Good deal, thinking of trade in my 2 years old p8 to jb and get the pro, $150 out of pocket.

    • +5

Cool. Please can you explain how this works?

      • +3

Well, assuming you are/going to spend some money at JB.
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/tradein trade in your phone for JB gift card. Eg pixel 8 128g valued at $349.

        Buy from Telstra for $499

        • +2

You'd better hurry, they'll drop the trade-in value now

        • +2

Now you've tempted me to trade my P8P 256GB in for $485 and get new (128GB) for $15.

Edit. Actually can trade phone into Telstra for same price.

          • @Whatisthatvelvet: So it looks like the trade in value is credited to Telstra account. So best bet would be to get new phone over 12/24 months and let the trade in value pay the new phone off over that period

          • +2

@Whatisthatvelvet: apologise if this is a silly question: why do you want to spend $15 to switch your phone to the same one with half the storage?

            • +2

@kelvin-200: New battery and bit more shiny maybe ?

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Fair enough. My Xiaomi 11T Pro's battery is also acting funny recently even though the rest of the phone is perfectly functioning

I can't justify buying a new phone after a few years due to battery degradation tho.

                • +1

@kelvin-200: Same, but if possible as above for $9-$50 I would also seriously think about it.

My still as new little used Pixel 7 only worth $180 trade in value, so will be using that for next few years yet unless I drop it badly lol.

            • +5

              @kelvin-200: Not silly at all.
My 256GB P8P is the first phone I’ve had with this much storage as all my previous have been 128gb. I dont go anywhere near even the 128gb and my current phone is only using about 70gb atm. So as I bought my P8P on release its almost 2 years old and as I've been happy with it a brand new P8P with new battery and warranty is a decent deal for me. It also appears after looking further now that Mobile Monster/Guru offer almost $600 for my old P8P so I would look at maybe even getting the 256gb or just pocketing the difference.

              • +6

Now this is why I joined OzB!

        • +1

Thanks. I just checked and JB will give me $260 for my Pixel 7 Pro, so $239 for the Pixel 8 Pro.

          Not bad really.

    • -1

      Could I do this with a 7a?

    • +2

Mobile Guru supposedly pays $390 for a 128GB Pixel 8 if it's in mint condition ($430 for 256GB).

This is interesting, because theoretically you can renew your 2 year old Pixel for $9.

  • +7

    Crazy good deal.

  • +6

I'd avoid the Pixel 8 even at this price, quite common to end up with a green screen issue and the return policy sucks unless you buy direct from google (they want you to send the phone back first).

That's the base pixel, not sure about the pro.

    • +21

Never had a problem with my pro

      • Same here

      • Same. Love the pro and I'm likely to keep running it for a few more years.

      • Okay

      • +1

I had the 8 pro and upgraded to 9 pro xl. Have to say the difference in battery life is night and day.

Edit: this post is still a pretty great deal though IMO

      • Same, pro has been brilliant

    • +1

I see no difference in buying from Telstra or the Google Store itself, same warranty cover!

      • You've not had some bad dealings then. Samsung notoriously bad to deal with directly, but retailers will ease that burden (probably due to contracts or something). Not sure on google though, havent had to deal with them.

    • +3

Never had that issue with my base pixel 8

    • +2

I had to return two 8 pros before getting one where the camera didn't cause it to crash and reset.

    • +1

Been using my pro for 1.5 years no issues. Best phone I've had in a while

    • I had a screen issue with my Pixel 8. First, a bright pink vertical line appeared. Eventually, the screen died. I bought it from Mobile City eBay. Google warranty wanted me to send the phone back first, but they dispatched a new phone as soon as the courier picked up the old one. I used an old phone during the swapping time.

      • So you had to back up all your documents and apps and wipe your phone first?

      • Had the same issue from the same store. I spoke to Google warranty and just advocated that I had no spare phone and if they could out a new one in advance. Didn't have to press them too much but their default handling is to have you go back to the reseller. Which we know is going to be a 3 month turnaround whilst they get you to do the 100 steps that have nothing to do with the underlying hardware issue. Just have to be firm when you approach Google and they were very quick and responsive to resolve the problem.

