What Is a Sales Job That I Can Get into That Pays Relatively Well? Need Ideas Including Commission Only

I'm currently working in a low paid minimum wage retail sales job with very low commission rate and I'm looking for ideas to move on another sales job. I think this kind of content will be helpful for others too.
(I'm in Sydney and open to job offers including commission only)

So far according to my research:

Solar, real-estate, high ticket items, software as service.

What else? I'm in a pinch and in real need to move something else asap.

    Ice or grass

    • +5

Ice sales are only good in Summer. There's huge discounts on ice right now.

      • +4

I load up on ice during winter and resell during summer for big profits

        • Good idea…buy when the market is low and profit when the demand hits….🤔

        • +2

You need to start selling it for more than $1 a bag, we lost 4 more men on that last expedition.

      • Grass is slow in winter too, Maybe just stick with selling drugs through the cold months and chill out for a bit.

      • Guys!!

ice : Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer

grass : colloquially know as lawn mower man

        Easy.

        • What is the Immigration officer selling?

People smuggling is usually frowned upon, isn't it?

If you go real estate, you’ll be a trainee for ages

    • +6

Why do the young people today expect to start at the "top" without doing all the training and learning?

Real Estate is probably the best place to earn big bucks these days.
At least whilst the property market is good.
Its very hard yards when the market goes quiet.
You see agencies closing everywhere when the market turns down

Yes, you start as a trainee.
But thats the same in every profession just for the "young ones" here.

And given OP has no formal qualifications there isnt much choice other than to go to TAFE.

Can't say I've ever seen an agency close…

because certification takes a weekend and the average real estate agent has the cognitive ability of a partially domesticated bird.

If you start at the bottom, you stay at the bottom.

      • Why do the young people today expect to start at the "top" without doing all the training and learning?

Because they learn about Isaac Newton at school but think that means they're already "standing on the shoulder's of giants" before they reach puberty.

I deal with a lot of SaaS vendors, most of their salespeople have a tech background. Because you can immediately tell when they're talking out their rears and it's off putting.

The complete opposite of real estate, from my experience as a buyer. Try asking them a question about a contract and they'll play dumb (or they are actually dumb).

    • but do they have veneers?

    • …but they have nice expensive (leased) EV cars…🤔

  • High end commercial vaccums - not even being sarcastic

    • I sold Electrolux vacuum cleaners door to door for 2 years in my younger days, used to do markets and shopping centres too. Was good money, spares was easy cash too.

      • You should expand on your experiences, I bet you would have some stories. Country Australia really relied on door to door sales for a large part.

  • -6

    Anything to do with EVs.
    or
    Self employ sales>
    Tin foil hats.
Slobbering citizen passports.>Travelling manifestos>Sovereign plates etc. (Go hard and price high)
    Trump dunny rolls.
BYD badges (specially designed to cover Tesla badges)

    • And don't forget:

Door to door Solar panels rep
      Door to door electricity plans
      Door to door charity collectors

  • Digital agencies that sell marketing and web services. But even though you won't do any of the work, you kinda need to understand it to sell it. Same with anything really, you can't just start selling when you don't understand what it is.

  • Funeral caskets. Plenty of cashed up boomers soon needing one

    • There's a new trend of boomers being cremated with their houses, (aka house = coffin) so the selfish gens after end up with zilch. Not sure I think it's morally sound, but to paraphrase the 'Librarian', 'our country, our rules'.
At least it creates a vacant block. (eventually)

Is that something that I'm supposed to believe?

        • Possibly. Would you like to buy a bridge, too?

          • @Protractor: Depends.

How much, where and does it have tollbooths?

            • @LFO: How much you got, Nigeria, no.

              • @Protractor: I'll check with Ozbargain before deciding.

  • Sell Advertising space

    Sell insurance

Sell short term accommodation. (I know a lady who made $60million dollars doing this before she turned 30! Never even completed grade 10).

Is there an alternative to Tupperware yet? Those dudes sold plastic bowls and if they did it well enough got personal commission, bonus team commission, luxury holidays, free company car and a bunch of other free stuff.

    Sell online courses

Some dude on here has some alcohol he wants to sell.

    Sell collectibles.

    Sell exam answer keys.

If you're a decent salesman, cocktail maker/bar attendant at a sports club earns high award/penalty and insane tipping potential.

