Amazon Delivered Vegemite Which Was Open

Something strange which I initially thought nothing of but it's been gnawing at me as odd. I just received a jar of Vegemite from Amazon which was wrapped in bubblewrap, and the lid was loose to the point when I picked the jar up the lid was immediately wobbling and came off without having to break any seals.

I thought it must have just come loose in transport, but then began to think about how tough those screw caps are just in general and especially when sealed, and the whole thing was wrapped in bubble wrap.

It looks fine, there's a little hole which breaks the surface and seems a bit layered so I can't see around the inner edges.

Is anybody familiar enough with these jar lids to know if this is really a non-issue as I originally thought? It just keeps gnawing at me as odd and hard to explain how it could have happened if not intentionally.

Need a pic. Variety of different packaging for Vegemite.

But nah, don't settle for unsealed stuff, people do crazy stuff these days, who knows what someone may have slipped into that jar.

Better to err on the side of caution IMO.

    • This is the small hole on the surface. It seems normal enough but I've never looked at the surface of vegemite all that closely before. I guess I could scoop it out with a spoon and look around the area. https://i.imgur.com/MwiVl6p.jpeg

      No need tor any pic.
The lid should be firmly on to maintain the vacuum seal from the factory
The product is packed in vacuum (air removed) for health reasons

If its a plastic screw-on cap, it should be screwed on tight and the safety seal below the cap should be intact and unbroken

Id definitely return it to the sender and/or ask for a refund.

    • I'm not worried about the taste, I'm worried that I can't think of how the lid would have bene unscrewed if not intentionally, and if somebody intentionally opened it what possible reason could they have done it for?

I’ve seen them with loose lids in Coles, but doesn’t sound like they were as loose as yours.

I messaged Amazon and they said not to eat it for safety reasons and they'll send a replacement for free, so win I guess. Still curious about how it happened though, I never really expected it likely had anything wrong with it, just can't figure out how the lid would be unsealed.

It depends who delivered it. My Amazon deliveries come via Australia post during the week and on the weekend random people deliver it. Some of this stuff sits in a family car for a few days before it gets delivered. Anything could happen in that time.

and on the weekend random people deliver it.

There is no way that they'll be 'random'.

  • I'd return it just in case but I have been able to unscrew the lid without breaking the seal before. I don't think they're as a good of a fit as they should be. I'd think it's not impossible for a knock at just the right angle on an already loose lid to deform it and pop it off.

The seal itself was correctly broken, the lower ring was still on the jar.

  • The latest Vegemite I bought has a lid which doesn't screw tight and stay tight. As you screw it tight you have to stop screwing or it will click and be back to entirely loose again.
