Potentially an all time low on this very well-reviewed micro fourthirds body. I think this is the first deal on the body on OzBargain given the camera is only 18 months old.

I'm sure there will be plenty of comments about sensor size but for those of us who care more about overall size/weight and computational features, this is a killer deal.

    • Out of interest, what makes it not worth the money to you?

      • +12

        It'S nOt FuLl FrAmE1!1!1!

          • +6

@Zeee: You shouldn't, that was me mocking you

      • -6

        Read above

      • -2

m4/3 is a shit ratio. Sorry I just hate it. I'd take a $1000 APS-C set over these.

        • -3

Agreed. APS-C is the sweet spot for size, IQ, value and lens size/weight.

  • -3

What weigh/size advantage are we talking about here?

The xt30 ii or a6400 is ALOT smaller body with arguably better feature set (film sim or class leading af).

Lense dimensions for a mid tele equivalent:
    APSC SIGMA 18-50 f2.8 - 61. 6mm x 76. 5mm
    OM system M. Zuiko 14-40 f2.8 g - 69.9mm x 84mm

They all have their pancake lenses but this is pretty moot considering the big grip design of this vs rangefinder/vintage designs of others.

Lense and body of a modern apsc is still smaller than this. Olympus is just fluffing about m43's and their supposed benefits over ff or apsc.

If you like the image these cameras provide the more power to you. But don't go into buying these thinking you'll get a smaller camera overall.

    • +5

For many, the benefit comes at the big tele range e.g. https://explore.omsystem.com/au/en/m-zuiko-ed-150-400mm-f4-5…

      • -2

I'm sure there are many bird shooters here on ozb dropping 10k on lenses but sure, seems to be on the extreme side of things but valid point.

    • +10

From having a quick look….. neither of those have IBIS, and the XT30ii isn't weather sealed. The A6400 is a 6 year old camera too so will be missing some of the slicker computational features. You're also comparing the size of a M43 flagship vs more compact mid-range models.

      • +8

Exactly, this is the flagship, the type that pros take to extreme locations like the Artic or jungles. There are cheaper and more compact models like OM 5 and OM 10 for enthusiasts who don’t need as much features.
I also suggest krisspy look at the OM web site and a couple of independent reviews before making an ill informed comparison.

    • +3

For compact body, you can look at OM-5 mark I or mark II.

one of the Best IBIS in the market.
      1/8000 seconds mechanical shutter.
      weather sealed.
separated sd card slot - both XT30 and A6400 shared with battery slot.
lens selection, small cheap but good primes from Olympus and Panasonic. Way smaller and lighter zooms - standard and telephotos.
First computing tech in camera like hand hold high resolution, live nd etc.

If your style is more on long end, m43 is better choice. For wide end it is another story though, full frame may be better. Nowadays, I just use my phone for wide end.

      • +2

For landscape, I always take 6-8 images and stitch them together in Lightroom to create a wider image than m43 can easily do. This was my main gripe with m43 but modern post processing software makes it very easy to do multi-row panoramas.

    $200 cashback, ends tomorrow.

    https://explore.omsystem.com/au/en/cashback-june-2025-terms-…

Already have mark I, if not may get this one.

    • Does this qualify for the cashback? Usually that's only available for cameras purchased through authorized retailers.

      • If seller is Amazon Au, they are usually authorised. I have bought various camera brands in the past and got factory cash backs.

      • If you click "Redeem Now" button, in the "Store of Purchase" list, there is Amazon AU.

    • Thanks for this, just claimed for the em10 mkIV I got a couple weeks ago

  • +2

1000+ more expensive than an om1 on sale for what is basically firmware update is crazy

    • +1

Can you show me how to get OM1 mk1 for $1500?

      • +1

I managed to combo a Camera House deal and a $300 eBay discount to get one new for $1400 earlier this year. The OM-1 was a solid camera but basically gave me none of the auto focus (face eye detect for people) improvements I was hoping for over the EM1.2 that I had. Ended up moving off the system entirely and onto a Canon R8 (sold the OM-1 for $1500 and got the R8 for $1400). I miss my 20mm f1.4 (don't fall in love with 40mm lenses as it really limits your choices) and compact zooms but I don't miss much else. I do look back at plenty of amazing keeper photos I had on MFT but with the R8 I get way more keepers (face and eye detect is far more reliable), the full frame look is nice and the R8 and a 1.8 or 2.8 prime fits in the same sling I had my OM-1 in.

        • +1

I had many great photos including handheld fireworks with the EM1 mk III, then Leica SL2-S, then the R8, but now keeping an eye out for a bargain OM 3 for compact travelling.

          • @Buy2Much: I really like the look of that camera but having had an EM5.3 for a while, then switching for the much preferring the bigger grip of the EM1.2 I just know I won't get along with it.

  • Would this be better than the COOLPIX P950 Super-Telephoto for bird photography, in flight and close ups?

    • +4

I mean….. the OM-1ii is a much better camera, but you're not going to get much reach without a lens to go with it.

      • Ok, might go for the COOLPIX P950 then, no budget for extra lenses. Thanks

  • -6

Who needs camera these days with AI image.

If you take a good shot people will think its AI anyway.

    • I took a fairly nice astro-landscape shot recently and was asked if it was AI. :-(

  • -1

In this price range. Get a canon R6 mk2

    • +1

RF mount cameras are great but their lenses are still a bit expensive, not sure when they are going to release their mount data to other manufacturers.

  • -1

M43 is becoming a niche, just about the only selling point is price/size/weight of matching telephoto lenses. I.e. wild life and sports. Not suitable for motorsport requiring panning.

For most people, APS-C is more practical, or full frame if budget allows.

