  • is it bound to Optus network?

    • +3

      No. Unlocked

      • +1

And Pixels are easy to root as well.

        • +17

Rooting an android sounds like a disaster. Though I suppose if Krillin can do it, anybody can!

    • Flagships are never locked to any network. This has been the case for a very long time now. Low end phones are the ones that are sometimes locked to networks, Google does not make low end phones. Pixel Pro > Pixel > Pixel A Series. Even the a-series is a midrange line.

      • A very long time = more than 10 years ago? The only way I could get the OG Pixel in 2016 was with Telstra. I was able to cancel the Telstra part straight away, though they did bill me less than $1 the jerks. Hate Telstra lol. I'm glad unlocked is the norm now. At the time $1400 was the most expensive phone. Even more than any iPhone. My first flagship phone and loved it.

  • it is out of stock already.

Here before the comments who believe in time travel

    • +2

      What?

  • +22

Here - I’ll say it on behalf of the OzBargainers ;)

    It was $499 at Telstra.

For reference before I get negged hard x

    • +11

My DeLorean is in for repairs ATM, flux capacitor issues.

      • +5

That's a common issue with that model year. Take it back to Texaco and have them swap the timing belt too.

      • If you wait long enough Telstra will probably have replacement flux capacitors for $499 so you wont miss retrospective ozbargain deals again👍

      • No it's Not.

        Waiting for incoming Mcfly comment

      • +1

Yeah the "issue" is you don't have one!

    • OzBargain has this boner for negging someone to oblivion for comparative pricing

      • +3

Yeah but there's no point comparing pricing that has been unavailable for months.

For what's available today the pricing is good.

        • -3

I don't buy into the "this is a good deal, because the actual good deals are unavailable presently."

I get what you're saying in terms of value for the price as is, but in my opinion, no this still isn't a good deal simply because you can get the Pixel 9 Pro for about the same price if not $100 more.

          • @marshmall0w2: It's a decent deal.

The pixel 9 pro was for an extra 200-250ish and it was pretty much sold out online quick and it's practically zero stocks in stores after a day.

This is a decent deal the pixel 9 pro was a great deal (possibly too big of a discount) which is why it was gone so fast and practical unobtainable.

My bet would be to wait for the new pixel phone tho

            • -1

@alteyez: I don't think stocks are an issue for the Pixel 9 Pro. The $499 is definitely an unbeatable deal. My decent deal for the Pixel 8 Pro would actually be maybe around $578, not $700.

              • @marshmall0w2: Stocks were an issue when the pixel 9 pro hit the 850-900 mark recently for the 125gb it appears that it's only recently that stock has somewhat returned.

A deal that isnt for you doesn't mean it isn't a deal for other people?

Considering how many people got the pixel pro 7 when it was 450-500$ in the recent sale I reckon the Pixel 8 Pro dropping to below 600$ will only happen when the new phone comes out in a few months. Wanting sub 600$ right now when greymarket is still in the 700-800 range would be unrealistic and it would basically be bought out by the flippers.

                • @alteyez: The Pixel 7 for $500 was not great imo. S23U was about $850 too.

    • +1

As someone who purchased this deal, I can comfortably say that this is all the phone is worth.

  • +6

Decent deal, but given a lot of OzBargainers will take $499 at Telstra from a few months ago as the baseline now, will probably not get much love.

Also the other thing to consider is the 9 Pro XL can still be had at $922 from the Good Guys, might be better value for people who don't mind the bigger phone

    • +2

TGG deal is OOS at most stores and in store only.

      • YMMV I guess. I have 3 TGG stores within 15-20 mins of me that have stock for instore purchase still

    • +1

jbhifi cranbourne has 9pro xl 256gb for $998, just saw it today

  • +1

Hmmm. Time to upgrade the S20FE?

    • +2

No way bro, S20 FE rocks. Replaced my battery not long ago, good to go for another few years.

      • +1

Alright, I'm gonna do this for now. Thanks.

        • +1

Cool, the hardest part is removing the old battery, Samsung really stick it in there. Use a hair dryer to soften the glue.

I don't even know why it needs to be glued in, so I removed the double sided tape on the new one.

    • 100%, really great camera and good phone overall, the only downside is the battery, it's good but not great and the slow charging. I'm sure you could live with it for that price.

    • No. Keep the S20FE. Alternatively, the S23 Ultra was literally at $800 like wtf.

    • This is the phone that made me stop buying Samsung.
It fell about 80cm (with a case) and the screen never turned on again

  • +4

Really not worth it at this price as you'll likely be able to grab the Pixel 9 Pro for not much more in the coming weeks.

    • Maybe.

If the 10 has much higher pricing you can keep the Pro at current pricing and it will still look like a good deal.

    • +1

They do the price drops prior to release to clear stock, but afterwards the price tends to bounce back up otherwise nobody would buy the new model.

  • -8

    Downvoting.
The battery issue is widespread. The issue is more widespread than being reported. Google has unbelievably done as little as possible to make amends for this.
Nerfing everyone's battery, effectively removing the ability to use it for a full work day, as an attempted fix resulted in even more technical problems.

    • +1

Not sure why you're getting negged.

For a 5050 mAh battery, it's pretty pathetic. The S25 Ultra has a 5000 mAh battery but 60% longer battery life.

      https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/samsung-galaxy-s25-u…

The Google Tensor SoC is a PoS.

Rebadged Samsung garbage that they won't even use in their own flagship phones.

