As always I recommend paying in USD, as that's the currency AliExpress trade in and their AU rate will fluctuate. How to get the best rates is explained further below. If you complain that the code is "not working" remember that I have said it's not a sitewide sale. There's no need to spam my PMs again.

Min spend excludes GST and shipping. Limit 1 coupon per account. Cannot be combined with the Welcome Offer for new users, used to purchase phones, or applied to some Big Save limited offers.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA

  • Last time I ordered a few things, they all arrived in one package

    But one item was missing

    It’s worth $1.5

And Aliexpress is giving me hell, to somehow provide proof the item is missing

    If this was a $100 item… man

    This would have sucked balls

      • Meanwhile my account is eligible for 5 free returns a month. Maybe it's because of the dirt cheap AliExpress Saver membership that gives you live chat, phone support and coupons.

        • Oh I was tempted by the aliexpress saver membership, have you seen any good "exclusive prices" and do the coupons stack with these ones?

          • +1

@frogduck: I'm still under the old VIP membership that's been superseded by this so I can't see all the benefits of the new program. It gave me mostly coupons which are pretty similar to this, but no exclusive pricing that I can see. Mainly it's been useful for getting the instant returns + live chat or phone support.

Hopefully someone with Saver can chime in and see if they get the same.

            • @Clear: Ah I think I am on the same/similar as you for now (VIP). Yes will be good to see if anyone is on the new subscription!

              • @frogduck: Do you get any US$1 off US$1.01 or similar coupons currently?

                • @Clear: I used to but not recently, maybe haven't been spending enough!

  • +3

Becareful, always check before payment, because Aliexpress sometime charge you more than 10% for GST.

    • What can we do to avoid that? Switch to the same item from a different seller?

      • +1

I have no ideas, maybe that could work, but some of the seller are dodgy, they give you lower prices, then charge you higher Tax (GST).

    • +2

Yes, they often charge 17.5% GST to Australians.

  • +1

You will learn the hard way that Aliexpress has become unrepeatable. They asked me for an "unboxing video".
To better handle your complaint regarding quality issues, please provide the following evidence to assist us in determining the actual situation:
    1. Postal service proof/logistics documentation confirming abnormalities with the package. The document must include the following details:
·Package tracking number: The tracking number should match the one provided by the seller.
·Logistics status: The content on the document must reflect the issue you encountered, such as descriptions of missing items, damage, etc.
·Issuer of the document: The email address should originate from the logistics company. For offline documents (such as photos or PDF files), they must come from the corresponding logistics company—for example, bearing the official seal or signature of the logistics company.
    2. A complete unboxing video showing that the problem existed upon receipt of the item. The video must include:
    ·The package label clearly visible.
·A full view of the intact, unopened package.
·If there are two layers of labels, the bottom label underneath must be shown after removing the top layer.
    ·The recording time.
·A detailed and clear recording of the specific issue, ensuring smooth playback without lagging, frame dropping, or editing.
    3. Communication records with the seller (e.g., messages where the seller admits fault or promises a refund).

    • +5

Sellers get into this situation due to buyers doing doddgy shit, and everyone else suffer.

      • +3

They went from one extreme to another

Problem is that people working at AliExpress are human bots. Governed by their textbooks and can’t make decision on their own

End result is poor user experience

    • +3

How is a customer going to know there is an issue with the product and start recording as they unbox?

Are they expecting their customers to start recording every time they open a package?

If a customer intends to deceive, it's just as easy to carefully open the package and then reseal, can be difficult to tell from a video.

So demanding an unboxing video makes no sense.

      • +4

I ordered an underwater light from AliExpress. When the package arrived, it was a very thin and light padded envelope, and it was obvious it was empty, so I filmed the opening of the package. As expected, there was nothing inside, and I lodged a claim with AliExpress. They rejected the claim because the tracking showed it was delivered. We went back and forth before I threatened a credit card chargeback and they finally processed the refund.

        • +4

I had a somewhat similar experience with purchasing a couple of mini PCs - both were "Choice" items (meaning that they're shipped by AliExpress for those unaware)

What I actually got was a package containing a heap of low value items that someone else had ordered.

I got a refund on one of the PCs easily enough but they refused to refund the 2nd PC because I hadn't returned it - I never received it in the first place and they obviously received the items that I sent back because they provided a refund for the other computer.

Despite going back and forth and around in circles many times with their customer service and even after threatening a chargeback, they still kept wasting my time.

