Coles Australian Beef Rump Steak 500g $10 (Was $15) @ Coles

830

I picked up some of these today and thought the saving was pretty good and worth sharing.

These steaks are much taller/thicker and with a smaller surface area than usual supermarket ones which will be pleasing to people who prefer a more restaurant style cut.

Extra savings possible:

$20 per kg for rump steak is good?

    • +22

In this time of inflated corporate profits it is.

      • -1

How much does it cost at a local butcher?

        • +10

          More

          • +2

@Weshouldgetsushi: The butcher has much better quality and you can get Wagyu Rump for $33/kg

            • @[Deactivated]: Which butcher?
              Not around my way obviously.

              • +2
              • +1

                @Weshouldgetsushi: Meat Emporium sell bulk buy rump for $23/kg (2.5 - 3.5kg) or Angus MB3-4 for $30/kg (1kg pack).
You can cut your steak a bit thicker than Coles pre-cut one.

But I will pick Coles meat any day compared to my local chinese butcher.

                • @OzBestDeal: You would pick a chemical based fake meat over Chinese real meat ?
Why because it’s “from china” ?

                  L take

                  • @HobbiTio: I'm not sure how good your local butcher is. My local chinese butcher meat is not fresh at all. Couple days in the fridge and it start discolour and smells bad.
Not sure if they do proper storage :(

                    • @OzBestDeal: That’s is disappointing than isn’t it.

                      Mine is always fresh.

        • $38.95/kg

        • +1

Our local has rump for $17.99. I buy when its $13.99.
It's a local butcher in our local Foodland. Its a great partnership.
Even Cosi took a photo and uploaded it on his FB page (chicken breasts are $5.99/kg, Bolar roast $7.99).

Colesworths are just having a lend. I would never buy rump at $20/kg.

      • +1

Or is it deflating purchasing power?

        • It's increased prices making us able to afford less with what we have. I'm sure economics has a term for anything.
But large company profits seem pretty healthy as a result.

    • +1

Yeah it's still too dear for me. Guess I'll have to stick to blade steaks. Tougher than calculus.

    • +7

I always pay that for rump from my local Asian market and it is far better than the stuff from the supermarket (and also cut thick, unlike the supermarkets who cut it wafer thin so that it looks like you are getting more)

      • -3

unlike the supermarkets who cut it wafer thin so that it looks like you are getting more

You realise that it is sold by weight?

        • +1

It's sold as lower quality cuts

      • unlike the supermarkets who cut it wafer thin so that it looks like you are getting more

I understand you. Those multiple thin slices they call minute steaks

      • Good news, these are thick steaks. See new comment in post.

    • Does seem like 3 years ago prices yeah

never forget the 1KG rump steaks from coles for $10.99 on special back in 2019.

    Beef exported…price so high now

    • +8

nah - just high profits distorting the market.

Beef exports into the USA have increased since Trump introduced the tariffs…

Trump voters think they are getting a better deal…

        • We don’t import meat from the USA… yet

          • @HobbiTio:

Beef exports into the USA have increased

      • High profits require a high price to exist first, dont they?

    • US still takes AU beef or nah?

    (profanity) coles.

  • +24

    (profanity) woolies too

  • -1

Decent price in 2025 terms, though I'm mostly off beef these days. More than 400% higher carbon emissions per kilo of meat than chicken, and I enjoy chicken about as much.

    • +4

      What about pork?

      • +5

I think it has been pulled!

    • +4

Not as much iron in chicken

      • -2

That’s what makes it less carcinogenic

    • +6

Why is this downvoted so hard?

      • +8

A lot of OzB users are actually poultry and they want to drive me back towards beef

      • +7

Why is this downvoted so hard?

Because in this day and age we don’t allow somebody to offer an opinion contrary to ours without holding them in contempt.

And fake Internet points enable us to express that with extreme prejudice.

        • so true they are so bloody sensitive if you don't align with their core beliefs.

          • @[Deactivated]: My crime was (after praising the price of the posted deal) briefly mentioning a data-based reason why I mostly go for chicken. I do understand how this was taken as a threat to the life and liberty of others, and the downvotes were warranted.

    • Okay so reports are good on the taste and quality. Compared to other supermarket steaks I would rate these a solid 8 out of 10, maybe 8.5 or more for some of the really thick ones. Cheers

        thanks

Wow, even the Coles website photo makes this beef look sad and flavourless. Sick and tired of getting ripped off by colesworth over beef (and meat generally). Lots of beef in a box, subscription services popping up these days, suppose this says I'm not alone. Have recently purchased from a website which connects farmers directly with consumers. Great for bulk purchases, with options for lesser qtys.

Shameless plug and my order hasnt even arrived yet. Just sick of shitty colesworth beef for $60/kg.

    https://farmertofridge.com.au

    Will report once it arrives

    • Thanks, awaiting report

      • Update on this one. Ordered the 5kg box from Two Creeks Beef. $125 incl shipping, so $25/kg. Came with:
        2kg sausages
        1 kg t bone
        500g scotch fillet
        500g rump
        1kg beef roast

        https://farmertofridge.com.au/product/5-kg-mystery-try-and-s…

Honestly, for a couple it wasnt that much beef in the end if you cook meals with meat. Back up option is to freeze a couple steaks, but they come in vac sealed packs so have a min 2 week best before without freezing.

