But if you prefer then run an empty washing machine with vinegar prewash and dish washing powder for detergent at high temp with extra rinse. May be an antibacterial wash
If you are really worried about that, i'd say you have bigger concerns. Primarily putting the shoes in with gunk that should be removed first and also not maintaining an adequately clean washing machine in the first place (but thinking you are). People have done this for decades, you just apply a little common sense.

Of course you dont put it in the wash with visible gunk. A person would have to be next level clueless to think that. But i guess some are these days. How you are meant to wash shoes in washing machine is no different to clothes. If they are soiled etc you take care of that first just like clothes.
Leave them soaked in laundry sink overnight. Rinse and then wash in washing machine. Simples

(1) A person must not place a brassiere into a shoe wash bag for the purpose of laundering said brassiere within a laundry apparatus.
(2) For a breach of subsection (1) to occur, it is not necessary for the shoe wash bag to have ever contained footwear, only that it meets the definition specified in Section 3 of this Act.

Pfft. My running shoes go into the washing machine from time to time. After 400km+ running pavement, trails, mud and rain, you think tumbling around my washing machine for 30 minutes is going to make a scrap of difference?
I've been using this and works well - shoes came out looking brand new. Bag works well to keep the laces/inner sole from getting caught in the washer.
Regarding hygiene concerns - we wash it with the Dettol Laundry Sanitiser.
I didn't realise people washed their shoes. I've gone 42 years without ever having washed a pair of shoes or know of someone who mentioned they washed their shoes.
