FREE Zinio Magazine Issues for Lots of Australian Public Library Members

510

Heads up to any Canberrans (edit: and most other Aussies) out there: I just discovered (H/T to JF) Libraries ACT (edit: and many other libraries around the country) provide free access to Zinio digital magazine issues. The selection is quite impressive and current, including titles such as:

  • Australian Golf Digest
  • Australian Property Investor
  • Billboard
  • Discover
  • Elle
  • Esquire (US/UK)
  • Filmink
  • Forbes
  • Foreign Policy
  • GQ (AU/UK)
  • Harpers
  • Harvard Business Review
  • Inside Sport
  • Marie Claire (AU/US/UK)
  • Maxim (AU)
  • Men's Health (AU/UK)
  • National Geographic
  • New Scientist
  • NY Review of Books
  • Newsweek
  • OK!
  • Popular Mechanics
  • Popular Photography
  • Smith Journal
  • The Economist
  • Vogue (AU)
  • Women's Health

…as well as unmissable titles such as 'Australian Beading') and a whole bunch of sports/craft/home titles which don't interest me.

A library card number and PIN is needed. No limit on the number of issues you can download (edit: but don't go overboard).

Note that the service provides access to individual issues and not a subscription. You'll need to check the listing periodically (pun intended) for updates. Clicking on a new issue will add it to your Zinio library which will then sync to your device.

The Zinio app works well on my Transformer Prime.

Thanks, public libraries around the country!

Edit: and other libraries too.

Ipswich Library and Mackay Library already do

  • same offer at monash vic libraries!

  • Whoa was goIng to shell out $100s again for a couple of subs! Just happy I didn't see time on that list having paid for a 3 year sub…
Also they do offer free international newspapers daily on some website

    Edit: pressdisplay.com

  • This is also available at Ryde library (Sydney). It's a great initiative from the libraries. :)

    http://library.ryde.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/OPA…

    • …& Randwick City Council Libraries.

I wonder if different libraries belonging to different city councils have different Zinio magazines on offer or if they are just all the same?!?

  • Mona Vale Library (NSW) also available. https://rbdg.envionsoftware.com/pittwatercouncil/zinio/

  • stonnington library too

  • Mod, could the title be changed to a more generic (rather than ACT) listing?

Melbourne Library Service is also a part of this.

    • Ah was so excited to use my Melbourne library membership, but it turns out that they have mostly fashion and gardening mags. Was really hoping for the Economist. Oh well, maybe they'll expand it.

  • No love for Marrickville Council Libraries sadly.

  • You know you don't need to live within the council area.

Just rock up to a library who is part of a council that is offering the service & get a free library membership. Then follow their instructions to sign up to their Zinio library.

Residential restrictions only seem to apply for ebooks and audiobooks through Overdrive (at least for Ryde Council Libraries).

or just visit their website to find a sample library barcode/card number and use that to sign up :)

I wonder if you get different magazines for different Library's? It seems you do. For Monash, here is the list of magazines I got access to:

    http://pastebin.com/z6MiEERb

    • Yep, different mags depending on the library.

  • "Note that the service provides access to individual issues and not a subscription. You'll need to check the listing periodically (pun intended) for updates. Clicking on a new issue will add it to your Zinio library which will then sync to your device."

This is not true in my experience. I've been using via my library for a few months now and always get the latest issue delivered straight to my account, same as a subscription. In fact, there doesn't seem to be anyway to cancel the magazines so I am getting overwhelmed.

P.S. Zinio is well known for cancelling accounts if you abuse their system, so don't overdo it.

  • Wyong Shire NSW also has access.

All I did was google the council name, library and zinio and I found out. eg Wyong Shire Library Zinio

  • and one more…

    Adelaide Hills: http://www.ahc.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=1402

  • confirmed for ALL WA public libraries. Mod, please add to title

  • Are there any good stick mags amongst these?

WA dont have this many mags available, but some free are better than nothing. Thanks OP. ;-D

Which library has this range? Thanks.

  • Libraries are awesome. Magazines are going to go bust if a majority of libraries pick up a subscription with such a wide choice of publications. No love from South Sydney libraries though.

  • awesome. my melbourne library membership finally put to some use.

  • Maroubra NSW have too:
    http://www.randwick.nsw.gov.au/A_sense_of_community/Library/…

time to seek my ancient library card or go get another one…

  • Thanks pibloktoq.
Finally a reason to live in Canberra. Katy should add this as part of the Live in Canberra campaign.

  • cool

  • excellent!

  • Bodacious!

  • Found this out from a friend.. was about to post - wouldn't you know it, its here!.

you can add Warringah Library (NSW) to the list. Also includes (via different service) access to downloadable audio books and ebooks! UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  • The future of libraries are virtual libraries.

    Gotta love the internet.

I was able to sign up for a Melbourne City library membership online and obtain a library card number straight away!

    Link here - http://librarysearch.melbourne.vic.gov.au/opac/JoinWiz.aspx

Have confirmed that I was able to register here for a subscription - https://rbdg.envionsoftware.com/melbourne/zinio/with

    Kudos to poster!!

  • Might have to sign up, looks good.

  • Works for Kingston libraries too. Oh how I now wish Zinio had Choice Magazine!
