Thanks. Already have 2…. But at this price why not make it 3?

    • +3

time for gamesectomy for you my friend!

    • +1

They make great gifts if you have too many

  • Strange my first price was ~$17 and then rapidly escalated?

    • When did the price increase happen? Which page?

      • first click through, i was then denied opening a new account (fair enough) the next click not logged in was $31. Odd.

        • I was able to order for $22 without any promo code, but the delivery address format is incorrect.

Address format: Street name, street number, suburb, postcode, Australia.

I couldn't change the address format. Will I still get the delivery with the above address format?

        • +2

Its because Aliexpress shows you the price with the $15 new user bonus applied. It shows it applied to every price you look at, though youll only get that bonus once. Annoying.

  • +1

Noob question: does this device have an hdmi port and bluetooth?

Use case: plug in to my tv and use ps5 controller to play from the couch.

    • +14

You're asking too much from a $30 product, get a Raspberry Pi, $100 mini-PC we see around here all the time, or $70 Dell Thin Client and you'll be good to go.

    • +7

The Anbernic RG35xx h and bigger RG40xx h handhelds both have mini hdmi out to plug into a tv and Bluetooth support for cable-free controller play for this exact set up that you want.

      • Would the 4:3 480p screen become a problem when you HDMI out?

        • Not sure what you mean by "problem". Take a look at some of the reviews on youtube demonstrating using these devices as a standard gaming console by connecting them to a big TV and blue tooth controllers.

          • @PoorFromOzBargains: Oh nice. So it doesn't mirror the screen like the shitty implementations of HDMI out back in 2018. That's good.

      • That’s cool. I had no idea they could give you a switch style experience.

    • +2

You're better off getting those n150 devices (or a 11th gen laptop). It's not that retro handhelds won't work, it's just that their processing will limit you to 480 to 720p. By the time you can upscale to 1080p reliably, you can afford a n150 PC.

    • Your phone could do that

      • +1

        *some phones can.

Usb3.1 is not on all phones, and some vendors, like Google until recently, disabled display out via USB.

    • +3

If you want to play retro games from the couch consider just running Batocera on a PC from a USB stick. Don't forget to turn on latency reducing features like run-ahead and pre-emptive frames. It's a better solution:

    • +1

Dont over think these, just pick it up and play.
Great for the price (up to $40).

  • +1

Thanks OP, this look pretty cool. Picked up one for myself and my niece.

    • +2

I can confirm that these are really cool. Moreso on the nostalgia than the game play.

      • +2

Moreso on the nostalgia than the game play.

Yeah, I both agree and disagree - I think the experience for 8-bit and 16-bit era games is quite good because the small screen makes the visuals look quite decent.

However, there's quite noticeable input lag which makes precise inputs difficult (which is super important for 8-bit and 16-bit era games).

It's pretty decent for playing turn-based games, perfect for playing GB / GBC / GBA era Pokemon games, for example. I've had a blast replaying Crystal, Emerald and Fire Red.

        • +1

I can't get my progress to save on Pokemon Crystal. Used the in game saving, then tried the save states on the console. Nothing stays saved if the device turns off.
Am I supposed to just leave it on all the time if I want to play?

        • +2

The cheap handhelds like this one don't allow you to turn latency reducing features like run-ahead and pre-emptive frames on without slowing down the game. The controls and screens don't help either.

However other handhelds do allow these features to be turned on.

  • Is this the correct address format in AliExpress?

Street name, street number, suburb, postcode, Australia.

    • I always use the google map address. It's easier for the delivery driver to locate as well.

I've read on the r36s wiki that this site/store is selling the clone variant.

Not sure if it will alter anyone's buying perspective, but it might help if someone's nit picky about it.

As noted, clone variants are not able to run certain OS's.

    https://handhelds.wiki/R36S_Buying_Guide

    • Good catch, I only very briefly skimmed the reviews. I see at least one top review now that says they got a genuine one and a clone.