The chargeback went through successfully in the end - the bank didn't even ask for any actual evidence - only said that they'd ask for it if the merchant fought the chargeback. I was expecting AliExpress to ban my account as others had reported that happening to them but it didn't happen in my case - I'm guessing that they finally looked at the case and realised that they were in the wrong. No apology from them in the end.

I've spent over $10k with AliExpress over the last 11 years. They're just morons to lose a customer over such a relatively small amount when it's obvious that they've made a mistake.

At the very least, AliExpress should be video recording the packaging of choice items so that they can check for themselves whether the right items were actually sent - would be a pretty simple thing for them to be doing and save a lot of grief for everyone when things go wrong.

          • +2

@OnTheMark: It should be pretty simple to ask them to produce evidence in video of the packaging process with all items laid out, and shipping labels etc. If they expect that the customer should reasonably assume they will be provided wrong or damaged goods, and that they should be videotaping all unboxings, then they should be able to provide the same evidence on their end of the same process.

            • @HiredGoon: Where does it end? They can easily print a second label and stick it on a different package.

Even if they video the distribution centre the package can be swapped out. Do they then live stream the entire journey door-to-door?

Bottom line is some trust should be there, the cost of doing business.

              • @browser: Exactly. To be clear, I'm not suggesting people should have to video boxings or unboxings. There should be some trust and common sense there. It just smacks of hypocrisy, if they are asking you as a customer to supply video evidence, when they are unwilling or unable to provide the same themselves.

For myself, I haven't had this trouble. I did get a partial refund, which I ended up accepting, for a 12V USB outlet when they sent the wrong model.

It's not Choice that you should be looking at. Store names and feedback. Shopxxxxxxxxx and <95% or less feedback are red flags. Especially if they're a new store, which can be checked on the store page.

If the price is too good to be true and it's a new store, low feedback and/or generic name it's pretty obvious you're about to be scammed.

Of course that's not always the case. Just red flags to be mindful of.

            • -1

@Clear: Are you saying that Choice items aren't shipped from AliExpress warehouses?

In my case, I don't think that it was a scam - just human error.

              • @OnTheMark: Yeah they changed Choice a bit that it now allows sellers to keep the inventory and they ship it off to a Cainiao (Alibaba) distribution warehouse where it gets sent onwards to you. Resulting in the much quicker delivery time that Choice promises.

As opposed to sending it through China Post's distribution network where it'll be slower.

                • -1

@Clear: Interesting - so the speed up is from AliExpress using a different shipping method to China Post.

In my case, the computers were from different well established sellers - one of them currently has 97.8% feedback and IIRC has had several of their systems listed on OzBargain deals.

Although it's possible that the different sellers were actually one and the same and they did intentionally try to scam me, I think that a better explanation is a simple mix up in the distribution centre.

It's impossible to totally prevent scams but if the process in the distribution centre was video recorded, it would at least make it easy for AliExpress to confirm whether a human mistake was made at that point during the shipping process.

I don't think that it's reasonable for AliExpress to expect every customer to video record the unboxing of all of their packages when they're not recording at least the consolidation step themselves.

                  • @OnTheMark:

Interesting - so the speed up is from AliExpress using a different shipping method to China Post.

Correct. With Alibaba owning Cainiao logistics it speeds up the whole process. We can thank COVID for that when China Post/Singapore Post packages piled up at airports for months with no tracking. AliExpress enforce tracking as a requirement and make Cainiao super affordable.

Although it's possible that the different sellers were actually one and the same and they did intentionally try to scam me, I think that a better explanation is a simple mix up in the distribution centre.

Go to the store page, click on the store name and then business license. It'll give you the registration details of the business and they may be the same. Definitely possible for a mix up to happen and has happened to me before.

Video recording packages being opened sucks and I guess they've been scammed enough for them to enforce it. My little trick is to open the package from the opposite end of the label. That way if there is an issue I can do a pretend opening from the front near the label.

                    • +2

                      @Clear:

First thing paranoid me does when recording is show the camera all side of the package to show it hasn't been opened yet.

                      • @PainToad: There's an idea. Video 1 shows it unopened then follow my method for video 2.

Showing different business details when I do that. I'm not sure if that's definitely a guarantee that they really are different though.

                      • @OnTheMark: They can still use different names. You never know which stores are connected. Otherwise human error.

          • @OnTheMark: This describes almost exactly what happened with me 8 months ago. Ordered a few Miyoo Mini gaming devices for the kids, received one, 2 missing, along with a bunch of cheap landfill addressed to some guy in Slovakia.

