290

Was looking at the JB deal posted here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/916029

Did some looking around and noticed that officeworks have reduced the price even further for the same model.
Looks like all colour are available at the lower price.

Do we hop on the only 256gb parade now that we don't have much to moan about these?

Having said that, this is awesome value. A very fast laptop with amazing battery life, and plenty of ram for day to day and a good chunk of development depending on what you work with.

    • -1

Are you implying 256gb is sufficient?

      • +2

With cloud storage, probably? if you're willing to pay for cloud storage

Or for my use case, I have a NAS, I don't need lots of local storage.

        Very heavily user dependent

“Very heavily user dependent” Is the only correct answer.

          • +2

@bunnybash: Correct. Both me and my parents are using 256gb laptops and have plenty of storage left.

My phone is 256gb and I’m close to filling it up.

My ipad has 256gb and has 120gb free.

My gaming desktop that does exclusively gaming has 8tb and it’s nearly full.

My storage management is pretty bad.

really depends what you are using it for.
Most people using this as just a daily work laptop and emails/browsing etc, and aren't doing video editing will find 256GB more than enough.

If you are using it also as your storage for all your photos and movies/music downloaded over time… probably not… I'd suggest getting a separate drive for that anyway.

I use a portable SSD for any large files. Otherwise, 256gb is enough for me and my usage.

I’m starting to miss the downvoters in these ‘not enough Ram or Storage’ posts, I need a laugh at these people hanging out in posts where they wouldn’t buy one anyway.

    • lmao at this point it's the only thing left that's holding it back, the specs are excellent and its converting me to the apple ecosystem because of it, but 256gb is still a bit too small despite the OS's low-ish system memory allocation. I feel like 512gb with 16gb ram is the industry minimum at this point, I'm happy they've made the jump to 16gb ram for this chip and the memory is okay for now for light users, but I hope the m5 sets 512gb as the new minimum. 256gb runs out too quick nowadays when factoring in the odd games on the app store, photos and videos, a couple apps, etc. Which is probably the case for like 90% of users.

      • Yeah about the only good thing that “Apple intelligence” has done is increase baseline memory size. 16gb across the board is almost a relief to see. As an owner of 8gb MacBook Air.

      • they do make 512gb lol have one

        • Yeah I know I just wish it came with the base model price, seems a little expensive to jump 300-400 for an extra 256gb memory, plus I think the cpu has 1 less core in the 256gb base model for those that care, when I'd rather see that pushed to 512gb with 1tb the upgrade option, since it's unlikely people will run out of memory at 512gb on a macbook.

  • Worth it to get the M4 over M3? For average user surfing browsing. Not coding or doing any heavy photo editing. Wouldn’t mind bunging together a few family movies with videos occasionally.

Only thing I keep reading is lack of dual monitor with screen open which doesn’t feel like a use case for me I don’t need 3 screens yeah

    • +1

Depends on how long you keep your computers/Macs for and how tight your budget is. If you plan to keep it for ~3 years, I would strongly urge getting the M4 over the M3 if only for the multiple external screens alone as a long time Mac user. The M4 is roughly 20% faster than a M3, which I think is worth it.

      • The extra external screens is a big thing for me. I wfh with 2 external monitors and couldn’t go back.

Not everyone’s use case though I suppose

    • depends on the price difference (I apologise, I don't check often), but if it's a small difference that you can manage then it's worth the newer model just because the newer tech tends to be more efficient for battery/power, and will handle app and OS updates for a longer time.

That said, my home computer is a M2 Mac mini and for normal work and light photo/video editing it is holding up perfectly well.

    • Only downside you'll probably have is OS support, like probably a year less than m4. But for surfing the web and watching videos you could even use an m1 lmao, they're good chips.

      • For what it's worth, the M1 which was launched in 2020 is still being supported and I'd imagine would have at least 2 years in it, maybe more.

        • Yeah exactly even with the support probably ending a little sooner it'll still probably outlive the macbook itself before they want to upgrade lmao.

  • Anyone able to find a deal for Mac Studio? I missed the JB one and the one offered at OW is just $300 shy of the M4 Max base model on AOC.

  • +2

Waiting for M4 with 16GB & 512GB storage for under $1500 then I will buy..

    • Does this exist? As a stock non Apple Store upgrade

  • +1

As a user of a MacBook Air M1 for the last 3.5 years , I can tell you that 256GB storage only is a pain in the A$$. if you have a half decent music library , photo library, holiday videos or want to do some adobe creative work you constantly have to watch your space, I had to move a lot of stuff onto an external ssd , that ,when in use, lives velcro-ed on the back on the lid. I would never buy that small storage again .

    • +5

How often do you look at your photos? Or holiday videos? External SSD is pretty easy to use.
