PayPal Buyer Protection for AliExpress Purchases

Hey all,

I bought a rather bulky item (tent) from Aliexpress, and discovered upon delivery that it was much smaller than advertised in the listing.

Raised a return case, Ali ruled in my favor, asked to ship it back to an address in NSW (PO Box).

Thing is, it's a bulky item, AusPost won't take it (it got delivered via HunterExpress) and I am looking at around $100 out of pocket cost to ship it back.

Subjectively, it doesn't seem fair needing to cover that much postage (nearly 1/3rd of the item cost) given that I am not at fault here.

Did anyone have much luck disputing Aliexpress transactions via Paypal?

Thanks heaps.

Yes did it once when Ali and oclean store on Ali were being difficult to deal with (missing parcel). PayPal stepped in and ruled in my favour. Could be harder in this case though since you did get the product

You will have to pay return postage cost if you go with PayPal route.

I am not at fault here

You bought from AliExpress. You are at fault by default and have waived your right to complain.

You must be fun at parties.

He can afford to be fun at parties.

He's got $100 to spend on booze cos he didn't buy something that cost that much to return the thing.

  • There was a time when you couldn't pursue a claim with PayPal if you had already achieved a resolution through another mediation service.

Are you still eligible to use PayPal?

Additionally, excluding a specific program about ten years ago, PayPal leaves cost of return shipping for the buyer.

Unfortunately, in most cases, onus is on buyer to organise return. Ever had to return something to Kmart and been reimbursed for your petrol costs to get it back there?

  • Claiming anything from AliExpress is a nightmare. PayPal is useless as 7175 on a bull too when dealing with AliExpress - buyers protection or not. It's all BS.
    Just my experiences.

  • Yes, I claimed through PayPal last year, but I didn't have to return it because it fell off a conveyor belt in Melbourne somewhere and Ali claimed it was still in transit for two months.

It turned up about three months later. Free pen!

    • Interesting, never had issues w lost / late items, ali always returned $ no dramas.

  • Seems like they actually cover the cost of the return, IF they deem it's reasonable. I am taking my chances, found a much cheaper road freight, truck goes brrr let's see how it shakes out.

  • Define bulky.

  • Ok, an update on this. Paypal eff'd me over - after conducting their own investigation, they declined my claim.

    Give up not tho.

Raised it w my bank (UBank) providing all the same evidence. Credit is where credit is due, UBank clawed the money back from Paypal and refunded. Took around 30 business days give or take.

So, never give up, go chase those cashbacks however minuscule, claw it all back, because you know it's not about the money, but about winning.