Got the refund for one of the missing devices but they pulled the same stunt with not refunding the other one, the back and forth went on for days. Chargeback via PayPal, included full chat history, PayPal requested essentially a Stat Dec (submit complaint to a government authority and provide them with a copy showing government letterhead) which I did (WA Dept Industry Regulation) and won the chargeback.

My AliExpress account is still in good standing. Must be plenty of people that don't bother or they wouldn't try it on. Anyway I still happily use them and they are fine for the most part but everything I open gets recorded no matter how small.

      • I ordered a glass jar and there was zero protection for it. Came smashed up and I didn't think to "record my unboxing", but I just submitted a video of me "opening" the package and showing it was smashed to bits. Got a refund. Still, annoying AF.

    • Yep zero returns approved anymore even if damaged in arrival, the good old days are over.

    • I always record opening packages. Except for Amazon who seem to not give a shit.

    • Buy only on paypal. I was refused a refund for something that was a valid claim and just claimed on paypal. Electrical issue that was difficult to show on video. Problem solved and they dare not do it again. Otherwise aliexpress had been ok for me. Their short returns and warranty period cannot be excluded from Australian consumer laws.

    • Wrong - I mean it use to be hit n miss but that was Years ago. I use AliExpress like twice and week and have Great success.

Fix title please. Your pricing tiers are referring to USD. Either change to AUD rough equivalent or add USD.

    • +2

      $2 off $19, $5 off $39, $7 off $59, $10 off $79, $20 off $169, $30 off $249, $40 off $359 (in USD)

This is the title format alvian had changed my titles to previously to fit all the discounts and as you've suggested it has USD if you read the full title. If the mods don't want it to be like this anymore they can change it.

      • -3

I see… Fair enough. My bad. Didn't know the default currency we used in AUS bargain was USD. Imagine going into Coles and everything was labeled in USD. Oh but we printed USD so it's ok.

        • +2

Title limits suck. If I put US$ in front of all the discounts I don't have room to fit them all in. Then I get complaints for not including them all in 😅

AliExpress isn't an Australian website. They trade in USD and if you read the bottom of any of my AliExpress deals I explain how to achieve the proper exchange rate and not overly inflated rates. This is a deal website after all.

There's even a massive maintained wiki page on OzBargain just for currency conversion free cards.

          • -3

@Clear: Then list AUD equivalent amounts. No need to say 'USD' at all?

Anyway. It was my bad for not reading the full title. Thanks for posting!

            • +5

@hippo2s: AliExpress trade in USD. As I've said, the AUD rate on AliExpress fluctuates and the USD rate does not. If I'm going to put grossly inflated AUD rates in then I'll have to update the deal multiple times a day as it adjusts.

Many who've been around here for a while should know by now how to do currency conversions properly. If you haven't had to before here's a super useful wiki page so you can see if your card has no international transaction fees.

@Clear: If you listed in AUD, you'd get people complaining that they got a $12.03 discount instead of the $12.05 you listed.

        • Well, Coles is an Aussie business trading locally, so it shows AUD prices. AliExpress is a foreign company trading in USD.

There are approximate AUD equivalents in the body of the post.

Stop gaslighting and just admit you were wrong.

Crap. I actually didn't know that.

  • It seems they give this discount so we can offset the import taxes, is there a limit that we dont get to pay import tax when buying from overseas?

    • They won't slap on the stuffed GST amount if it's over $1000 or AU stock (i.e. some Reolink listings).

  • +4

This whole GST thing is a con, it gives a legitimate reason to overseas platforms to charge more, without a mechanism to enforce them to accurately report and payback the GST they have collected.

Many of them don't issue tax invoices, many don't even have an ABN but an ARN, which is not eligible to be reported to claim GST credits.

Essentially they keep GST as extra profit.

    • +3

ARNs are eligible for claiming GST credits. From your AliExpress order details (at least on the app) you can have the invoice with their ARN (AliExpress refers to it as platform GST number) emailed to you. Use that and the PayPal receipt etc. as evidence.

Is temu service any better? Just seeing to go with AE or Temu

    • +3

Different product range for sure, but you can't beat Temu's customer service. They'll let you do a few 'no questions asked' refunds with no returns.

Edit: Also worth mentioning they have a form of price protection. Check your order periodically and for a month or so there's a price adjustment button. If it goes cheaper after you bought it, you can get the difference refunded as Temu store credit.

Ethically it's not something I exploit and only use it for genuine issues. Why? Because Temu punishes sellers with a fine for refunds and it's like 200%+ of the price you paid. Putting the store out of pocket for the product they sold, covering your refund and Temu's cut.
