With some of the NBN plans getting a speed bump soon I was looking for a new router with gigabit ports. This is the cheapest one I could find with gigabit ethernet ports.

  • There is more to it than Gigabit ports. Your router needs a fast CPU and have enough RAM.

What speed are you changing to?

True. This isn't my main router though. It's replacing a 10 yo access point in a far flung wing of my house that hardly anyone ventures to. I'm going to 500/50 so as long as the speed is somewhat close to that for the one or two devices that may connect to it occasionally, it will do.

I used to have an old tplink vr500v on a gigabit connection. Was 100% fine for wired devices, zero issues. You don't need a supercomputer as a router either provided you are a basic/normal user.

      • Some older routers work fine on Gigabit. Some users need a new router for best results.

Tenda Nova MW6 for example has a slow CPU.

Single core 1GHz CPU and 128MB RAM.
Ethernet - maximum of around 700Mbps.
        Wi-Fi - up to around 400Mbps.

  • What's the deal with NBN plans getting a speed bump? Infrastructure upgrade or something? tia

    • +2

Many nbn FTTN and FTTC homes can get a free FTTP installation.

nbn FTTP and HFC connections get a speed bump and 2000Mbps plans will be available.

Old Speed Tiers New Speed Tiers nbn Technology Type
      100/20 500/50 FTTP and HFC
      250/25 750/50 FTTP and HFC
      1000/50 1000/100 FTTP and HFC
      2000/100 HFC
      2000/200 FTTP
      2000/500 FTTP
      • Any word on symmetric speeds?

        • +1

Only for nbn enterprise ethernet (up to 10Gbps symmetrical).

  • noob here, is this nbn ready, plug and lay ?

    • It's not 100% plug and play. You'd have to configure the admin and wireless passwords probably.

  • So no CPU/RAM specs for this router.

Google too hard for you to use?

      • I've checked on their website and it does not list it. Why would you check anywhere else?

        • Just because their website doesn't list it, doesn't mean others haven't worked it out.

We are talking about a $25 device.

    • CPU unknown and it may have 128MB RAM.

      • +1

It's dual core, look at the work they have been doing on OpenWRT.

As an FYI. This router set as an access point managed to get about 490mbs over wifi testing with iperf3. My other router on the same network maxes out at about 650mbps.
