct 3). only $57 more than the current $301.25 price for Instinct 2 (Standard, 45mm).
normal price is $549.

but important to know the up/downsides: both don't have Garmin (NFC) pay or Solar. Instinct E claims to have a much clearer MIP display (something to do with layers and glass and darkening borders), Instinct E only claims half the battery life of Instinct 2 (E 45mm: 16 days / 2 Standard 45mm: 28 days) so Instinct 2 has double the claimed battery life of new Instinct E.

also yes I saw a Instinct E review mentioning severe battery drain on early update (meant to show 16 days left, but watch shows 10~12 days left and drains quickly). recently uploaded youtube video said to download Garmin Express on PC, update using the USB cable, unplug then press update on watch. this forces the latest update and fixes the battery drain.

for anyone else wanting more info.

I went with Instinct 2 Standard for my older family member. double the battery life was more important than slightly more visible display and whatever newer sports modes the E offered. also was previously extra 10% off if you bought a tiny tub of vaseline lip balm for extra $12. so paid about $270 for the watch and $10 for the vaseline.

E is downgrade from the 2. Brilliant to get the 2

      • yeah I think Garmin deliberately nerfed the Instinct E, to sell more of the more expensive Instinct 3 Solar and Instinct 3 AMOLED models.
which is another reason I got the Instinct 2 Standard, because I think future models will follow the same trend. last chance to get 28 days battery.

can't really say anything more negative though because seems like whenever tech companies get successful they all do this sort of thing. paywall for specs.

      • my bad forgot to add to original comment. Instinct 2 Standard's double battery life and $80 saving made it an easy choice.

        • I almost took the instinct 2, before I placed the order on Amazon, another offer popped up, I got forerunner 255 music down to $308 and only one left in stock. Very happy with the MIP screen and 15 days battery life. I used to have a forerunner 165, pretty good watch, but I don’t like AMOLED.

@sydracing: yeah actually I also saw Garmin 165 Music around that price $300, from Amazon US. cheapest in AU so far was $349 during recent rebelsport sale.
but 11 days battery and a screen that would turn on and off was not ideal for family member. they wanted it to show the time always, that was one of the main requirements. so yeah that price didn't last long anyway went back up to $400 while I was still thinking about it.

btw if you use the sleep mode schedule during sleep hours I think you can squeeze more battery out. set it up on the Instinct 2, shows getting up to 65 days now, so perfect for elderly person only need to remember to charge once a month at most.

watch still shows the time/date in sleep mode, but disconnects from phone, no notifications among other things. not sure about sleep tracking I haven't turned that on for them so not sure how sleep mode schedule affects sleep tracking. I think you can still set it to check your heart rate (but Pulse OX is a big battery drainer btw) periodically while in sleep mode.

sleep mode on 255 might disable gesture to wake, so at night you might need to press the light button to show the time. <—- my bad I thought 255 was AMOLED. it's the 265 that has AMOLED.
