A fresh ATL on meross's mini smart plugs - just had a new Camel alert trigger this morning! These were a hit on a recent OzBargain deal (matter variant) so for those looking for a cheaper non-matter variety these are a fantastic alternative.

I've been running these for a couple of months now and they've been brilliant. I've integrated them into HA to automate room heaters, car charging, turn on and off some non-smart lamps for when I'm away on holidays. Super solid on wifi so far and haven't had any issues with connectivity or setup.

Amazon description:

  • Compact Yet Powerful Design: The ultra-compact design(4.3×6.2×6.5 cm) optimizes space efficiency without compromising functionality. Two smart plugs can be easily plugged in side by side without obstruction

  • Quick & Easy Setup: Set up your Meross smart plug effortlessly via Bluetooth and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection. No hub required

  • Real-Time Energy Monitoring: Track power usage in real time and view historical consumption. Meross App lets you calculate electricity costs for reference and make informed decisions to lower your bills

  • Custom Schedules & Timer: Set daily timers, countdowns, or on/off schedules for connected devices

  • Offline Control & Scene Mode: Even without internet, control your alexa smart plug locally via the Meross app. Offline routines keep schedules and timers running. Group devices into scenes and control them all with one tap

Note these are not the Homekit/Matter variant. But they will still work with the meross app, Alexa/Google Home/Smart Things.

There is also a 4-pack available for $52.49 coming to $13.12/unit.

that's cheap, only recently bought the Tapo H110M, 3 for $50

    • +1

Yep sub $15 for meross is an amazing price. Especially given they are fully featured. I personally prefer meross for the better app and I've had better experiences with quality.

      • +2

I got a 4-pack of these during Prime day for $49.

Pretty happy with the one I am using. Works perfectly for that job.

    • yeah I would stick with the tapo I have about 8 of them and i only ended up using 6 of them lol. still got 2 spare that I dont' know what t do with yet.

    • The Tapos are great, and the manual button is on top, not on the side like the Meross. One would be blocked from access if using e.g. Clipsal's double outlets.

  • Presumably these do not work with the Tuya app?

    • +3

Yep that's correct, they are meross in-house unless you bridge all devices to Google/Samsung home.

      • Thanks for confirming.

      • Just because I haven't used any of these before: are you saying that all the features for these are set via an in-house app? - and then there is a way to feed any notifications to google HA? (I don't currently use HA but would like to automate a few things for on/off mainly)

        • +2

Just to cover this portion of the question, as I don't have any Meross gear myself.

and then there is a way to feed any notifications to google HA? (I don't currently use HA but would like to automate a few things for on/off mainly)

You can connect Meross devices directly to Google Home, or you can connect them to Home Assistant (HA) and have HA connected with Google Home, and expose the Meross switches to Google that way (i.e. you want to use voice to ask for status or to toggle with the Meross switches).

Up to you if you use Google or Home Assistant to automate things. Whilst Google has made improvements to it's automations, it pales in comparison to what you can do with Home Assistant.

Added to my washing machine and dryer to get notifications once they are finished via home assistant

    • +9

And here's me waiting around for the washing machine to chime to let me know

      • +1

The dryer i got recently doesn't give you an estimate time until it's close to the end. Just says 'AUTO'.

        • +2

My LG washer notifies me via the LG ThinQ app.

          • +2

@gadgetguy: I added my LG washer to HA as well so it announces via Alexa before finish that it will be done in 5 mins and then again when it actually does finish.

            • @bamzero: I have added to HA as well. Can you explain how to announce it on speaker? I have HomePod minis

              • +1

@pc007: Not sure on HomePods. I'm announcing on Dots and Shows using the alexa_media_player component which I just send a notification to and it will speak, using the LG remaining_time sensor as a trigger.

      • And here's me not being close enough to hear the washing machine and dryer, using technology to increase efficiency.

    • +6

As someone who's drier is unfortunately in the garage this was a 10/10 automation to setup

      • I put a TTS notification in android but doesn't seem to work sign iphone

        • Yep I did mine through HomeAssistant. You can then set the notification type to critical and it will bypass silent mode, just as an option.

      • +1

What! Same here! I never thought about doing this.

      • +3

It's funny what automations we find make the biggest differences.

Mines probably the porch light. Switches on/off based on presence or door switch, with time delays. Doesn't run if the sun is above 3.5° elevation. Haven't touched the front light switch since (except to power cycle the light because it's decided to drop off the wifi network… going to switch it to a Tradfri bulb when I get around to getting another one).

    • +1

I use an RGB light to visually tell me when the washing is done which turns off once I open the washing machine door (using a door sensor). Its nice not having the washing machine yell at you when it is done and it acts as a reminder so you dont forget about the washing if it ends while you are out.

