No hidden extras and immediately you do this: $1699 + GST

Display of ex-GST prices to retail customers is in contravention of Trade Practices Amendment (Australian Consumer Law) Act (No. 2) 2010.

    • Spot on yet so many still get it wrong

Anyway sounds like a good offer op but I don’t know much about water heaters and not in NSW

    • +5

Thanks for letting me know, ad has been updated. We charge GST for all our services and products.

      • +14

It's illegal to advertise ex-GST prices to retail customers.

        • +3

          That ad now includes GST

          • @thebeardedplumber: I think you forgot to update the post body as well

            • +15

@Jolakot: Cheers mate, lucky we are better at plumbing than advertising ;)

@thebeardedplumber: This community is spoilt by experienced reps with marketing backgrounds, they're a bit ruthless with expectations

  • +8

It's worth considering switching to heat pump hot water system. The energy savings are significant over time.

    • +1

Oh! I thought the OP posted a heat pump hot water system ? If no then better look for a heat pump based system as it has energy rebates as well.

      • +2

We can help with heat pump based systems but that requires an initial assessment.

    • +1

That can largely been negated if you have a decent solar system. Even with my solar split east / west i only draw supplemental grid energy for hot water on very overcast days and a bit in winter.

      • Correct.
I use a catchpower green to divert excess solar energy to my hotwater cylinder, works incredibly well.

    • does heatpump work with controlled load? I heard that I need to keep it in the always-on line, which costs 3 times more than the off-peak only line.

      • +1

no you wouldnt put a heat pump on control load. but it also uses 1/4 of the power.

        • Heat pumps here in SA go on controlled load (as we have solar sponge - controlled load in the middle of sunny days).

          BUT…

It also come on at night. Heat pumps lose efficiency as it gets colder.
Plus it may just cut out mid cycle, which may not be ideal.
Best setup (without solar) would be an ATR on controlled load.
Easiest is put it on mains.

        • +1

then there's no benefit of heat pump, isn't it? The initial cost is much higher

          • +1

@Averell: Depends on rebate, I got a Hydrotherm X8 installed for $699 back in Dec 2023, with the installer referred to me by Aquatech themselves. 6 years part & labour warranty.

            • @Bigboomboom: Agreed, in Vic, got an Aquatech X8 (same as Hydrotherm) installed for $1400 out of pocket. It uses 2kWh per day to reheat. A resistive element would use far far more.

I've also got a 13kw PV solar system, however on cloudy Melbourne days sometimes it's only producing less than 2kWh. My heatpump draws around 950 watts, which sits well under this, and leaves a bit of headroom for the house. This means I can reheat my hot water fully on solar even on a cloudy day. Trying to do this with a resistive element would either take forever (ramping down) or have to draw on grid power.

Heat pumps should be just as reliable as other heat pumps - fridges and Air cons are the same technology.

              • @placard: Aquatech X8 is a new gen however it has reduced warranty, now 5 years for tank and only 2 years parts & labour for whole system. I got the final batch of Hydrotherm X8 before the rebrand to Aquatech and reduction of warranty, so mine was so cheap. Got a quote then for iStore 270L ~ $2500 back then or $5100 for Sanden 300L. Took the Hydrotherm because it's decent and so much cheaper, and 6 years full warranty was hard to beat at that price.

I use it on solar and OVO free 3 as well. Connect with Tuya so easy to make schedule.

      • My heat pump has been on off peak for 14 years neveer been a problem. I'm in QLD though and a household of 2

  • Do these hot water systems come under NSW energy rebates program ? And if so is that included in the price ?

    • +2

As it's not a heat pump, it doesn't fall under the NSW Energy Rebate Program. This hot water system doesn't fall under the program but other heat pumps hot water units and solar hot water units do fall under the program. We can provide you a quote depending on your requirements.

      • Thanks I will reach out.

  • +1

Dux 250 is about $1100 at Bunnings plus they will install for a cost. Probably cheaper than this deal.

    • The installation cost….I'd be curious to see the price.

      • I did it 9 years ago but cannot remember how much I paid, I doubt it would be over $800 or not by much. Would hardly call your price ridiculous.

        • +2

Probably but prices have likely gone up in 9 years, everything has..

