Tyre Replacement Advice: Mixing Brands on AWD (Santa Fe 2016)

Hi all, got a flat tyre yesterday – side wall damage, so repair isn’t possible.

The set is Pirelli Scorpion, fitted as part of a MyCar Black Friday 2023 promo. I’ve currently got the spare on from previous set (Hankook tyre).

MyCar have given me a few options to replace the damaged tyre, but they are not the same Pirelli Scorpion model. Is it ok to mix brands/models like this on an AWD? Or should I be looking to replace both tyres on the same axle, so I have a matching front set and rear set and keep the other Pirelli as the spare.

The staff person tried to sell me the MyCar AVANDRA Tyre

Would appreciate any advice from others who’ve been in a similar situation.

Thanks!

Tyres

I currently have Pirelli Scorpion 235/55R19 M+S

MyCar - PIRELLI SCORPION MS XL 105V - $475
Tempe Tyres - PIRELLI 235/55R19 105V XL - $315
actyres - PIRELLI-235/55R19 MS 105V- $283
Tyroola - SCORPION SEAL INSIDE ELT - $309

Two of the same brand happy days.

    • ok, I'm just wondering why the guy kept saying I could just replace the single tyre with different brand/model. I questioned him a few times on it and he was confident on it.

      • can only do one if the same as other side

        • yes I would understand replacing a single tyre with the exact same but he was recommending a completely different tyre

          • @3dprintdeals: at the back it should be ok but I would go with the same tyre as on the other side if on budget or two new ones

            • @TrdiK89: I think I'll go with 2 matching, the MyCar prices are crazy high $475 but I've found the same one for $283.

the guy kept saying I could just replace the single tyre with different brand/model. I questioned him a few times on it and he was confident on it.

I worked in the tyre /brake/suspension industry for 8 years.

You can do what the tyre guy said but keep in mind that (a) the tyre guy gets paid "not a lot" so his mindset is "cheapest possible"; (b) most customers want to pay the bare minimum and the tyre dude sways that way.

It's an AWD, not a 4WD with a locking transfer case so there is more leeway in tyre diameter variation allowance.

If it was mine I'd fit another Pirelli Scorpion as close to the same tread pattern as the other 3 and combine it the Pirelli with the least tread wear on the same axle.

Don't buy that MyCar house brand tyre, it will forever be an eyesore.

Note the difference in price for the same tyre between Tempe Tyres and MyCar. That's what a ripoff MyCar is. Go to your local TempeTyres (the original is my local).

  • How worn are the tyres?if they are worn, replace 2.

    • not very worn, only been a year and a half. Maybe 10,000KM

      • Should get away with one then. If i were you, id put the two odd ones on the back.

        • yeah it was the rear left

Thanks all, I've found exact tyre cheaper than MyCar and will replace both rear tyres with matching set.

  • If $$ are tight Get a (quality) low mileage second hand matching brand /wear as yours. (from a dedicated tyre business) Budget for 4 new tyres going fwd. Put the second hand one on the rear.

side wall damage, so repair isn’t possible.

    This is not always true…

    • possible, the damage to my tyre isn't repairable though. More like a slash than a puncture.

    • In Pakistan just a piece of rubber bolted on and a tube fitted is perfectly fine.
      No issue on rear axle.

    1 tyre.

    Autogreen Sport Cruiser SC6.

Cheap, and a higher treadwear rating than anything you've listed here. Probably double. UTQG: 420.

    • why does most advice not recommend mixing & matching tyres?

      • -1

Sure, but its not against the law. And considering the law in Aus is generally very "nanny state", and the fact they are not, about this, must say something.

      • Different trye have different rubber compounds leading to different levels of friction which can posibly affect traction under hard acceleration / braking.

  • A few people has said out the two odd ones at the back, I’m keen to know why.?

Google AI said rear tyre performance is more important, so wouldn’t you want the better tyres at the back?

    • Did you AI google AWD?
It depends if it's FWD,RWD,AWD (and where the main traction is) or 4WD. Odd tyres on the front would affect how the car steers, aligns, brakes (esp ABS) and may affect the drive-line.The front does the most braking and all the steering. If I had to have a drama with a tyre, I'd pick the rear tyres.

      • Then there are the different types of AWD. Full time, part time. Then the part time can be quite active or virtually a waste of installing it for on the blacktop.

  • The tyre tread on the pair of tyres is paramount otherwise you will drift right or left and then you may have a major issue in the wet or when you break.

So either get the same type with the same tread pattern or get two new tyres.

    • Thanks, planning to get the same tyre. Just not from MyCar.

Tyres are about 10,000km in, I'll have to check how much wear is on the other tyre.

  • Hi op, I feel for you that tyre isn't cheap. Cheapest option is to find the same tyre secondhand with similar wear level, then only need one tyre and cheaper than new.
You could buy one new tyre (matching what you have), but then you'll have the issue that wear levels are different left-to-right on the same axle, I wouldn't do that myself.
You could buy two new tyres (matching what you have), put those on the front, rotate fronts to rear, and move your existing rear onto the spare, then your spare will match.

Hyundai SUVs require the same tyres on all wheels. It can cause issues with the AWD system

    • It’s one of the downsides of modern AWD.
