Does KFC Use Different Chicken in Each Location?

There's this one KFC we go to which consistently has bigger pieces and better chicken than our local.

It has got my whole family wondering whether it's actually up to the owner of the KFC franchise what kind of chicken they buy. The local ones have really tiny drumsticks and wings while the one we go to, you consistently has good big pieces of chicken.

Does the KFC operator actually select what chicken to buy?

If KFC uses the same chicken in each location, I can think of 2 possibilities:

          1. They've been cloning the same chicken all along, or
          2. They harvest portions from a mutant mega chicken which has billions of wings and legs, and has been alive since 1947.
          • @Scrooge McDuck: 'Same chicken each time?'
            - 'No, a different chicken every time!'

          • @Scrooge McDuck: You forgot to include:
            3. Each store has a portal to a different reality from which they pull the same chicken. - Those realities have a reciprocal arrangement where they pull a different same chicken from other realities. - All realities being slightly different is the reason stores might have different sized chickens.

OPs whole family don't know how to use google 😬

KFC sources its chicken from a variety of suppliers, including both large poultry producers and local farms, with a focus on maintaining high quality and safety standards. In Australia, KFC partners with reputable suppliers like Inghams, Steggles, and Golden Farms. KFC's chicken is 100% Australian farm-raised, and they prioritize animal welfare and responsible farming practices.

      large poultry producers

Sounds like the one they go to has large poultry and the other one uses small poultry.

        Paltry poultry?

        • a paltry question …

    • they prioritize animal welfare and responsible farming practices

Why even bother reading any further?

    • -2

This is actually correct - I heard from an inside source
So yes, some stores might end up with bigger chickens than other stores.
Some suppliers (the better ones) and more expensive than others.
      eg Golden Cockerel
Inghams and Turi and the main suppliers

This didn't address or answer the question at all.

  • I also wonder what are the parents of those chicken looks like….

  • +4

This could be wrong, but my understanding is that they buy them from places like inghams, and I remember hearing they are fresh but use frozen stock when they run out/emergencies.

Chicken pieces are cut up in various sizes and I remember reading that they are typically given out equally as in say you buy a 3 piece, you might get 2 big ones and 1 small one. Which is why you might see some KFC happy to swap similar sized pieces but won't like give you 3 big ones otherwise someone else gets 3 small ones. This makes sense to me because well chicken cuts are in different sizes.

But my hypothesis is if you go to a KFC and they aren't giving out pieces equally/fairly that they may be a bit more careless (and I do indeed find KFCs like that to have worser tasting Chicken). Eg they might not be rotating the chicken properly thus some being dryer while others being fresher etc.

That is correct. I did the KFC tour a few times.

I worked at KFC quite a while ago and we had a chicken delivery every morning (except maybe Sunday? And we received an even bigger order on Saturday? I can't remember)

And that's right about the piece sizes. The small pieces were wings and drumsticks so you would have a mix of those with the big pieces of breast, thighs and ribs. You can usually make requests on the pieces, like no wings, extra breast, etc.

Yeah the products do not originate from one single giant chicken. It follows that each location would sell the flesh and carcasses of many thousands of distinct fowls.

    • disappointed, I thought maybe there was a chicken meat tree somewhere

    Kentucky Family Conversation

  • Not all chickens are the same.
Different breeds produce different sized chicken, and you get what KFC orders from that hatchery when they reach killing age.
Ive noticed that 15-20 years ago KFC pieces shrunk as threy have changed to a smaller cook breed for their pieces.

    Shrinkflation

Yes. 2 chickens can't be in the same KFC at the same time. They are different chickens.

  • +2

They grow the chickens in back of store at an accelerated rate from test tubes. When they say, "there's a 20 minute wait on chicken", they actually mean until it's grown "big enough". More time in the growth goo = bigger chicken.

    • Omg😂 there goes my morning coffee

  • A relative of mine works at golden farms and they can get wicked wings (raw) for about $2/kg. Family party always have a huge bucket of fried chicken.
