  • Anyone use these with libreelec/ kodi running on linux?

    • +1

Yep on Ubuntu 24. Had to switch to 60 hz as for some reason 30 was the default. Streams well at 4k where my old Android box couldn't do it.

      • Can you get 4k@60hz 12 bit and use HD audio, TrueHD and DTS-HD etc?

If you have a receiver it'd be good to know if you can pass-through those HD audio types

        Thanks

I have this and the plus model.
The plus supports NVMe while this model is SATA (over m2).
I can feel the difference, this model seems laggy / slower.

In saying that. For the price it’s insane!

    • +2

Thanks will wait for the plus

      • Don't expect miracles. I have the plus, it NVMe is 1 PCIe lane. 850MB/s vs 540MB/s for SATA.

    • +2

g2plus is till sata. The difference is probably from n150 vs n100

This would eat a raspberry pi 4/5 for breakfast for running Home Assistant.

    • But draw more power?

      • +3

hardly, these N100/N150 units are very efficient

        • +5

you'd be surprised, the raspberry pi 5 is not the power sipping chipset it used to be. They're likely very similar, except the N100 has faster IO. Virtualisation support with Proxmox, and just all around easier.

          • +1

@Commodore64: Yeah Pi got greedy when they listed on the stock exchange. Pi is no longer competitive, unless you like the ease of the prebuilt images or need GPIO. The Pi does idle at lower power than Intel, though.

            • +1

@RedHab: I’ve got an ancient J series Brix which I setup for my mother as a HASS box. Even that’s running better than the pi. Although the Pi 5 comes as passive, I’ve found it doesn’t like being hammered both power and thermal wise.
Better yet the Intel has NVME and SATA built in.
Credit where credit is due: the Pi’s camera connector is badass.

        • mine idles at 9w running proxmox with practically nothing, in Power saver governor

    • +3

Thought i'd provide some info on the power usage for the Raspberry Pi 5 after coming across this thread.

I checked the power usage on my pi 5 and averages 3.6-3.7W. Consumption was checked with a TP-link HS110.

My pi currently runs HAOS with around 20+ devices and with an Adguard home addon for ad & tracker filtering.

While i agree that the Pi 5 has limited power, I don't think most users will hit that bottleneck for HA. On the contrary, the lower power consumption would be of greater benefit for many.

On the flip side, for those looking to set up a home server for media or running more than HA, this deal is a far greater value.

Hopefully we get a Soyo M4 Pro deal soon

  • Can we use it for MS Office too ?
I read that we need to reinstall the windows to ensure no malware built in. How do you it ?
Normally I would have a disc to format the drive then reinstall.

How was the warranty with Ali ?
    Thanks

    • Download the ISO from Microsoft website.
Copy to USB stick (look into Ventoy)
      Install from official Windows ISO.
      Have fun.

      • +3

        and then run massgravel script

        • +1

What the script is for ?

        • +4

For this one, you shouldnt even need to run the Massgrave script as Windows should just activate automatically (the licence is tied to the board = OEM licence).

I know I didnt need to do the script when I reinstalled Windows on my M6 last week; it activated fine as soon as I connected it to the internet.

      • Thanks

  • -1

    Does it come with spyware?

    • +4

Kind of irrelevant as you should always reinstall your OS yourself when buying a computer from anywhere

    • +2

I think he is asking about hardcoded spyware on the chips themselves… :)

    • +1

      Is the pope catholic?

  • +1

    Sniff your packets

  • Will all the devices be recognized by the Windows installer, or will the drivers (at least for LAN, storage, mobo) have to be sideloaded?

    • When i bought mine last year windows installed all the drivers except one, but I can't remember which one. It was either Lan/WLAN or BT.

  • what sort of video does it use? I notice it's integrated but can it do 3D at all. please?

  • I've read that these are not ideal for opnsense due to their Realtek NICs. What sort of mini PC should I be looking at? A Topton box? or a mini Dell/Lenovo with a dual network port card?

    • +3

I'm running opnsense with realtek NIC fine.

  • What are people using these for? Genuinely curious

    • +1

if you are going to copy paste an AI generated response, at least get it to format in markdown so we don't have to scroll a whole page to get past your response.

        • Hahhahahahahah gold

Got it — here’s a markdown-friendly, compact and clean version of Hornpub’s response that won’t take up an entire page when posted, but still keeps clarity and structure:

  • Bought It a year ago, my fan start to get noisy. Not sure if the fan is replaceable

  • +1

My pi5 is super slow to boot from a SD card, time to move HA to a new home.

    • +2

Needs nvme HAT but by that time you may as well buy a mini pc

      • completely agree

  • These are more compact made than an Apple. Maybe?

  • How's Autocad on it?

    • Autodesk is poorely optimized. Dont have high hopes. My 12400f ans 3060 barely keeps up with Autocad 2022

      • Thank you.

Any Mini PC that would run Autocad and not struggle?

  • Does this support wake on lan?

  • I have one and recently the graphics has shat itself and the display is all green tinged. Tried other monitors/cables and re installed drivers so guessing it’s a hardware issue. About 9 months old.

  • If using one of these as an HTPC how would you use a remote control? Bluetooth?

My current (old) Intel NUC has an IR port so I can control it with a Harmony remote.

  • +2

Comes up as AU$181.21 for me

  • Dangit, i miss every single one of these