      • +1

They seem to be talking about actual issues with batteries that are happening with 6a and 7a. No sign yet it has impacted other models, hence the negs I believe.

Tensor being shit with battery compared to Snapdragon, and probably MediaTek too, is a whole other thing.

    • Not sure it was worth negging the post as it is quite a deal, although it is important to make people aware of the current battery issues plaguing quite a few pixels including this one. So thank you for sharing that despite the neg. Very unfortunate situation affecting too many pixel phones atm

      • +3

I don't understand why they just don't use the Snapdragon CPU and be done with it. The Tensor chip is horrible, I had the P7Pro and moved to the S23 and then to the P8PRO and now to the S25 Ultra and I can speak of how bad the tensor CPU is. just using instagram and browsing the internet, it should be okay, anything else the CPU will struggle.

On the plus side, the Pixel camera is amazing. But the competition, is not far behind.

    • been using it for 2 years without issues.

I'm also not running google's software so no chance of them "nerfing" my battery :)

      • Another graphene user?

        • Graphene is but one of many ways to run Android without Google :)

  • There are a few brand new Pixel 8 phones on eBay around that price brand-new unlocked. Not sure if all are AU stock but possibly even better priceif you can use a coupon.

    • This one

      isn't pro but it's 256gb

    • probably bought for $299 from Telstra deal to resell

      • +1

        Was it $299? I think $399

      • You still can resell for 100-200 profit I guess?

  • +1

Just a reminder this phone is terrible.

    • -1

Just a reminder, this phone has been the best out of all the other flagships I used from Apple and Samsung :)

      • -2

I tend to agree with Seaword.

I bought one during the Telstra $499 deal, and quickly sold it.

        1) The default screen scale (too zoomed out) and font size were a bit weird, and I couldn't set them to something comfortable.
        2) Constant network drop off. Not sure why, but it kept losing wifi signal, briefly going out of network. Never had this with any other phone.
        3) Despite supposedly being the best camera phone, portrait mode was a hit and miss, not capturing the details of the hair, likely blurring it off.
        4) Hard to find a good screen protector due to the slightly curved edge.
        5) Battery is a bit meh.

Overall, it's a decent phone, but those small things were enough to turn me off and switch back.

        • switch back to what? You will never be able to get previous gen flagships from Apple and Samsung for $499. So you have to take the price into account to make a fair comparison.

          Further,
          1) Totally subjective, and can be easily changed in settings.
          2) Never had any connection issues on wifi or on network signal.
          3) Portrait mode has been fairly accurate based on my use
          4) Huh? Screen isn't even curved. Any screen protector from ebay will go along just fine.
          5) 2 years in, and still lasts me a whole day, which is all I need.

          • @ozbargain-pashim: Yeah these are subjective. Chill out.

And check your fact. Screen is flat but the glass isn't. It is slightly curved.

            • -1

@aveeno bb: Should've guessed you won't be worth my time writing out a response. Oh well.

              • -2

@ozbargain-pashim: Lol okay don't get upset over sharing a difference of opinion. Grow up. Life is tough.

                • -1

@aveeno bb: Upset? Perhaps projecting your own insecurities onto others online isn't a good idea. Grow up.

                  • @ozbargain-pashim: Yes thanks for your life advice! Not sure why people get so angry on the Internet!

                  • @ozbargain-pashim: which part of my response was projecting insecurities? happy to have a conversation, no need to attack :)

                  • @ozbargain-pashim: and did you check the fact? did you have a look closely at your p8p screen? is there a slight curve around the edge? why change the topic from talking about a phone, to personal attack?

                  • @ozbargain-pashim: I can tell you are so proud to own a p8p and can't stand anyone talking down on your precious baby, but people can share their opinion on ozb, respectfully, without calling someone "projecting insecurities".

                    • @aveeno bb: Happy to keep this conversation going! Love me some good argumentation, even though I don't see that you have any.

                      • you accused me of being upset, which is likely a reflection of your own mental state rather than it being an accurate description about someone you know nothing about.
                      • I changed the topic and shifted to a personal attack? or you failed to address the points I made initially then proceeded to think that I'm upset about it haha
                      • I don't know what kind of fact checking I need to do when I used the phone for 2 years and gone through plenty of screen protectors without any issue. You're clearly out of depth on this point it's embarrassing.
                      • You're back at it again wow haha. I'm not "proud" to own anything. People can share their opinions, but they should expect to get called out when it's nothing of value, exactly as I did to you.
    • -1

Just a reminder that the only phones that can compete with this phone are iPhone Pro Max and Galaxy Ultra. And those of us that prefer Google's UI will pick it over them.

    • Just a reminder that your personal opinion means jack

      • Sorry to trigger you over some real life feedback.

  • Just two weeks ago? You could get a pixel 9 pro for $200 more

  • Last month Telstra sold it for 499. Optus price matching?

    • More like Optus clearing stock for pixel 10 incoming

  • From the $499 group. It is a great phone but lacks battery and 128 GB is just not enough.

Photos are fantastic especially night and astro photos. It is really fast too but I don't play games. Haptics are also the best I have observed.

    • -2

Not enough for what? Your Steam library?

      • I do part time study so have lectures (2-3gb each) and notes. Also, kids sports/events photos and videos. Fills up pretty fast.

  • Is this phone still worth buying? Read a bit about battery nerfs. Looking to replace current phone but don't know whether to go for this or wait and see what deals are on offer towards the end of the year. Thanks.