    • Had the green screen problem. But had it RMAd with Google

    • bought mine on release for $828 damn should've waited! No issues with the phone!!

    • Same. 7 months in I had severe screen flickering before it got to green screen and then total black screen. No physical defects at all on inspection at JB hifi and never had that issue with my previous pixels. Returned to Jb hifi only to get offered a refurbed device and no info on whether if it was a hardware issue. Ended up trading in my refurbed device for an s24 ultra elsewhere.

    • I've gone through 2 Pixel 8's returned through Google under warranty (originally bought through Mobileciti which had a even more hassle return process), also a lot of hassle through Google (swollen battery and replacement refurbished phone had some hardware issues).

I'm on my 3rd Pixel 8 now and it hasnt been a year.

Never any issues with my previous Samsung phones which are still working flawlessly.

    • quite common to end up with

      Define 'common'?

    • got a normal 8 and havent had an issue,, just googled now and there are people that have it. Anyway you would be pretty unlucky to have the issue

    • My only issue was a faulty camera after it went in water. Bought direct from Google and they replaced under warranty (no "water damage" indicator). They sent the new one before I had to send the old one back. Was a great return.

    • so bad phone???

      • +7

        so bad phone???

Nope. Every product on earth has someone somewhere complaining about it. You'll never hear from the 99.99% of owners who are happy, just think about it that way.

    • +6

We have Pixel 8 Pro. I don't agree completely with the article. Most of the software issues have been resolved since the article was posted 1 yr ago.

While it's not great for a flagship, at this price it's a no brainer - it's a fantastic deal, especially Pixel 8 Pro 255Gb.

    • +1

I agree with the fingerprint sensor being poo. But I get 5-7 hours screen on time for my 8 Pro. Generally on wifi though, 4G/5G drains the battery noticeably quicker.

      • The reviews aren't about Telstra.

    • -3

      @87percent, Weird…you're associated with Telstra & posting a link to bad-reviews of P8?

      • +3

what does me being associated with Telstra have to do with a phone's review?

        • -4

          Maybe a surprise for a Telstra-associate to post a bad-reviews for a Telstra-offer…normally don't associate post bias &/or MIS-information to MIS-lead?

          • @ab c: pixel 8 is not made by Telstra, a JB HI Fi rep can say a product is bad to get you to buy a nicer or more expensive product. Not sure what delusion you are on

          • @ab c: @ab c

            Misinformation?

            Username checks out.

    • +1

Anecdotal evidence from some random internet person here - I've had my P8P for a little over a year now, no complaints. Came from an S21, battery on this is better, performance is better, camera is better and no issues so far.

Wait till drop below $250 to level motorolos.

    • +6

      Keep dreaming 💭

      • -3

I don't dream these, I still use a Windows Phone!

        • I see, your dream never come that why still using windows phone. Make lots of sense 😂

          • -2

@Dumpshid: Buy property instead of upgrading phones to newer models frequently to put them on the table with wallet and car key to show off. Dream big ;). Now I dream to chip human brain before e.g. you trying to chip car! I am confident I will do it, as well. Dream big son, dream big :)

            • @SYLTB: Come on, you compare buying a phone to a property 😂 buying phones or toys, you use spare money may be 1% of your saving. Your dream is way too big that why it never happens. Wake up wake up 😆

    • -1

      motorolos

Is that a Motorola that's been rolled over by a motor vehicle?

      • -1

It's the Latin American brand name.

    • -1

Kudo to Motorola-AU for encouraging price-competition.

      Edge-50-Neo need to be ~ $300: similar bang-for-buck, https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-edge-50-neo…

  • +3

How to buy without a plan?

    • Just go to a Telstra store.

      • None of the stores seem to have it in stock

  • +6

While I am hunting for a 12G/256GB non Chinese brand phone, I don't think I will get Pixel 8 Pro even at this price.
I will wait for great price reduction of Samsung S25 instead.
    P8 is so heavy 216g VS S25 162g
and it's CPU is so slow AnTuTu: 1151243 (v10) Vs S25 AnTuTu: 2193701 (v10), not really future proof given it has another 5 years of update.

