nbn FTTB to Vision Network FTTB with TPG

Hey guys, my current FTTB NBN plan promo price is running out soon and looking to churn. For context, I live in a strata that only has FTTB. Saw the current TPG FTTB promo that is based on Vision networks and was tempted by the free 6 months. I've put in my address on their website and it said it is eligible for the Vision plan.

I have some questions…

  1. Do I have to cancel my existing NBN plan on my own if I choose to sign up with the Vision plan? Seems like they are using 2 different protocols and I am not sure if TPG will handle the canceling on my behalf?
  2. It seems like it is necessary for the TPG technician to come down and do some physical configurations, I guess this means I will have to request access from the building manager in advance?
  3. How bad is it to switch back to NBN? Does a technician needs to come down again?

Thanks in advance, this is all so confusing despite trying to find information myself…

    1) yes, you need to cancel the NBN connection.
    2) depends where the wiring is, for my building it is open access in the basement, for others it could be in a locked room
    3) yes, you need to be rejumpered (a tech visit) to swap back to NBN or to another provider on TPG FTTB.

you can get 6 months free with iinet on this if you are eligble https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/910373 or via tpg https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/913222
    enjoy having faster internet

    • Awesome, thanks for clarifying that up for me! Yeah those are the deals that I saw. The speeds are really tempting but the only thing holding me back is "locking in" with TPG FTTB. Will have to make up my mind before the 31st 😥

I've had FTTB on vision for a while much better download speeds.
I signed up when Capti were one of the first retailers (https://capti.com.au/ they have australian support, but cost a little extra) if you're worried about TPG then give Capti a shot, they're great.
        You'll love the speed :)

        • I think i'll roll with TPG first and see! Giving them a call tomorrow and see if they can schedule a start date. Gonna place it on my last day of NBN service if possible :D

@Limerence: If they can't line up a scheduled date and retain the free 6 month discount for the sign up, you would probably be better to lock in the free 6 months and just cancel the nbn service when your TPG service activates.
You can technically have both the NBN and TPG service active at the same time into the building, only one of them will be jumpered to your phone line though.
            Good luck!

            • @Xetrok: You are right, yeah that will be savings of at least a few hundreds. Will have to lock it in before the deal's gone! Ty once again for your time in answering my queries :)

  • I'm finding TPG super unreliable nowadays with the network. Constantly getting dropped out, G fast light blinking steadily, etc… sure it's got a much higher speed (400-500Mbps) than NBN which is limited to 100Mbps in my apartment, but I'm thinking of switching back to NBN for the stability/reliability particularly with WFH. Has anyone else experienced this?

    • Oh no… I've already scheduled my appointment 😲 I WFH too, am I cooked?

      • FWIW I had epic service/speed/reliability in my first six months… then it started overheating so I had to put a fan underneath the Adtran modem to keep it cool and stop it resetting during the day… but now it seems to be external. YMMV
