Powershop Electricity Bill - Estimated Vs Actual Reads

Hi all, currently with Powershop in NSW and have been since May. My last 2 bills (June and July) have had super lower electricity usage (approximately ~ 30kWH for the month) vs 480KWH in May.

I assume this is to do with estimated meter reads vs. actual reads.

My question is now that the prices have increased will I get hit with a corrected bill which is at the new higher rates ? Is this all written into the T&C of the contract ?

You don't need to assume, it states on the bill whether it's estimate or actual meter reading.

You will be charged at the new rates.

    • The past usage was under-estimated and should be corrected and billed at the rates applicable that that time.
The new rates apply to usage from the effective date.
      They are not retrospective

      • There's no way now to determine whether the usage was before or after the rate change, unless they have a digital meter, in which case there wouldn't be an estimate bill in the first place.

OP should have provided a manual reading if they wanted some bill surety. They might be able to still do so.

  • Oh okay. Is there any way to prevent this ? Have never had this issue with AGL/EA. Seems somewhat unfair that energy used in a previous period where rates were lower will get charged at a higher rate.

    • Yes, it is unfair (unless it goes the other way). Contact Powershop and let them know what your real usage was. Should get an amended bill.

You can enter a manual reading in the app. Although it may be too late already.

    • It's probably because you have just switched and they didn't have any data to base an estimate off.
Most providers do allow you to submit a manual meter read. AGL seems to revise the amount due immediately but some providers will not correct it until the next bill so ideally you want to submit it before the bill is issued.
A smart meter would also avoid all these issues but obviously that's out of your control, they will replace it when they see fit.

  • some providers also lets you submit manual readings

  • I thought the next proper reading saw the balance (of the units used in reality) adjusted, So basically do nothing.Unless there was a massive dividend differences in the rates at the change to higher rates.Otherwise do the maths , make a case and get an adjustment.

  • I submit my own meter reads weekly. Also purchase Powerpacks eg pay $30 but get $37 value. Sure PS get my money earlier but a saving is a saving.