Sheesh, what a vague question, you could literally sell just about anything. It just depends on if there are people who want to buy what you're offering!

    • Sell out the country. Scomo, Dutto and Albo did it. They are now mega rich. No coincidence

      • -5

At least they sold it. Gillard just gave it away!

        • +3

Do you mean the islands she sliced off (the official recognition) so boat arrivals could not claim refugee status on the islands out on the limits of our sovereign waters? That was a gutless act, where she caved because of pressure from the misogynist club (Abbott et al)
I'd love to know whether she regrets that now.
Personally I think the ALP men were pathetically unsupportive in that era. The LNP men were. Well lets just say , not B words, not D words. Somewhere in between.
A large section of the public should also be ashamed of the way she was treated. They got onboard.
She copped a lot more toxic attacks than a bloke would have received for simply doing mundane everyday political shit..
BTW I wasn't a fan. But I respected her in stepping up to serve in the capacity she did. Her shit delivered more beneficial societal outcomes that MAGA ever will.

          • -1

@Protractor: Nah, I meant the free laptops to students where there was inadequate infrastructure to use them and/or with no method for monitoring or accountability, resulting in thousands being sold by kids and their parents for money to probably purchase booze, smokes and sex.

Then there were the $3 million dollar school sheds available to every school, regardless of their need and without consideration for whatever facilities that school already had.

The greatest legacy of that debacle, was the prefab cookie cutter creations foistered onto public schools which frequently failed to provide improvement or benefit to that school, with some not even able to connect to running water or electricity, far less any kind of heating or cooling provisions to offset the full length plate glass windows facing due west, making inhabitation of those halls impossible.

You know who the real winners were with that shamozzle? The posh private schools who already had plenty of suitable facilities for their students.

Then there were the $500,000 science labs for every school. Smirk - that was so well thought out too and definitely benefited those who actually needed it the most /s

Was it $300k or $500k for each school to create an outdoor tennis facility ffs? Equally well implemented and well thought out /s

And then there was that whole NDIS fantasy which she created, but did so after ignoring the opinions and recommendations of the very people whom she paid to advise her.

Then followed this up by announcing a four year plan, but never allocated any money to pay for it, despite reallocating the state disabilty funds to some other unauthorised brain fart, nor left any indication or instruction on how this four year plan should be funded, managed or rolled out.

While it does sound all warm and fuzzy in theory, she also not only signed us up to a whole new bunch of IHR that we already couldn't afford, but she then had them assented into law but still failed to tell anybody how we were going to pay for it!

I'm sure there are many more.

In all likelihood she was treated like a fool because she was one.

FGS, she even had dictionaries change their definitions of words because she used the words differently to how the word was defined.

Misogynist? LOL, she used that word once, but didn't even know what it meant.

I did give kudos to her "internet nut job" creation though. Whilst I think she probably shouldn't have said that in public, far less an official interview, I think it summed things up pretty well.

            • +1

@Muppet Detector: See the problem with attacking her legacy is that none of your examples matter. It's a few cents in the pond and you bought in to the bandwagon.

We just sold out multi-generational debt for nothing except to appease megalomaniacs and there's been literally less anger, accountability and care. But let Today Tonight talk how some battler scammed the nation $1k…that's your evening wasted.

            • +1

@Muppet Detector: A very conservative QLD view as I'd expect.
After 40 years of inaction on climate change and a campaign run by mining billionaires to end any chance of adult actions, I'd say everything listed may be a poor Gillard legacy, but nothing in comparison.
Even if she was a fool, she was treated like shit far more than a man would have been. Onion man got better treatment despite his CTE affected brain-farts and dragging the country backwards at least as far as you allege Gillard did. In name and in nature. If there was a redneck cause he jumped on it not for sound economic reasons, but childish spite. eg The Renaissance of Forestry at a time when native timber was basically worthless and yet we wasted the resource anyway.( It lined he mate Rob De Fegley's pocket, that's the main thing. The back scratching was palpable ) Anyway I honestly can't be arsed listing the 'but look over there response'. I was pointing out her treatment, which wasn't for being a fool. It was for being female and daring to stick her head up.

            • @Muppet Detector: Wow. What a day. I agree with most of what Muppet Detector said.

  • If you're good looking or quirky in a way that could appeal to somebody's fetidh, sell yourself!