Just watch a few DIY YouTube videos. Plumbing 101 for dummies and electrical work for dummies

      • +3

Its tempting to DIY but its also illegal. No house insurance also if they find it and it is the cause of a fire or water damage

        • +1

I heard tiling is soon becoming illegal in Australia, copying the uk licensing system

          • @Headless: Happy with that so long as we follow their electrical and plumbing model .
Will never happen as the cartels in this country are too strong .

    • +1

You are also getting the old unit removed which has a value too

      • +1

The council will collect them where I am.

  • +1

For comparison, got the Rheem Stellar 250L supplied and installed for $1650.

    • could you post or PM me the contact? I'm also interested in one with a stainless steel core.
      Thanks.

    • Could you please PM me the installer contact too? Thanks runamuck.

  • +3

dux are crap, rheem is the best

    • Our last Vulcan gas storage lasted over 20 years without a service . Had it replaced with a new one but the quality seems far lower ..

    • I bought three of them, and I had all my Dux in a row.

    • +2

Have used Same Day Hot Water in Wollongong earlier in the year for a Rheem instant gas unit , got good service and the price on the website was what I paid.

Based off that can't see where the bargain here is.

      • +2

My family have used them for years, even before they renamed to Same Day Hot Water. Always had good service and pricing.

Last time, my gas hot water gave up on a Friday. Same Day came out to me within 1hr on the Friday afternoon so that we could have hot water over the weekend. The wife was very happy with that since she was not looking forward to no hot water for a weekend

    • Wow, installed prices are much higher than pre COVID.

But yes the company gives great service.

    • I have used them as well!. My mum originally got a quote from another plumber who visited her and quoted for over $1,000 more!!. They said the cost is due to the need to insulate the copper pipes and adding a concrete slab to raise the hot water system off the ground. Same day hot water service did all that in the included price!!!. Transparent prices, no hidden cost, very happy with their service and pricing.

  • Is this cheaper than your regular prices? What is the difference ?

  • +2

Put it on a mains load circuit with a Shelly EM + Hager contactor, and can then have it heat up during cheap electricity times. Add Home Assistant to the mix, and you can heat up with excess PV.

    • I hate the inefficient use of energy like that compared to heat pump systems, but the economics definitely stacks up better if you have alot of excess solar, especially with almost non-existent FiTs now.

      • Heat Pumps have their pros and cons .. and there's so much excess energy around, here in SA prices go negative very often. It needs to be soaked up. I have a resistive HWS that has lasted 20 years (and it hasn't cost me anything to heat it up in the last 4 years). You would chuck out a heat pump at least two times in that same ownership period. I'd call that inefficient and wasteful.

        • Chuck out a heat pump two times in 20 years? Why? Surely only if you bought a crap no-name one that the rebate pushers offer - ie Smart Lifestyle, etc.

A decent mid-tier heat pump should last a fair while, it's the same technology as air con, fridge. When was the last time you chucked out your fridge 3 times in 20 years?

We have a Fujitsu RCAC split system that has been in use since 2009 and no signs of failure yet. Still works as good as the day it was installed. Heavily used for 8-9 months of the year for heating in Melbourne and every few days in summer for cooling. That's 16 years old and I haven't chucked it out twice yet. I'd say it's doing a lot more work too than a heat pump hot water system that only runs for 2-3 hours per day to reheat.

          • @placard: The fact is there are many crap heat pump HWS out there with 2 year warranties (if they are lucky). Unfortunately. they are sold legally. So yeah, so whether we like it or not, this is wasteful. Even mid-tier brands like iStore .. I believe the warranty is 5 years. Not good enough, and they obviously don't stand by the longevity of their product. Sure, we can talk about the quality brands like Sanden and Reclaim, but many people cannot afford to upfront that money even after the subsidies.

            • @noz: I mean looking at the Dux resistive element tank warranty it seem 10 years on the tank, 1 year for parts and labour, so not much different to warranty offered on heat pump. In reality, they last a lot longer than their warranty. I heard from a few installers that despite the warranty length, Aquatech and iStore do stand by their products even after the warranty has expired.

I opted for an Aquatech - decent mid-tier option. I couldn't justify spending extra on a Reclaim but they are a good unit.

              • @placard: I would probably also go Aquatech if I was going to go heat pump HWS. As you said, decent mid-tier, and also HA integration (via Tuya Local / Local Tuya) is one of the main reasons. Good to hear they would still stand by warranty post-expiration.

  • Could you do it for $1499 with hidden extras?
    Can you do a cashie?
    Do you have pensioners/seniors discounts?

    • +1

      You want hidden extras??