      • What light have you been using? I've been wanting to do the same for some other automations.

        • +1

Currently it is just one of my (many) Philips Hue in a lamp.

My eventual plan is to get an addressable RGBWW strip and use different portions of it to indicate different things. E.g. left is washing machine, middle is dishwasher, right is microwave and the rest of the time it is providing light.

EDIT: Something else I saw which this would be perfect for is indicating bin night. You have it show you the colour of the bin to be put out on a given night. I saw someone on the HA community then use machine vision to detect if the bin is out and turn the light off based on that.

      • thinking to do the same with some WLED strips I have lying around.

        Too many unfinished projects

      • I have a USB LED strip that I wanted to control with one of these but unfortunately it doesnt remember state when it loses power, so doesn't power back on automatically :(

    • How did you set this up? Does the notification trigger once power draw drops off for a certain time period?

      • yes, triggered by current consumption.

      • Yes correct, based upon a power drop off after being above a threshold for a certain period of time. I manage it through HomeAssistant which is great for this.

    • how do you do that? is there like a setting you can check power usage ?

    • +2

I tried this before, but the washer goes down to no usage at times during the spin cycle, making it hard to know when it's genuinely finished - unless I add a significant delay/wait (think I needed 15 minutes?).

      • You will need a buffer to allow for drops like that. Does your power meter have a way to graph the energy usage? If so, just graph your wach cycle and then you should be able to determine how low the nergy goes it goes and for how long to set the buffer for.

    • I added a door sensor, then I made the notification persistent until I open the door (or the machine turns back on).

    • Noob question. Do you mean washer and dryers are still consuming power even when they are not running (ie. washing and drying)?

      • +1

They do but it's usually below 20W. My automation will wait for the plug to go above 20W for at least 15 minutes, and when it then drops below 20W that means a load is finished. Works perfectly.

    • How are you notifying? Trying to work out a good way to do this, was going to it to talk to me through a Google Home device but that could become annoying. Now I have a lamp I'm planning to change colours until I empty the washing machine, have a door sensor on my machine so I know when I've opened the door to empty, haven't set up the lamp yet.

I have a notification for when I get home it tells me that the robot vacuum has run, considering something just for when I walk in but it will have to start queuing notifications if I have more than one, might start getting complicated… Find the voice a bit tedious after a while too, maybe a different tone depending on the notification.

      • +1

        Highly recommend pushover.

    • I have using tapo. but have notifications that get send to our mobile phones and broadcasted to google home devices, specially useful when the washing machine is done and clothes need to be put in the dryer

  • +9

Just after I order 2x twin packs, I notice that the 4x pack is also reduced, $52.49 - a few bucks cheaper. Quick cancel & new order coming up for me.

    • +1

Good spot! I'll include that in the post

  • Thanks OP, got the 4x pack

  • +3

This deal isn't for the matter units though (the description sort of makes it sound like it is)

    • +2

Yep that's correct, I put this in the post though:

Note these are not the Homekit/Matter variant. But they will still work with the meross app, Alexa/Google Home/Smart Things.

      I'll clarify some more though.

      • +5

The two pack of the AU Matter versions (MSS315) are also currently on sale directly from Meross (with free shipping - but it takes about 2 weeks to arrive) for $27.99 USD (~$42.94AUD) and you can get coupon codes to reduce the price (there's a "Welcome" code for 5% off at minimum - I just used a 20% off code to bring my price down to $34.40 delivered)

        https://shop.meross.com/products/matter-smart-plug-mss315-au

        • +1

Do you have the 20% off code?

          • @IdiotSandwich: They are one time use (and date limited) only - I do have one more however (which expires on 31/08) if you're interested

        • +1

Thanks for sharing this, I picked a pair up.

          Found a code for 15% off: NEW15.

Brought it to $23.80 USD, which converted to $36.72 AUD using my Up card.

Might be an all time low.

    • +1

      What's the matter?

  • +1

Finally caved after what feels like years of waiting lol - will be going around to replace all my Brillant brand smart plugs.

  • The title on Amazon includes the word WiFi. Not sure now whether these plugs connect via bluetooth or directly via WiFi. I'm running home internet via my phone and can not add more WiFi devices.

    • +4

They connect via wifi, yes. They just use bluetooth to let the app discover them for easier setup

    • The bluetooth is just for setup, but they use wifi after that point for connection. They also work in offline only mode, or LAN-only too.

    • Thanks for the replies. If after the set-up process they rely on WiFi to function on a permanent basis or even intermittently, then this won't work for me. Still not entirely clear on this, but haven't really looked into it either.

      • +3

Yes they do require wifi to really get functionality out of them. You can program schedules into them that run without wifi, but you'll need wifi to communicate to the plugs to set this up initially.

