Cheaper Oakley / Ray Ban Glasses

Years ago when Big W had optical, you could get Ray Ban and Oakley glasses for the same price as glasses at Specsavers (2 for $250)

I feel like with them gone, you can't get them on the cheap anymore. Luxottica has a monoploy and only give them to OPSM (who they own) or smaller shops.

Anyone know of any shops around Sydney who do Oakley or Ray Ban's for $100-$150?

  • If an option just forget the brand and pick something up that looks similar enough?

  • The Ray Ban's i see reduced in price are usually the non-polarised ones. Polarised ones are harder to find at a reduced price. Are you referring to polarised or non-polarised?

    • Optical ones, so getting lenses put in (not sunglasses). I've just found that these 2 brands sit the most comfortable with me. So many others pinch or aren't wide enough.

Why would you still want to support a company that acts as a vertically integrated near monopoly to sell <$5 plastic for hundreds of dollars? There are other options out there.

    • I detest Luxottica for what they did via their threats to stop selling Oakley through their retail channel. Aeguably, this forced Jim Jenner to sell the company he'd built from scratch.

I bought my last pair of Oakleys from VisionDirect online, you just need to upload your script and PD, I think they might have come from Hong Kong.

They cost me $266 three years ago, with the top tier thin lenses (1.74 index). Were $296 but they had a $30 discount code. Same pair now with the basic lens (1.5 index) are $194, and there is a $20 welcome discount code, CASH20AU, which would bring it down to $174, close enough? They also sell Ray-Ban specs.

  • The cost price for Oakley is about $100 and Rayban $70. Realistically, you won't get a current model for $100-150 range, but many stores sell discontinue or older stock for cheaper.

  • Is your local optometrist willing to put lenses into a frame you supply? Mine did (before I had refractive eye surgery). I doubt you'll get a pair of oakleys/ray bans with prescription lenses for that price anymore, you can often get the frames (with lenses that you'll discard anyway) for ~$150-180 during their black friday or click frenzy sales where everything is 20% off, then paired with shopback/topcashback/cashrewards boosted (last time it was ~17%) cashback. My last pair of sutro sunglasses (27/4/25) were $184, with $33 cashback that's $151. Shopback only had one day boosted cashback, but it happened like twice during the oakley sale, so you do need to time things a bit. But this is ozbargain and we're professionals(tm).
Before anybody asks why I'd support a giant multinational that would do poor Jim Jannard dirty like that, well Oakley (and now Rayban does too, thanks to their Luxotica overlords) do "low nose bridge" variants of their frames that fit my flat-ass nose. They used to be called Asian variant or Asian Nose Bridge, but now that's not PC or something? Anyway I am all for these new Korean glasses manufacturers as they understand my "next to no nose(bridge)" situation, but there's no local shops (yet?) for me to try out and Oakley does. Also they don't do wraparound lenses which is the main reason I wear sunnies (to stop my eyes drying out when screaming down Mt Cootha at 70kph). For now.