    • I sense a theme.

      • I riffed off your suggestion for frilly knickers.

  • Roller shutters, screen doors, if you are a good sales man the world is a your feet. Just pick a brand or product that has value, you should believe in the product consumers can tell straight away when you are just selling them junk.

  • When I was a kid I sold condoms to the day girls at Catholic School. Box of 12 was $2.26, I sold them for $1 each.

Another time I sold pizza slices and cans of coke for $2 each in the school car park at lunchtime when the school tuck shop went healthy and only sold stuff that rabbits ate.

    • When I was a kid I sold condoms to the day girls at Catholic School

      New or Used?

      • +2

        New!

We were about 13. At that age, most of us still probably thought dicks were for peeing.

It only came about because I (a boarder) was playing truth or dare with some day girls.

I got dared to buy a box of condoms.

Naturally I did and then had to bring them to school to prove I had done it.

Bunches of people started asking me to sell them one.

I charged $1 and was sold out before start of morning tea.

Most girls used them as water balloons in the washrooms.

Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I continued to supply $1 condoms to the day girls until I got caught almost three terms after I started.

I got caught because the mother of one of the girls found an unused condom in her daughter's wallet. When asked from where she got it, she hung me out to dry and dobbed me in.

There was no proof that it was me who provided her with the specific one she was caught with, nor any evidence that I had in fact ever sold/given her one at all….

But c'mon, over 3 semesters, I'd sold thousands of the things, chances are there was a strong probability that hers had at one time come from me.

It was my belief to go down willingly for that one, rather than to have them investigate further and uncover the true extent of my enterprise.

I did end up going down for the sale of three condoms.

Parents were overseas at the time, they were summonsed back to deal with me lol.

    Some people sell bridges.

Others sell things like cars and tvs that don't belong to them.

Others will sell totally imaginary stuff such as bitcoin for example.

A lot of tech companies will take a punt on someone new with a non-tech background if you are reasonably cluey.
To begin with you will be doing inside sales, the new name for telephone sales. It is mainly farming LinkedIn, email, some cold calling, probably trade shows.
You need to be very persistent and disciplined, but it is better than charity cold calling or similar.

Usually - it's best to draw on prior EXP … And work within that market.

So what sort of retail job do you currently work in?
+++ Maybe build up contacts in current job.

A common branch ppl take = sales rep for the company they currently work for … Certainly wouldn't call it big $$$ (think around $60-$70k + commissions).

If you are simply just retail at some grocery store - think about the suppliers to those stores (they all have sales reps) … May be harder to get into the job but still possible.

Build up resume - showing you have understanding of full process

  • Best paying sales job I ever had was in a commercial waste company, takes zero knowledge just persistence and pounding some pavement

  • I'm currently working in a low paid minimum wage retail sales job

Why bother, get a government job and relax, far better pay for far less effort

  • I am afraid the Tulip bulb bubble has already burst but maybe bit coins 🤔…they are purely imaginary and only exist in the ether….

  • OP it's possible. I haven't had a job for 35 years, been in sales and commission only, then my own business in sales all that time.

Selling used phones and gadgets on FBMP and GT is what you call your business?

  • Realty will be a grind in the first 5 years, for newbies. You are looking at door knocking, and flyer dropping daily until an interest pops up.

Pros: great long-term career and high earning ceiling, lots of opportunities to build long-term rapport with clients and industry experts alike, gets you motivated and fit(?).

Cons: very high time investment early into the career and risk without pay, there will always be lots of competing agents better than you, demands very high self-esteem especially when you hit the lows.

  • Anything commercial based or high ticket items but you have to have really good product knowledge.

And you know, that salesmen rapport.

You can get $150k+$400k please easily in the right industry, not cars but saas, medical equipment.

  • Mortgage Broker?

  • Salesforce has been a great career move from me out of sales. You can learn the concepts free on their website. It's mostly problem solving and communication with stakeholders.

  • I'm not too clued up on things, but what about A Home loan type operator.

  • MLM obviously.
Just avoid the pyramid schemes, focus on the trapezoid schemes.
There's no trick, it's just a simple trick!

  • Solar? Batteries should be going off now thanks to subsidy.

  • Just be a job consultant it's farely easy to get, the quality of experience needed is bare minimum.
