HP Omen 2023 - Seeking Advice ($1999)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Hey OzBargain crew – long-time lurker, first-time poster.
Looking at the HP Omen 16 (2023) – i7-13700HX / RTX 4060 / 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD / 16" – for $1,999:

Mainly for CAD work + business use, with some light gaming. Battery life matters as I travel a bit.
Specs look good, but with so many options out now, I’m wondering if it's risky going with a 2023 model in late 2025?

Also considering spending more on a Lenovo Legion (maybe RTX 4070) if it’s worth it long-term.

Would love any thoughts—especially around battery, performance, and whether the Omen is still decent value.

Cheers!

  • No no no, for cad you need better display

    • Will probs use external display most of the time. I just thought the specs were fairly future proofed.

Nah. They r not. Its expensive for the specs

    Get macbook pro m3 pro

Only use windows software. Thanks though

  • Not a good deal to be honest

    • Ok thanks. What would you recommend at similar price point?

Buy a MacBook Pro instead. Heaps better in every aspect.

      MAC OS drives me nuts

Macs are simple and easy to use.

They never said it was too complex.

That's an awful price. Last gen midrange GPU for $2000 and 13th Gen Intel.
You can get a current gen Legion (which also has much better build) quality for ~$50 more if you have access to edu store

    • Alternatively this Intel Core 7-240H, RTX 5060 Alienware is $2000. Though I'd consider the above Lenovo deal to be much better.

Thanks again. I just read the comments on Alienware with sledging the battery etc. maybe I grab the Alienware and pop a new stick of ram in it. Thanks!

        • Another alternative is to check the Lenovo outlet.
Currently, there is no Legion laptops but you can periodically check the site if they add a Legion laptop to fall within your budget.
I would recommend waiting for something with an RTX 4070/RTX 5060 or better.
Don't bother with RTX 4050, 4060 or 5050 laptops considering your budget

    • Thanks. The legions seem to have good reviews. I don’t have access to edu. Lenovo gave me a deal for $2587 with 1tb SSD + 32GB Ram which I am considering. Wondering if the 16” screen might be better for CAD work on the go…

For CAD work; do you really need a lappy? Why not a desktop ? Theyre gonna be a little beefier

Im not sure the difference between like the 'RTX 40 ' regular series cards; where their primarily aimed at gamers vs their 'ada' branded cards that are targeted more at professional use

    • Yeh I need a lappy as I work in different locations. I’m thinking I try to stretch to the legion or wait a couple weeks for further discounts…

      • Id check whether your employer can get any discounts through any programs. Sometimes they have codes etc. Ive always personally brough lenovo laptops. Currently have a Yoga 9i, and cant say I have complaints. Other then maybe the battery life; but youre gonna get poor battery with any 'beefy' specced laptop.

  • gaming laptops are a niche thing and starting to become very expensive for what they are.

by lite gaming, do you really need an RTX GPU? what sort of lite gaming are you doing?

    • yeh its pretty wild how much you can pay if you want to push the limits… I don't really game too much these days however would like the option to play AAA games if I somehow find the time lol. Generally buy older games on steam etc.

Unless any better deals come up this week I think Ill go with the Aurora 16 for $1737 on the gaming dealz page and call it a day. It seems good value. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Below linked a couple of options, i know its HN site but i use them as a base for reference when helping others look for tech stuff that are no way tech savvy.
i dont know the specs of the aurora that you have mentioned but hopefully this will give you a better view OR confuse you mroe on what to purchase.

i have an acer nitro with a RTX 4050 and plays everything very well, too well infact. but battery life isnt its forte so i sue a INUI 140w lappy charger with an adapter from USB c to acer so its got a fighting chance when out and about.