Unfortunately none of the trusted stores currently have any similar deals.

      • I got a clone last deal. Was able to get a partial refund and keep or return and full refund.
I took a partial refund and kept it.

    • +1

Man, these super budget devices are getting super hard to track lol

  • +1

    Cheap case for it.
    https://ebay.us/m/8KXHHc
Any videos on how to use all the buttons on the device?

  • do these emulate lcd games? eg casio western bar, game and watch, tiger…

    • +2

Do yourself a favour and check out https://itizso.itch.io/retrofab on your phone, amazingly realistic recreations in a browser window which you can fullscreen. Even has haptic feedback when pressing the buttons.

    • Good luck finding one for under triple digits my friend.

  • +7

These consoles are awesome! Just a reminder for anyone new to these that you ideally need to replace the SD card that they come with as they are cheap and prone to failure. Few guides that might be helpful in understanding what is recommended for these:
    - https://retrohandheldguides.com/r36s-starter-guide/#google_v…
    Happy gaming!

  • Are those buttons comfortable to play? I would imagine you need a fight stick to play these arcade games.

  • Nice! Thanks for sharing the pirated roms op

  • +1

Thx could this run game and watch roms?

    • +1

I was wondering the same and found this reddit thread a few days ago https://www.reddit.com/r/R36S/comments/1h6nl5z/has_anybody_t…

    • +2

Also… if you havent already seen it, Retrofab is absolutely amazing on a phone.

      https://itizso.itch.io/retrofab

The games just run in a browser window but are incredibly realistic.

      • Thanks I recently went to the Nintendo museum and was hit by a wave of nostalgia. I’d love to get some sort of emulator that’s already in game and watch form preloaded even better not sure if it exists.

        • Retrofab will blow your mind (it is free and has most of the Game & Watch games that I'm aware of and a bunch more), the only downside is you have to load each game individually from the website each time you want to play. But they are quick to load. There is a standalone version for windows but it doesnt have as many games.
The sound and graphics are usually spot on, and it is full 3D so you can rotate the game and check out the casing etc, plus the boxes and manual in a lot of the games. Also has haptic feedback on a phone when you press the buttons. Works best for single screen LCD games IMHO.

I'm a big fan of Octopus on Retrofab (I had it as a kid).
          https://itizso.itch.io/nintendo-octopus

Make sure to rotate your phone to landscape and fullscreen the app with the expand icon on the app itself.

        • +1

Turns out there is now a new enhanced version for phones https://itizso.itch.io/pocketfab

Although it's only an early release so missing a lot of games, it also loses a bit of nostalgia as doesnt have the original casings for the games.

  • Perfect timing! Was just about to buy RG40xx h as a gift for my overseas friend for ~$80 but this one will do perfectly :)

  • +9

Before you buy, please read through the R36s Wiki.

This store doesn't seem to be on the list of authentic sellers. Boyhom is the way to go.

You will also need to get rid of the included OS sd card as well as the game sd card. they are cheap af and are prone to causing crashes. Just remember to keep a backup of the OS sd card and copy everything over to a new brand name sd card.

The included roms are ok, but they can be jankie. Some have all cheat enabled and some might not be in English. Best to use your own roms ;)

Follow this guide when setting up and you won't go wrong.

    • Yep was about to say, spend a few dollars extra and get it from the store listed on the wiki to reduce chance of getting clones..

  • +2

Thinking of getting one of these for my 14mth old daughter as a bit of a distraction on a few long haul flights we have coming up. I know she won't be able to play it properly but she'll be able to as she grows up. I kind of prefer these over a phone or an ipad.

    • +1

That is actualllllly not a bad idea!!!! We've got a flight to italy in November with our 2.5 year old. Historically we've tried a lot to just keep him calm and at peace on flights, but it's gotten harder and harder. I dont mind this idea. I wonder if there are any realllly basic and simple toddler games on them?

