A fresh ATL on meross's mini smart plugs - just had a new Camel alert trigger this morning! These were a hit on a recent OzBargain deal (matter variant) so for those looking for a cheaper non-matter variety these are a fantastic alternative.

I've been running these for a couple of months now and they've been brilliant. I've integrated them into HA to automate room heaters, car charging, turn on and off some non-smart lamps for when I'm away on holidays. Super solid on wifi so far and haven't had any issues with connectivity or setup.

Amazon description:

  • Compact Yet Powerful Design: The ultra-compact design(4.3×6.2×6.5 cm) optimizes space efficiency without compromising functionality. Two smart plugs can be easily plugged in side by side without obstruction

  • Quick & Easy Setup: Set up your Meross smart plug effortlessly via Bluetooth and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection. No hub required

  • Real-Time Energy Monitoring: Track power usage in real time and view historical consumption. Meross App lets you calculate electricity costs for reference and make informed decisions to lower your bills

  • Custom Schedules & Timer: Set daily timers, countdowns, or on/off schedules for connected devices

  • Offline Control & Scene Mode: Even without internet, control your alexa smart plug locally via the Meross app. Offline routines keep schedules and timers running. Group devices into scenes and control them all with one tap

Note these are not the Homekit/Matter variant. But they will still work with the meross app, Alexa/Google Home/Smart Things.

There is also a 4-pack available for $52.49 coming to $13.12/unit.

      • Nope, I am not thinking of the old plugs, I literally ordered these 2 weeks ago, and returned them. Look at the one in my link, they are just bigger than the plug input.

I did not downvote the deal btw, but there are smaller plugs out there depending on peoples' needs.

        • +1

The ones you've linked look bigger? They are square and seem to extrude further widthwise into the plug. No offense taken, I'm just wondering how you had issues.

          • +1

@JSONBourne: Cupboard wouldn't close where I have them in a tight spot with an extension cord, so they were too tall for the spot they were in.

Guess it's different if you are using with a power board though, fair point.

The bigger issue was not playing nice with my HA install, I didn't realise containerised vs not had functionality differences.

            • @blazerunner: I run HA as a docker container and have from the get go. Meross plugs including these exact ones work just fine.

              • @theguyrules: Oh damn, I couldn't discover them, I must have messed up the setup 😢

                • @blazerunner: Yeah the main thing I am missing running the docker container are the add-ons but I can live without them

                  • @theguyrules: Just run the add-ons as separate docker containers and point HA to that. That's really all add-ons are in HA anyway.

    • no add-on needed

But a zigbee hub required… And also need add-ons if you want want to use the superior zigbee2mqtt rather than ZHA.

  • Anyone have any experience with these and Home Assistant, I'm a zigbee man at heart. But would definitely give these a go for the price?

    • +1

I run all mine through HomeAssistant. They work perfectly, anything you wanted to know in particular? One thing I like is that if run via matter (different plug), if my HA instance is down they will still run via my Apple TV hub.

  • Do these make a whining noise? I have a similar one from TP link and it annoys me. It's like a capacitor hum all the time.

    • Nope. I am pretty sensitive to noise and use one for my electric blanket. Can't hear a thing except the click when you turn it on/off.

    • +1

Nope, I have one on my electric blanket behind my bed and 0 noise.

  • Do these need a cloud to connect to Home Assistant? What integration do they use?

  • +1

Does anybody have a good review/recommendation of a version of these that can be used outside (rain/splash resistant)?

    • +1

I would also be interested in any recommendations on weather-resistant plugs please and thanks.

    • +3

You probably want this one (also on sale).

It's still not strictly waterproof, but it's more so than the linked deal. I'd buy a cheap waterproof box from Bunnings and modify it to fit this inside as your best bet.

    • +1

I got my electrician to install an outdoor GPO with a Shelly 1 gen 4 inside the junction box.

      Otherwise maybe something like this?

  • Anyone know if there are 15A smart plugs (aus plug)?

Want to use it to charge on 15A cables

  • This is probably a stupid question but do these show the instant power consumption? I mainly want to buy it to monitor power consumption on my electrical devices

  • How have you integrated them into home assistant if they aren't the matter Variant? Or is it via the Hub, which IS integrated with HA?

    • +1

They're wifi. Initial setup using meross app, then integrate with HA using local address.
DISCLAIMER: I don't have any meross devices, but this is usually the process.

      • That's correct!

  • Have any of these energy monitoring plugs have a feature yet, where say the RCD Trips it has a backup battery enough to run and notify loss of power?

Planning to use this in the garage where a chest freezer is hooked up. In the scenario above the feature would be handy.

  • Can these be set to default on when they get powered up?

