Looks like a good deal for $385.15.

Has anyone got a better 4TB gaming ssd price before?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/900954

You could get it around 300 before.

      • +13

        How is $369.85 "around 300"?

If anything, it's closer to $426.75 than it is to $300.

And yes it was at 300, my brother ordered at that price and I ordered at 332 because I can't be arsed to go through chat to get another 10% off voucher.

Plenty of other people bought it at 300.

        • math is hard.

        • its marshmallow logic, even if its $399, it starts with 3 hence $300.

This drive has been $370 in April from Samsung.

You can get the Lexar nm790 for $355 atm. From what I've gathered, I think nm790 has better sustained write speed, power efficiency/runs cooler and has better durability rating, but the 990 Pro is better in other ways eg has dram and better random reads and writes.

Not that it matters for the vast majority of users, who primarily only read from their SSDs, but I don't think this is true.

If you really need a high performance SSD, the 990 Pro is significantly better, onboard DRAM will have a significant impact, as will the higher IOPS in actual real-world performance. The durability ratings are broadly nonsense and not actually worth anything.

If you don't really need a high performance SSD, then basically every drive is almost the same.

          https://www.techpowerup.com/review/samsung-990-pro-2-tb/6.ht…

These are for the 2tb versions so may differ a bit for the 4tb.

You're right about the sustained write for the whole drive, the 990 pro is faster but upto 1.3tb the nm790 has it beat.

The efficiency and temps may be important if someone plans to use it on a laptop.

Not arguing the nm790 is better, for my use case I feel the 990 pro is since it keeps some options open. The better random reads/writes will make for a better OS drive if I choose to use it that way and it'll work better with an enclosure if I choose to use it that way down the track also.

It might be a big deal for some people, but samsung has an actual SLC cache. Which is very rare nowadays, on an nvme ssd

So unlike ssds that only have pslc cache, they dont run out completely as you fill the ssd

        • Thanks for sharing. I was not aware but good to know another beneficial feature.

    • I bought this (4TB 990 pro) for $299.59 during a secret sale. It was posted on ozbargain with a bunch of other items. Can't find the post but the date was Apr 9, 2025

Not sure if this is confirmation bias but we've had a few 990s at work die. Could be resolved with newer firmware.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/1h2gx5t/is_the_is…

    • Even with the firmware updates it's not fully fixed. Always a risk to these drives.

    • I'm hoping the June firmware update will fix any issues

      NVMe SSD-990 PRO Series Firmware
      ISO 6B2QJXD7 | 50MB
      Download

*(6B2QJXD7) To address the intermittent non-recognition and blue screen issue. (Release: June 2025)

Btw, what do you mean by die? was it the bsod or non-recognition?

I might be mistaken because it was a long time ago that I read about it but I thought the problem with these drivers caused severely fast degradation of the controller, meaning if the controller dies the whole drive is dead.

Someone can correct me if I'm misremembering.

        • I've read that was an issue shortly after release, but more recently from that redditpost above, there appears to be an issue with the drive going missing or bsod isssues.

It's odd because some people have reported being able to use it for years and some people experience persistent problems even with their RMA replacements.

Hard to say what is going on.

          • @Notatightass: Personally, I would steer clear of this drive and the p41 platinum. Not sure if there is a firmware fix for the p41 but when there are trouble free options available for the same price why bother.
If you need a fast drive I would choose an sn850x

            • +1

@DeToxin: The sn850x does seem to be the least troublesome but at the time I was looking to buy, it was around $520 from Amazon.

Just my experience, but I bought the P41 2 years ago. By the time I found out about the slow write speeds, the firmware fix was already out. After updating I haven't noticed any issues. I recently transferred a total of 1.3tb of data from 2 different drives to the P41 and the speeds were as expected.

              • +1

@Notatightass: Nice, good to hear sk hynix's fw update resolved it. Feel like I've been hearing about the 990 for a year or so now

                • @DeToxin: Lol, tbh I've been hearing about issues with the 990 pro since release and was going to just wait for the sn850x to get a bit cheaper. But after noticing they updated the firmware to fix the bsod and non recognition, I felt it was worth the gamble.

  • Shame the price of SSD's has been going up. A good alternative to this is the NM790 4TB. I got one as it's bit cheaper and still great performance. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

from what i remember, 990s have always been ticking timebombs, no idea if it has been fixed by samsung

    • Is it the same problem as the 870s back in the day? Those drives were also ticking time bombs with the cell charge degrading over time and needed to be rewritten every now and then potentially consuming write cycles.

is this suitable for the PS5, are the "Heat Sink Variant" better for ps5

    • was thinking the same. always juggling space on the PS5

    • You need one with a heat sink for ps5 or it’ll be throttled

    • You could just buy the non heatsink variant and buy the heatsink seperately from somewhere amazon for less than $10. I did that with a different drive I use in the PS5.

If you purchase the heasink version and decide to remove it later on for a different use case, then it will void warranty.

  • Why from my place, its only down 20% to $475.62, while yours is $426.75?
