Help Me Find a New Kettle

Need a new kettle after an unfortunate incident where my glass kettle and the side of the sink attempted to occupy the same space at the same time… the sink won out. Read the other couple of kettle threads recently, but nothing quite fits.

Looking for something full metal (three previous glass kettles have had the same fate), temperature controlled, controls in the handle (a previous Breville bubbled over into its base and toasted the circuit board), and with a factory AU plug (T&T reasons).

Struggling to find one that fits all the criteria. Help me OZB, you are my only hope.

For future reference, electrons in the kettle and sink can't occupy the same space: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauli_exclusion_principle

That's why I got the one that uses protons.

      It had +ve reviews.

I should've prevented that joke because protons are fermions and it applies to them too

          Did you find it aPauling?

  • Surely there is a plethora of viable and applicable leads on previous kettle threads?

I got one of these to use on the electric BBQ at the local park. I used the $10 credit deal to purchase it.

On a gas hob , should be fine

      • i understood both of these references

        • Option 2 (are you sitting down?)

    • These aren’t good on flat griddle plates. The base is recessed crimped in place, so it has very poor heat transference from the surface.

Good thing I'm not paying for the electricity then.

  • I have an older Xiaomi/Viomi kettle that's still going strong (except for a spot that is a bit rusty). My brother had an identical one that's died - the handle controls died first.

Have you looked into the Philips 7000 series kettles and hot water dispensers?

Have you tried asking the AI? There's another thread where people are sharing stories about how they outsource thinking to AI now instead of Google/Facebook/TheNews.

  • I bought this thinking the leak review was faulty product. https://www.amazon.com.au/Russell-Hobbs-RHK26330-Illuminatio…

or you could spend more on the premium version which has the "choose boilign temperature buttons". https://www.amazon.com.au/Russell-Hobbs-Addison-Digital-RHK5…

Those buttons on the base aren’t water resistant. Ask me how I know…

      • oh dear.

tbf I don't know if the ones on the identical looking Breville model family member has are water resistant either.

they don't seem to have spilled any on the buttons, but have spilled a few times on the center where it connects. it was fine but years later now it's acting up, it occasionally randomly makes a beep when no button has been pressed, and I have even seen it boil water all by itself a few times. 😂

and plenty times at night I have wondered where a funny sound was coming from. the base constantly makes these quiet electrical noises. it still boils water when you tell it to though.

  • I recently bought the Philips 7000 kettle. Really happy with it. It's all metal except for a tiny knob at the bottom that measures water temp, lighter than my old Russell Hobbs, boils faster, and I love being able to see what temperature the water is on the handle. I've had no issues with it stopping at 40 degrees or leaking. The only con is the spout — takes longer to pour, but I worked around it by opening the lid when I pour water out.

  • The probability of spilling water on the base is less than spilling water on the handle when you fill up the kettle surely?

    • Indeed. Hence they waterproof the handle controls. Yet for some reason they don’t bother doing that for the base, then water pools on the PCB for sparky time.

  • I have a Bugatti Vera kettle. Fully metal other than the coating on the handle, and controls are in the handle. And unlike mine, the current model has a removable limescale filter. Mine would have to be around 10 years old now and it's still going strong.

  • When did boiling water get so complicated?

  • Have you considered an instant hot water dispenser? May not suit your needs, but I love the convenience!

    • -1

      expensive to run afaik.

      • Might depend on the type? I have a bench top one, so it heats on demand and only heats the exact amount dispensed.

        • -1

oh ok my bad. I thought you meant one of those medium sized white rectangles that's mounted on the wall, instant hot water 24/7.

  • Do what kettle did you get OP, and why?

    • Haven’t decided yet.

      • Then your back up plan has become plan A.

        • Well being on holidays has been of benefit, no immediate need r/n

  • Is a temperature controlled kettle one that cuts off once it boils?

I'm still trying to get my head around using a kettle to heat water to a lower tempersture, or rather why you would want to.

Otherwise, I bought a Russell Hobbs cordless kettle. Bought it because it was red and had matching toaster, sandwich toaster, s&p grinders and a few other things.

It is metal, cuts off when it boils…

    I like red.

    • Lower/variable temperature is good for tea and pour overs, and other varied food prep stuff like miso and sourdough