  • +2

I love how the comment sections has turned into a Mens Shed on how to automate various devices around the house

  • Has anyone used a smart plug with a bedroom lamp? I want my kids bedroom lamps to turn off automatically if they forget. But I still want a manual switch for them if they need it.

    • +2

I've done similar with a smart bulb and a smart switch. IKEA have good ZigBee options…
Not sure a smart plug is the best option for this use case as the manual switch will be the plug button which is not ideal.

      • Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't looked at IKEA's smart products - is it easy to integrate them with other brands (eg; for a smart bulb)?

        • If you have home assistant and a ZigBee hub: yes.
Otherwise, not sure. I know you can pair a single bulb to a single switch without a hub, but then you can't switch it off from an app or timer (I don't think). Need the hub for that.
There are lots of other options, but I'd be going for a bulb + wireless switch as an option over a smart plug for this personally.

  • Hello everyone wow this post became a master of automation and the genius solutions. I’m new to automation got lots of wifi Tapo lights plus tuya motion sensors and use Alexa dots.

Can someone give me the following solution?
    1. After adding this plug on my dryer and washing machine how do I get a notification that washing or dryer is done? I can remotely turn on and off the plugs but don’t know how to trigger when to alert me?

    1. I got motion activated Tuya compatible sensor which triggers front porch lights. I want to activate a command “if I manually switch on the light switch the lights will remain on and by pass the motion sensor”
Why I need this - if I want to turn on the lights for few hours and the motion sensor turns off the lights after 10 mins cause I have set it up. Need a “what if” solution.
  • What firmware are the Meross devices using? Has anyone flashed them with Tasmota?

    • +1

These aren't Tuya, so not flashable. They're inhouse meross units.

  • I ordered two pairs when this deal came on yesterday and just received them. One of the plugs has something loose inside and rattling. Going to return that unit. Just a heads up to check yours when you get them.

  • I had no end of trouble with the older style ones disconnecting from Google Home (my assistant of choice as I do most of my commands via voice) and barely working even on the Meross app. No idea what was wrong with them but they never worked well. Which was a shame as I use their garage door opener all the time. I honestly prefer the Arlec Grid Connect ones for the majority of my smart plug needs - e.g. turning on heaters, gym fan, electric blankets, pool pump and pool heater (both on a water-resistant smart outdoor dual switch) and also patio lights (switch in the roof) and outdoor lights (singular outdoor addon smart switch). They've worked flawlessly the entire time, are small and can fit two next to each other. Power consumption graphs are a bit basic but they work and show me what I need to know. I'm always surprised they don't get better reviews.

  • Website doesn't list specs. Any idea what these are rated up to in kW?

    • 10A at 240V so 2.4kW. But if you sustain this then it may lead to early failures, depending on how they're used. I wouldn't use it on a EV at 100% for hours for example.

      • Might be good info for people hooking these up to their washing machines & dryers.

        • I've never seen a plug rated at kW. Amps is really the only relevant rating. 10A is standard plug rating for australia (at 240V), so you can plug anything that goes in a normal powerpoint in.

  • Do these plugs come in 5ghz frequency?

    • Nope they are 2.4ghz as standard. That's actually better as it keeps IoT off your faster 5ghz network IMO.

  • i just received mine today, its a bloody nightmare to set up? out of the 2 i only manage to get one added to the app, but then i couldnt add the second one. both are stuck in red light mode

ive probably tried resetting in over 20 time… it just goes to red… no wifi. but on my router i can see them, just cant get the smart plugs to light green and stay connected.

its all on the same 2.4ghz wifi. no 5ghz enabled.

and the one that i did manage to add into the app, i can control the power on and off button, without the plug lighting up green. but thats it.

im really at the point getting the hammer out, been trying everything, resetting router, plugs.. i just cant figure it out!

can someone point me to the right direction?

i have tried the airplane mode with wifi only to no results.

    • Yeah i've had similar issues. I left it connected right next to my phone for a while, did a firmware update and it seems to have improved. (the firmware update took what felt like 10 minutes)

But it's still flaky - I haven't had much time to investigate since then.

    • Mine is still dropping out for a minute or two every couple of hours. Anyone else?

      • Turns out my wireless station at the back of the house had been turned off at some point, so the signal was genuinely weak. All sorted now.

  • +1

1 upvote from me just for username 🤣

  • How are people using these ?
Trying to decide what use they are ?

  • Can these plugs be remotely accessed? Or is it lan-only

I seem to not be able to access this remotely

    • Definitely remotely accessible.

      • Mine seems to not be stable…

  • Anyone else having drop outs after 5mins of connection ?

    • Have you assigned a fix IP? And do you have a seperate 2.4Ghz and 5ghz name?