    • +1

I also use my phone for home internet. I ended up setting up an old broken iPhone with this free long-life data sim, and use it just for lights and plugs. Your main phone doesn’t need to be on the same network to control them.

Alternatively you could set up HomeKit on your computer, and so you’ll at least have control while you’re home with your computer online.

      • Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your interesting idea. I do have an old iphone lying around that I recently started up, however not sure if OS matters and if I can have the relevant apps on this old phone. And I only have a work laptop that in principle stays in my bag during the week. Phone solution sounds like it's worth a try, but it'll have to be a 'set and forget' solution.

        • +1

Nw! The old phone doesn’t need any apps. It just needs to work as a hotspot. Although it does need eSIM capability if you want to use the free Roamless offer.

All the set up is done from your main phone (connect to hotspot of old phone, set up plug on Meross app, disconnect main phone from hotspot), then the plug stays online on your old phone hotspot.

          • @oatmatcha: Thank you again. I'll need to check if it has eSim capability, I'm afraid it may not have this.

      • +1

        HomeKit Homebridge*

  • +1

is matter plug worth the extra for HA?

    • +3

I would say yes, very future proofed and can work cross platform a lot better. They're also cloud independent that way if your budget allows.

      • does that mean this non matter plug will not work with HA?

        • +2

It will, you just need to use the merossLAN plugin. Many ways to do the same thing.

If you're not sure, I'd just get non-matter unless you explicitly know it's something you want.

  • +2

Make sure you use the local lan integration for meross or they start sending nasty emails on api call limits

    • Is this by connecting to wifi?

      • This is just when setting up the MerossLAN integration. You have the option to choose via cloud or LAN. Always pick LAN, it's more responsive and you won't run into API limits this way.

  • +1

Do these hold KWH lifetime data ?

  • Thanks got the 4pkt

  • +4

The action button being on the side is a PITA. Particularly if you have 2 side by side in a double GPO

    • This is indeed a usability problem, it's baffling as to why they decided to put the button on the side.

  • Do these have the click of death bad capacitor fix?

    • Nope entirely different unit. That was something that was around in 2022 but this is a different design.

    • Wonder if that is what happened to my 2 KOGAN ones I threw in the bin this week.
My 4 ARLEC ones are working great.

  • all these tiny one got bad reception, i miss the old / big brilliant smart plug, they got brillant reception, the new one are so so and expensive too :(

    • Is that with this unit? I've got the matter/non-matter variants and they've been great for me. No wifi issues at all. Might be worth trying a different wifi channel just to experiment.

  • Do you need a hub with this? Or will it connect directly to a phone app?

    • +1

Directly to the app, no need for a hub on this one. That's just for the matter units.

      • Any advantage of matter vs non-matter?

        • Just comes down to compatibility. You aren't locked into any one vendor this way and the plugs are designed to run in LAN-only mode by default. You can also use more decentralised networks this way.

If you haven't deliberately setup a matter network, HomeKit or the one in this deal is probably sufficient depending whether you're iOS or Android at home.

  • so "compatible with SmartThings" means it can be entirely / partially controlled alongside other Samsung items .. like SmartTags?
I see the power monitoring is only via Meross app, which isnt such a big deal

    • It just means it integrates in with the SmartThings platform. I don't own Samsung myself, so how things can trigger between each device would be based upon what Samsung offers you.

      • no worries - will see how it works out when they arrive ;)

  • I wish it had HomeKit.

    • You can get the Homekit version, just not on sale at the moment. Hopefully soon!

      • But the HomeKit version is bigger and chunkier, overlaps other outlets

        • The Matter/Homekit version is the same size

    • You could set them up on HomeKit via Homebridge but I just use Shortcuts.

  • Got the 4-pack … thanks OP

Need to figure out where to attach them now

  • Whats the difference between these and the one for $42 recently "Meross Matter Smart Plug Mini with Energy Monitor "?

    • +3

Matter is a newer, more broadly compatible protocol that is more universal between smart home device manufacturers, but it has not been adopted by all ecosystems yet. Whatever you're using as a hub would need to support this.

These ones connect via the Meross app, or can be added to HomeAssistant with a Meross add-on IF you are running Home Assistant OS. If you are running Home Assistant in a container sadly you cannot use add-ons. There are some workarounds for setting up add-ons in additional docker containers and communicating with your main HA install, but this is quite deeply technical and a pain in the ass (imo).

    • How are these Meross plugs chonky? They're literally one of the smallest plugs on the market, in fact they are slightly smaller than even the Tapo and Kasa smart plugs.

    • +2

You're thinking of the old plugs. These are the new style released some months ago, they fit perfectly side by side in standard Australian powerpoints.
