  • how does this compare to Castrol edge a3/b4?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914110

    • The devil is in the details. Start researching and/or splitting hairs lol.

    • Very different products despite a shared viscosity. Castrol EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 has a range of European manufacturer approvals in addition to its industry specs and can be used in both petrol and diesel vehicles (unless fitted with diesel particulate filters). The Penrite product is a petrol only product without approvals but will be fine to use in many Japanese/Korean/Australian petrol cars requiring a 5W-30 API spec'd product. Really boils down to the car you're looking to use it in and the handbook requirements…the Repco website should narrow the product list if you put in your vehicle details :)

The repco site says this isn't suitable for my car, but im pretty sure this is what my mechanic used in my last service 😬

I had the same issue with the websites but the mechanic recommended using it.

What did the Penrite website say?

          • @Kelpei: Good idea. The penrite site says it's suitable. I guess that's the way to go?

            • +1

@Duck Mode: Yep. My Honda owners manual says 0W-20 (for fuel economy). It's not that cold in Perth so I often use 5W-30. Before I did my own servicing my mechanic used 10W-40.

Sometimes I find SCA, Repco and Autobarn websites give different fitment for identical products… Go figure!

@Kelpei: Thanks! I was wondering about those points as well.

@Kelpei: The reality is that for a workshop, it's typically cheaper to use a higher viscosity product. Not all workshops operate this way, but most will have one or two bulk tanks and ideally will want to service as many vehicles as they can with a product they have in bulk for cost optimisation which is totally understandable. If that means using a viscosity that's not optimal for a vehicle but won't break the car then some will do just that. They'll then find a way to explain the choice if challenged (ambient temp, age of car, etc, etc). I even know of one fairly major OEM who applied the same approach with their genuine oil program against their own handbook recommendations which is a little amusing (though that has changed in recent years)…

    • I picked up 2 bottles this arvo but haven't used them yet. Not due for another 5000km. I've traditionally used Nulon LL as it's regularly on sale for around $30 and performs well. Castrol… haven't touched in years so can't really comment.

I think we should be able to price beat with super cheap auto so that we can use their discounted gift card for additional 10% discount :-)

    • May I know where can I get the 10% off SCA GC? Thank you!

There are different options, If you have access to RewardsGateway or Bupa Life Rewards then you can. Otherwise, you can use the below offer from woolworths "https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914005"

  • FYI SCA Rejected my price match even though I did a search on "EPLUSGF5005" and it appeared in their website but with some variation in the packaging. Not sure if anyone else had better luck with this.

    • Sounds like they're doing what Bunnings have been doing for years i.e slightly varying the product name/packaging so that they can refuse to price match competitors. Have you tried at another SCA store?

I did online price matching that got rejected. Went to the store today and perhaps my luck got a trainee cashier so she was not eagle eyed enough to notice the slight change in packaging and gave me the price match but took her awhile to get the price match into the system.

        • Strange, never got rejected for difference in packaging. If it's the same part number I had 100% luck so far price matching…

    • I did online price match with this successfully. Depends who you get I think. Usually okay with SCA price matching like for like.
