Reliable Business Laptop with Lots of RAM

I am looking for a good quality laptop, from a reputable brand and reliable hardware.

The person who will use it likes to have sooooooooo many browser tabs open, with Chrome, FF, Edge all at once (that's just how they work), so I'm thinking lots of RAM.

Gaming isn't a requirement, though they might be pressured to play a little Roblox, but I imagine most integrated GPUs would handle that OK.

RAM - 32GB+, fast RAM would be good
Storage - 1TB+
Screen - 15" with good brightness and colour.
Battery - Good battery life is important, with USB-C charging

Budget - Ideally $2-3000, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. I would go higher for a reliability.

Take a look at Metabox, good price with good adjustable specs. My previous laptop survived 6 years of everyday portable use until the screen ribbon cable broke. Ordered it for $70 and it's working great now.

    • Thanks. I have not heard of Metabox before, so will take a look, although I'd be hesitant just on the fact I don't know of them.

      • +1

With Metabox, you pay for the specs…. not so much the brand. They're really good!

      • Metabox are Australian rebadged Clevo laptops. Clevo are an ODM that design and build a lot of laptops for other brands.

Have a look at Metabox. I think that ticks the boxes for you and comes with Dedicated GPUs.

I'd get something with probably 64GB of RAM.

    • +2

Doesn't look like a powerful GPU is required as they just want to open up a lot of browsers tabs.

    • Do you happen to know the most reputable vendor—retail or online—for acquiring a Metabox system in Australia?

    Look at Metabox.

Have to agree here, great thinking jv

Reliable ? I haven't met any unreliable laptops in years, unless someone drops coffee on it.

  • Dell. Simple becasue you ask beginner questions.

    • Thanks. Dell is great hardware, but don't assume I am a beginner just because I kept my points concise - I have 30 years software developer experience :-D

If there is anything you think I can add to be more specific or helpful let me know.

You're a software dev with 30 years exp, and can't spec up a laptop? Hmmm…

Most browsers have an option (or by default now) to put tabs to sleep when not in use.
$3000 is a lot of cash for Roblox and new.com.au

If it actually is for someone else, and not you, I'd say stay away from Metabox. They're noisy and heavy units.
I'd go for a Dell/HP/Microsoft and spec up to 64GB RAM if you can.

JB Hifi have lots of deals on laptops at the moment.

        • perhaps COBOL developer?

        • +1

I can certainly figure out specs and compare benchmarks of hardware components, but I am looking for recommendations for hardware, brands with a good reputation etc, and maybe links to a deal if anyone was aware of something suitable.

Your comment re Metabox is valid. They do not want noisy and heavy, which is why I proposed integrated GPU as it will be lighter, run cooler and have better battery life.

If it helps, the browser usage is typically a lot of tabs for SAAS tools for running their business, and medical research.

Why a "business" laptop? Proper business laptops realistically aren't any different from consumer laptops aside from the warranty duration/handling.

If they want a business laptop look for a non-ARM Lenovo, Dell, HP or Microsoft Surface. None of them will have dedicated graphics, so minimal gaming performance.

      Why a "business" laptop?

      tax purposes…

    • +1

I say business laptop purely because it is not for gaming etc and needs to be reliable, and like you say, for warranty as well as service/parts.

    • +1

That's no true at all. Business laptops usually have much better build quality and keyboards. Regular consumer laptops often feel cheap in comparison.

    • +1

Sorry but consumer laptops and business laptops are 2 completely different things. I would know, as I worked for HP for nearly 4 years selling business laptops to enterprise customers.

FYI Dell has the largest market share of business laptops in the marketplace, followed closely by HP and Lenovo is a distant third. Fed government will not buy Lenovo due to security concerns.

      • Why are there security concerns with lenovo?

  • Just how many different porn videos do they wish to open up at any given time and at what resolution?

    • +1

      69 videos
      8K

      There is no limit

      • I suggest going for a 17inch or larger laptop for the user goes blind

  • Lenovo T or P series or HP Zbook should have something with plenty of ram and storage sans gpu. Pretty sure Lenovo P series is configurable up to 96gb ram. Confirmed you can configure a Lenovo T16 with 64GB ram and 1TB ssd for under 3k.

    • Thanks.

    have a look at metabox

  • I doubt you'd need more than 32GB of RAM, its just browser tabs. That being said any Dell Latitude or their new confusing Pro/Plus/Pro Plus lineup you can configure with that amount of RAM or more. Since everything sounds like its in browser you wouldn't need a more powerful processor.

Get them onto Brave Browser (everyone should) and turn on Memory Saver. 16GB will be fine easy.

    • +1

FYI, Brave is chrome-based, like Edge. It is only faster because of the ad-blocking, which can be done with extensions of Chrome/Edge. They all have the same "memory saver"

I'm amazed how well my old 8GB laptop still performs once memory saver is on. At least on Windows - the Linux version of chrome (and so Brave/Edge) seems to be less memory optimised and needs 16GB.

With 8GB, I can run WSL without GUI no problem. 16GB really is plenty for almost anyone. But I have 32GB on the desktop because its cheap, so WTF :-)

      • FYI, It's chromium based. Not chrome.

Google are at war with ad blocking extensions, so good luck now and in the future. Brave just works and is the best version of chromium.

    • Get them onto Brave Browser (everyone should)

      Why Brave over Firefox?

      • +1

Yes, FF is better and not based on Chromium. I am using FF from version 0.9 or so :D

        • FF objectively has a declining market share. It will struggle to survive.

Subjectively Chromium based browsers provide a far better user and browsing experience.

    • +1

I've tried (I'm a dedicate Brave user for over 5 years)

I’ve checked everywhere, no one is offering a laptop for $2

  • OP should have a look at metabox

  • +1

I went thru this recently, I ended up with a Lenovo P16s. Waited for one of their fake sales which lined up with 15% cash back from Top Cash Back. Paid approx. $1850 odd less the cash back which I haven't received yet.

It only came with 16gb of RAM but has 2 upgradeable slots. I'm going to buy either 2x32gb or 2x48gb then install it myself.

Seems odd that Metabox has been recommended in this thread five times, and there's only been one bargain post for a Metabox laptop in the last three years?

I'd recommend keeping an eye out on this search link for laptops with 32GB RAM on the Lenovo outlet - there's a Yoga Pro 9i on there currently that would fit the bill nicely here:

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/outlet/en/laptops/?visibleDatas=16…

    • Looking now. Cheers

    • +1

Cause it's actually a good laptop for the money. The name sticks not because it's cheap, it's because people have had good experiences with that company