  • +8

If you've ordered one. While your waiting for delivery, do yourself a favour and buy a good quality micro SD and follow these instructions once you've received the device.

    https://youtu.be/yiOcVitDhoE?si=V16echHd00IElG2T

The card that comes with it is just slow, terrible and doesn't load the os half the time. And after a few hours of use it stops working. Very common issue and the above steps take less than 15 minutes to have much better playing experience.

    • Why not just copy it all to a new card instead of fresh install

      • The new micro SD needs partitions in a particular way before copying the files over. Also there's a different version of the os that works much better

    • Thanks for linking this, I just bought this unit naively without researching and thinking it could fail at some stage. I would have had no idea.

      • Tbh even at this price a few months of use is great. But yea a quick google search will find that the SD card is a major weakness. I guess they need to find ways to keep the cost this low.

  • It's strange when following the link it only takes me to the app homepage. When I search for the product and store to find it, it then tells me it can't ship to Australia?? Anyone else getting this?

  • It says expired, but I just bought the purple color version through the app for $20.54 by simply entering the coupon code above.
From what I understand, the price should have been higher or am I missing something?

  • I bought two. Will use these for kids birthday presents.

  • new to this - but does this come with installed games or do i need to do it on my own?

      • Yea did buy it. Lets see

    • +1

It comes with thousands of roms (games) preinstalled and is ready to just pick up and play, however, i prefer to then go download the roms that i want myself and organise it neatly my way, as you'll get many duplicates preinstalled and sometimes with strange naming standards or they're organised in a way that I don't like.

  • If using coins, make sure to go via the coin bonus section of the app for a larger percentage off. I'm getting US$17.34 delivered

  • For those who prefer the newer horizontal form factor of this same device, the R36H variant is roughly AU$36.57 (that's the new customer price, otherwise it's showing as $44.74 for existing customers). Each colour is priced slightly differently.

  • I love my r36s, but I would suggest a model that has a built in wifi adaptor, Bluetooth support and HDMI out so you can use it as a tv console out of the box and get over the air updates for the OS.
If you don't care about any of that, the r36s is incredible for the price.

    • Which cheap models have all the features you mentioned?

      • Something like the ambernic rg35xx h is like $80ish on sale and has all those features and more polish, for example.

      • didn’t actually ask because it had to be cheap, but thanks for the answer. Would it be more correct to ask: ‘Which models have this features ?

  • Mine arrived today.
    It’s a clone. G80D-MD board.
I had to copy the original dts off the SD card and load a fork of ArcOS (for K36s) to get it working.
So far not bad. Buttons are firmer than the legit one, but other than that it works well and happy at the price paid.

  • Mine also arrived today. RK3326 EVB-based clone.

Done a image of the SD card and I'll go down the route of using a fresh ArkOS fork.

    FDT /rf3536k3ka.dtb

    • If you have a clear case you can see the model printed on the mainboard under the battery.
I popped my case open and looked.

I raised it with AliExpress and they offered free return and full refund no questions asked. But I’ll keep mine.

      • Yeah, i'll keep mine too. It's fine for the price I think as long as you have a bit of technical know how to get it to a more reliable SD card it's probably fine.

I used this fork, but kept the original dtb from the included SD card.

        https://github.com/AeolusUX/ArkOS-K36/releases

I also wonder how many SD card will die after a month or two and it all becomes ewaste.

        • O. I always throw away the SD card when I open the box.
Not worth the risk of loosing a 80% completed save. :)

      • Not sure if you seen this, but it would be interesting to get some ports running on it.

        https://portmaster.games/games.html

    • Did you find the latest ArkOS image?

  • Mine arrived today. I got the grey transparent one and I'm not sure if it is a clone or not. Going through the wiki (thanks to deebee8), it has two ram chips, the letters on the button looks legit, the D pad looks like original, it doesn't turn on when microsd is removed, has the arkos loading screen, however when charging it displays the battery symbol (which suggest it is a clone). I'll need to check the dtb file when I get home. Apart from that, it works well.
