    Upgrade from Edgerouter X?

EDIT: seems like it'd be roughly a sidegrade, so for me, not worth the time investment.

    • Definitely more powerful it seems. 4x ram and faster CPU but if your current system is working for you there is no point.

      • Yeah my only "concern" is how well the ER-X will manage the upcoming speed bump from NBN.

        • +3

It's gigabit should be fine. Until we get 2gb nothing should struggle.

        • -1

With the HW offloading setting you get about 750.

          • +4

@zoner: With HW offloading you get very high 900s. Not 750.

            • -2

@PainToad: And this is generally all you get from your ISP anyway - no matter what router you have, you very rarely see the full 1Gb from a 1Gb NBN provider.

              • @Nom:

@Randolph Duke: nbn Gigabit is actually 970Mbps maximum.

                  ?

                  @Randolph Duke Here's an example - https://leaptel.com.au/plans/

                  Super Sonic
                  1000Mbps DOWNLOAD
                  50Mbps UPLOAD
                  Fastest In Australia*
                  Typical evening speed:
                  880/42 Mbps

                  • @Nom: I’ve always got higher than typical, seems like an ass covering exercise for the most part. Always 49/50 upload from all ISP’s I’ve used even in peak times, and 950-980 for download.

UXG-Lite isn't worth it for most users unless you setup your own Unifi network server. Ubiquiti CloudKey is about $500 to manage the UXG-Lite.

Most users are better off with the UCG-Ultra for Gigabit and the UCG-Max or UCG-Fibre for 2Gbps.

      • And…I just purchased a UCG-Fibre to use with my 100/20 FTTN.

        • +1

Check here to see if you can get nbn FTTP.

          • +1

@Twix: Thanks for the link — unfortunately not. Could have sworn my suburb was part of the switch to FTTP rollout a year or two ago.

Edit: In any case, I'm future proofing my network. Do intend to move.

            • +1

@settings: There are more nbn FTTP upgrades to be done between 2026 to 2030.

Try find a place that has nbn FTTP preinstalled or is eligible for the nbn FTTN/FTTC to FTTP upgrade.

              • +1

@Twix: Yeah, FTTP is on high on my list of must-haves.

Cable drops would be a bonus, but I'll settle for FTTP.

                • +2

@settings: Luke's location map is a great tool. Use the nbn link for the latest details.

                  • +1

@Twix: Legend! This is better; I was using rinseout which, at times, fail to load.

                    • @settings: I'd say that's because rinseout looks to be trying to load the datasets for the area's visible on the map, whereas the lukeprior one gets you to select the suburb then loads the data for that suburb.

No real reason for a consumer to need to look at multiple suburbs simultaneously - even if you're using this to shortlist properties, you'll generally be looking around the same area and can put up with the hassel of swapping suburbs if needed.

                      • @Chandler: Yeah good call. I do find value in looking at a suburb to find that they're on FTTN, and to discover that the next one over has FTTP. Not something I'd use all day, just a quick lookup and such.

    • Not really the best compared to the ERX. I need to buy another switch and it can’t be powered by PoE.

    The Deployment image is great.

    POE for everything except this

Currently using a DSL router to two unifi 6 lite access points. Very much a newbie with this stuff - can someone ELI5 why i might/might not need this?

    • Simple router/firewall from my understanding

    • Not an expert myself, but expect it could replace your existing router. As you already use Unifi Wif access points would tie things together and gives you more control over all devices from the Unifi Console. All part of the same ecosystem. Perhaps Google it for more detailed info and videos.

    • +1

Only benefit would be to consolidate your settings. Currently to access your ISP credentials, local IP assignment (DHCP) and view connected devices (wired) you need to go to your DSL Router web interface. Probably 192.168.1.1

Then to access your Wifi network settings and connected devices (wireless) you go to your Unifi web interface, probably your local PC or unifi.ui.com

This router would allow all of your settings to be managed by the unifi interface.

    • Two reasons I can think of:

      • Setup VPN (so you can VPN home when you are away from home)
      • Setup VLANs (but with just 1 port, it will only be useful if you have multiple SSIDs or you have a managed switch)
  • +2

Hmm improvement over my old USG then? I have unifi running on a home server

    • Yes.
It's a direct swap - your USG can only do about 100Mb with all the "stuff" turned on. This can do the full 1Gb.

    • +4

@tromboc if you do go ahead, read this thread before you swap out - https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/180kugo/moving_to… - if your existing network is not 192.168.1.x then you will need to do the step to change the IP of the new Gateway to your subnet before you start (ie 192.168.0.1)

    • Pretty thorough review here. Looks like it has a bunch more features that the old USG can't support.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/18ypigg/uxg_lite_…

Review is dated, newer firmware may have added/removed features. Not sure, need to do further research.

      • Thanks, I ordered one will report back with the results sounds like it should be pretty straight forward.

  • +1

would you still need a unifi controller on a separate box?

    • +2

Yes. You need a cloud key, cloud server or self hosted server for it.

  • +4

So cheap. But given how much most people use their network surely for a bit more it is worthwhile going the cloud gateway ultra for home use if for nothing other than the ultra runs the controller on board.

    • +2

Depends - this thing came out as a straight swap for the old USG, and those USG users were already running the controller on <something>. When you upgrade to this, your existing controller just carries right on 👍

    $18 postage to Sydney

How are they charging $18 for basic shipping? Ruins the deal

      • $69 on Amazon as well, $0 shipping if with Prime
Only 1 left in stock though

  • Just my 2 cents, I bought one of these, doing a isolation test for wan to Lan I can only get 25mbps, both cores of CPU are maxing out showing through htop, still waiting for unifi to give a solution or replace it.
thinking I should just setup pfsense and get a refund

    • Not sure what you're trying to say.

These route at 1Gb with no issue, I'm posting this from mine on a 1Gb NBN plan right now.

  • FYI, got a "Insufficient Stock ETA TBA" on the cart page… But it still let me check out

    • Yeah I have a bad feeling we're all going to get cancelled. WA stores all say 1 of 1 for C&C, before and after I placed an order.

"Sale ends in 3 days 21h 52m 10s or until promotion stock is exhausted."

  • Would I be able to deploy this for my dads NBN connection and manage remotely from the UDM Pro installed at my house?

  • -1

These are bad by the way, dont buy.

    • Care to elaborate?