Meat was awesome, killed / packaged the week prior so was super fresh, rump and T-bone steak was extremely juicy. Overall would recommend. Fully supportive of what they're trying to do and happy to give farmers a larger piece of the profit than Colesworth. Win-win for us to get better and cheaper meat and for farmers to not get shafted.

Only thing is to order soon as delivery took 3 weeks (they take orders and then when the cows are ready, ship them all out - so you may be at the behest of these waiting periods… I suppose works okay as you can freeze the meat for consumption in these periods)

I'm looking to purcahse a bulk order (15kg-30kg) with 2 mates if anyone would like to coordinate. I'm located in Chatswood 2067, Sydney. PM me.

    • +1

It's rump, what do you expect? For flavour get a t-bone.

      • +2

I've had plenty of juicy and flavourful rump steaks. Just not from colesworth.

        • +1

this is correct, the coles one has zero marbling, very low grade beef.

      • +2

actually rump has plenty of flavour, perhaps the most flavourful cut.

being able to cook it so that it's tender, is a whole different story however.

        • +2

being able to cook it so that it's tender, is a whole different story however.

          Just microwave it.

        • 3 mins each side on the Weber for medium, after preheating to about 200. Delicious. Tender.

          • @next gen: Gas or charcoal?

            • @TEER3X: Mines gas, I’ve had Woolies rump most of the week like this. I cook the coles stuff the same. I season after cooking, personal preference.

        • How do you cook it (don't have a BBQ)? Would fry pan work?

    • I hope it goes well for you.
We bought direct from a farm (Mooral Creek) - can't remember if it was posted on Ozbargain.
All of it was vacuum sealed.
IIRC, it was pesticide free (not certified organic yet), probably grass fed or something.

Don't remember much else other than we had constipation from that meat…
I hope to hear a better experience.

      • +5

we had constipation from that meat…

Constipation is not from eating that meat. Rather, it’s from the lack of fibre that is not accompanying your meat

        • Not true in our case.
We had plenty of rice and vegetables - that meat was "different".

I'd say that we have bought from farmers markets and not had problems.
We felt that the vacuum packed ones that came direct to us were different.

          • @Zippy7:

We had plenty of rice and vegetables - that meat was "different".

FYI, rice is a grain and not a vegetable. It is a known cause of constipation if too much is eaten. To me, it looks like your meal with meat is not well balanced enough

    • +1

I've got an 1/8th cow and full lamb twice via these guys from Two Creeks Beef I think, was pretty good.

  • (profanity) coles and woolies. Profiteering scum raking in record profits whilst people starve. In fact (profanity) capitalism in general.

    • +1

(profanity) yeah, let’s raise our own (profanity) cows.

      • or you could buy direct from the farmer….

IGA Friday market day specials this week has rump for $13.99 kg. This is my go-to place, for me it's always better beef
    https://www.iga.com.au/catalogue/?utm_source=display&utm_med…

    • Fantastic price but it wasn’t in my local catalog when I clicked the link

      • Same not in my local but they have omo ultimate 4l for 22.95 which is a steal

        • +2

And how would sir like that cooked?

      • Looks like only in VIC. I'm in NSW and few stores around me don't have that either

    • whats market day special ?

    • I bought four steaks and they were great imo, fairly thick cuts too

  • +4

The meat quality at Coles are poo .

The ones from IGA are much better quality imho

    • True that the meat quality is so shite from Coles.

  • +2

Go the corned beef on special if you wanna be old school . It’s nice. Currently $10 kg. Make a Ruben

  • +2

Personally i find always good to look around for specials. For example this weeks special at Tasman if there is one near you might work cheaper. YMMV.

    https://tasmanbutchers.com.au/catalogue

    • Tasman had Y-bone steak for $10/kg last week. It was just as tasty as T-bone with just slightly more grizzly bits. I would definitely buy it again.

  • I find their beef rump medallions to be the best for the price

  • It's still cheaper to buy from the local farmer/butcher in bulk, even with market run of world beef/lamb ATM.
    Chicken has never been cheaper.

  • +1

Random - but does anyone have a good temperature and time for Rump Steak in the George Foreman or an air fryer?

Or am I just cooking steak wrong?

    • Fry it on a stainless steel pan for 2.5mins each side. Medium rare is 53C internal temp.

    • Don’t air fry steak.
I put it in the oven but even that’s bad. Pan fried is best.

    • Pan fry is the way to go. Use stainless steel or cast iron pans due to high heat.

It comes with experience and preference, there's no exact formular, generally 2 minutes high heat sear each side + 1 minute medium heat basting will cook a 1 inch thick steak to medium, maybe a bit on the rare side.

I usually slice it before serve, if too red, sear the slices.

You can also try pan sear then oven, or oven then pan sear, reverse sear as they call it.

  • $20 and under are where I get my steak..

  • +1

Supermarkets cut their rump too thin for my liking. I would rather go to a local butcher and get 500g steak in one piece, not 2 or more.

    • Agreed. Supermarket has to be "price friendly", so their steaks are very thin, by the time you get a good sear it's already cooked all the way through.

We buy from Costco, proper thickness and a lot to choose from, some with good marbling. Though they have increased the prices again, need to get used to more affordable cuts.

    • Good news, these are thick steaks. See new comment in post.
