This is quite a good film.

Unfortunately, it was also a HUGE flop, making just $22.5 million at the box office despite a $120 million dollar budget. Whoever signed off on that budget, on an unconventional film about a pop star who never broke America and hasn't had a hit song in 20 years, really shouldn't be making those kinds of decisions.

Not to mention, the monkey aspect was a unique choice

I'm more of a gary barlow enjoyer and felt he was the better man.

But Gary Barlow is boring and not interesting enough to do a film on.Robbie was the only one with a bit of bang in the band.

I have this song stuck in my head after seeing this:

Thanks for the comments/reviews- will add to watchlist!

Really fun film. I did not expect to like it so much

  • +9

The critics and people who never watched the movie who are confused by a monkey on the front cover completely ruined what is a fantastic movie.

The use of the monkey makes complete sense in context of what the movies storyline is trying to explain. Plus the CGI is absolutely fantastic, done by the same people who made Planet of the Apes. Blew me away.

I'm not even a RW fan, I think he's an idiot. But seriously loved this movie.

Very sad it did not get the recognition it deserves

Cheers, I was part of the VFX team! Big effort and definitely where most of the budget went, but I agree that it paid off (creatively, not financially)

      • +3

        Wow. That's amazing.
My hats off to you and your team. The VFX is a huge part of why I enjoyed the movie and added a huge amount of depth to the story.
If they went with a younger actor to portray RW or deepfake like all other movies it would have just been another biopic to walk past imo. But using RW as himself with the VFX overlay really added to feeling something for the character.

I loved the hair styles over the years being portrayed on the monkey character and the tattoos being shaved into the body hair. A nice touch.

I'm assuming you are a part of weta FX? If so that's awesome. I watch anything that uses Weta or ILM as the VFX team. Looking forward to Predator Badlands

    • yes I was completely confused I thought it was related to the planet of the apes.
would this be of interest to me if I have no idea Robbie Williams is and in general don't really follow the music industry or have any 'idols'?

      • +1

Hard to say. I personally don't love his music or attitude but enjoyed it. But the theme centres around his family and his dad's relationship and how it affected his choices and explains why he acts the way he does. So dunno if that stuff interests you. Overall it's a pretty good drama style movie.

Looking forward to finally seeing this one!

Are the Gallagher brothers in this?

    Cheers OP!

I don't think I've ever seen a film so universally praised do so poorly at the box office.

The destructive power of clickbait headlines and Reddit comments

  • +2

This movie is actually so, so good.

  • They use the same monkey as the Planet of the Apes

    • Both made by Weta FX, so yes.

wut the thought this was the latest "Rise of the planet of the apes" movie. where Cesar gets old and becomes a global (planet) pop star.

I didn't have much interest in Rise of the planet of the apes, but I have even less interest in this one now. 😂

  • But how is the movie if you think his music sucks?

    Like, think he is talentless.

No need to tell me I'm wrong, that's not kind for you to exert your opinion onto me.

    • +2

I hate him. Think he's a real twat.

      I loved the movie.

  • At this point, i use streaming service deals as recommendations for my stremio library

  • Thanks for the heads up! I was looking forward to seeing this sometime. The monkey thing did throw me off at first but I heard it's because Robbie Williams had doubts in himself and had imposter syndrome and this carried across his life, and the film with the visual metaphor of "playing the monkey". It was more clever than I initially thought and hope to see it soon.

  • Does the song Rudebox make an appearance? Possibly the worst song ever written

    • It does and he gives himself heaps over it

  • I enjoyed this movie far more than that terribly dull Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie.

  • Awwww the summer I turned (profanity) ugly

      • Maybe just maybe.
haha like the chisel to the face, crack that nose.

  • Thx this must be good. I found that anything above 5.9 on IMDB is gonna be a decent film.

  • I watch a lot of movies and this was genuinely one of the best ones I saw last year.

Definitely check it out and watch it properly.

  • +2

Absolutely great film. So what if it was a flop. That’s just accountants playing hot potato with studio money. I was entertained and that’s the whole damn point. Give it a watch.

  • I just watched with the better half and enjoyed it. In fact it made me feel like a better man…

  • +1

This is a perfect example of a really good movie that simply couldn’t draw the punters. Such a shame, I feel like so many ppl missed out on something they’d have liked if only they’d taken the chance.

  • Can't remember how or why i watched it in the Cinema, so out of character. But slowly I enjoyed it in a weird way. Just wish they'd more songs played…

  • Can’t believe I actually cried watching this. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • What's the deal? Ozpimps ride the high seas.