    • +1

I've had no issues with panning, including low high-speed passes by RAAF jets

      • +1

I had Oly EM1-ii with 40-150, success rate was every low. It won't correctly focus on a moving car/bike, typically at 1/125 or 1/160. Often parts of the subject are not sharp enough to be acceptable.

At the same time I had Nikon D810 with 70-200, after selling the Nikon, bought a Sony A9 with 100-400. The panning shots from both Nikon and Sony are far superior than the Oly. Subjects are sharp, with spinning wheels and motion blur background, much much higher success rate.

I did travel with the Oly with a 12-100 for many years, very compact considering the reach.

        • +1

The OM-1 series has subject detection for a number of things including cars and planes, had no issues and a good success rate with an OM-1 and Pana 100-300ii. This was from the Adelaide 500 last year.

          https://i.imgur.com/VqYfSYF.jpeg

My old E-M5ii was a different story, low success rate but still a few acceptable keepers of the jets, cars were generally fine.

To those recommending alternatives: Are most OzB camera shoppers buying into a new system or just looking to upgrade? This is a good price for people already invested in MFT gear. I’m so tempted.

    • +6

I imagine most are either just recommending what they have because obviously that's the best, or they're clueless apart from knowing FF is bigger, and bigger is better.

This is a great price, and if I hadn't already jumped on a mk1 when the mk2 came out I'd grab one. As for the system it's awesome being able to pack a body, a 600mm zoom lens, a smaller pro zoom lens, and a couple of primes into a 4.5L bag. Hell I ended up taking two M43 setups overseas a few weeks ago and both easily fit in the bag I threw under the seat on the plane.

  • -1

Video pro has the G9 II under 2.5K. Way better body IMO…..

No actual user experience as I am now iPhone shooter.

If I were buying from scratch I would go Sony or Nikon Full Frame. M43 is too expensive these days.

    • Sony ebay has refurb cameras too. The a7iv is like $2259 and I ordered the a7r5 for less than $3500. Otherwise, the a6700 is pretty good for sub $2000.

      • +1

I think i saw the a7 iv go down to ~$2600 a few months ago new. Im holding out for that price!

        • +1

It'll go even cheaper in the next year. According to rumours the A7V is meant to be released this year. Roughly $2500 with Sony cashback which seems to occur every six months https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879720

I managed to snag some "cheap" CF express A cards from pergear so hoping they'll be good (2x 512gb for $350).

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: Sadly I cant wait. Promised to shoot my cousins wedding in November.

Praying it does come through this year, so i can grab an 7iv cheap.

A7V rumours sound amazing, but im upgrading from my Canon 5D MkII haha, so anything will do.

If anyone has used the Sigma EF adapter with OG Canon L series lenses, Let me know how it went. I'm hoping to keep using my 85L for now.

            • @hypie: I used MC11 on A7 III with 16-35 f4L and 135 f2L, both ok for still images. You may not expect high rate of AFC.

            • -1

@hypie: Seriously, just sell you old lens while you still can. You will not be able to us adapters for ever and eventually you will have to get rip of your EF lens unless it is some very special like 50/1.2.

If you really want to keep your EF glass, may be you should consider a canon body instead and use the EF-R adapter with control ring.

    • +3

lol "I've never used them, but * is way better"

Depends on what you shoot, generally if you're prioritizing stills then it's Olympus/OM System, if it's video then go Panasonic. They're both great and have their own strengths.

  • I can't see myself need anything more than the OM-1 with the 20mm f/1.4 Pro, 75mm f/1.8, and 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro w/ 1.4x Teleconverter for a really long time.

I could do without the 75mm, but it is compact, light & I got it cheap. Plus it is an amazing lens.

As for the features and ability of the OM-1, I will use it until stops working, it has everything I need and more.

For me it is the all-round value of the system, there's always great value new and secondhand and it covers the most ground without spending 4x the amount.

I also enjoy the build quality and ergonomics.

    • +1

It is the best one that fits in my hand, and has very fast sensor readout, basically black free. I have 40-150mm f4 pro, 12mm f2 and 75mm f1.8. Cannot find similar size and quality lens in other system. Probably keep them as they go.

I tested Z50ii with 300mm pf lens against OM1 + 40-150 pro, found OM1 AF is much better - lock on faster, hit rate almost doubled. Possible the FTZ problem as everyone sings for Nikon's new body AF?

  • be interesting to see what happens to OM as a brand now that they are no longer with Olympus, I'd be a little concerned about that, but if it suits your use case then YOLO it.

    • +2

The camera division was not doing well under Olympus for many years anyway. Atleast JIP has given them a second lease of life. Under OM Systems, one new model (OM-3) has been released and some minor tweaks to a couple of other existing models (OM-1 MKII & OM-5 MKIII). m43 has a great selection of lens of very good quality and size of the lens are a big advantage for travel photography.

OM Systems would have a brighter future if they focused on smaller bodies (the essence of m43's) like the OM-5 MKIII. A good number of m43 users would also love to see a new PEN-F rangefinder style replacement, now that would potentially be a big seller in the m43 community.

  • White tele zoom lens price in the amazon ad photo?

    • It might be the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC 1.25x IS PRO

    • Would be the 150-400, their only white lens, currently around $11k.

      https://explore.omsystem.com/au/en/m-zuiko-ed-150-400mm-f4-5…

Being M43 format, it's equivalent to 300-800 in full frame, or 1000 with TC (at the expense of aperture). Size/weight/price is the area M43 excels, but not exactly comparing apple with apple, sensor and optics are different across formats

But some people may argue that traveling light with M43 gets to places you wouldn't have otherwise, so it's good enough photos vs no photos at all.