    • +1

Appreciate the comparison. I think pixel 8s camera is arguably better but awful lot of negatives to negate that unfortunately.

    • They're mostly made in china with their own special hardware 🙂

    • -1

Samsung S25: what is the cheapest price: ATL WITHOUT any-trick/cheating-the-system & conditions, ie zero-risk purchases?

S25: your price?-> 'I will wait for great price reduction of Samsung S25 instead.'

  • +1

I know you can buy it outright, but do you still need to be with Telstra?

    • -2

      No activ plan required

      • I tried to check one out signed in with my Telstra ID and it said I required an active plan. Was considering an 8 and 8 Pro for me and wifey. But it wouldn't check out. Is there some trick to it?

        • +1

I have no idea, last time i had a plan with Telstra was back in 2020 but i was still able to order a P8P

          • @dosada: Lucky lad. Mine specifically said to choose a plan. Was obsidian 256gb. Did you grab the 128?

  • +6

I'd avoid this phone, I got this phone for free and even then I sometimes don't think it it's worth it. Phone gets incredibly slow. Apps that are literally made by Google such as maps and YouTube often freeze.

    • +8

Sounds like you got a faulty or fake one.

    • +1

Do a factory reset and see if that fixes it? Never experienced any slowdown even with heavy gaming, it's a flagship phone.

    • +1

Thankfully we aren't getting it for free so that's not going to be a problem for us.

  • +1

Got the Pro for 181k points.

  • Feel sorry for those who bought the 7 pro last week for the same price.

    • +2

I got the Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB from the $699 deal.

      • where did you buy the pixel 9 pro

  • +3

This or wait for the Pixel 9a to drop a bit more?

    • +1

I'd wait for the Pixel 13a

    • +2

      Care to elaborate why?

      • +2

Bad modem so bad battery life, but I don't think it's an issue at this price.

      • -3

you can read all other comments above, I didn't really want to repeat what other pixel owners say, but if people want to hear the same thing 50 times, here goes

in my experience the only thing good about pixels is camera. that's it

I had issues with pixels just randomly losing 5g network, bad battery life (and I am not a heavy user), overheating, slow performance at random

should be enough to give them a skip?

        • Model?
Trials & errors: you've search the internet & tried out MANY-suggested fixes?

          • @ab c: You seriously overestimate how much time someone is going to put into answering another random persons questions.

They've moved on, or they are over it.

          • @ab c: yes, but the biggest problem when I had to switch it in and out of airplane mode to bring back the 5g internet couldn't be fixed and I gave up

I switched to Samsung and problems just don't exist there

why would I keep the phone that needed constant issue fixing..

            • @shabaka: Thanks for sharing & your model was Pixel 8, right?

              • @ab c: 8 pro
                6a before that
also I had 4 or thereabouts few years back

6a was almost ok, best pixel experience I got lol. apart from battery life and low refresh rate screen.

but switched to Samsung and that's it.

                • @shabaka: I've had both and the Samsung is generally better but more bloatware and just a little different to bother me.

I've had the 3,5 and 8 and the only drama for me was with the 5, which would go blank (not off) so you couldn't see the screen frequently when it was vertical. Vertical - when you need to hit 2 for dept. of silly questions, or get the code from an SMS, or check a map…nothing important

But I never had problems with battery on any, even though I know it's a common complaint, and that's when I was unemployed and surfing or playing games all day. I don't understand how or why.

        • Just to add, my Pixel experiences from memory;

Pixel 8a - Significant battery drain, about 3.5-4 hours SoT.. if not for the battery issues I would have kept this one.

Pixel 7 - Poor signal strength, regularly no reception in metro area, significant standby drain, flaky bluetooth, apps crashing ( requiring cache and data clear to fix ), phone heating up even when not actively being used, and many more I forget.

Pixel 2 XL - Charging port broke (known issue), but it didn't have any of the issues that the modern Pixel phones have, I miss this era of Pixel.

For comparison an iPhone 12 with 82% battery health gets me 7-8 hrs SoT with the same usage, in the same locations.

  • Stick with the pixel 8a I am using now then?

    • My daughter has the 8a. It's pretty much equivalent as far as I can see.
