  • Needs at least 2x 2.5gbe ports

The ASUS TUF AX6000 seems to be better than this at $208 and includes 2 2.5gbps ports (1x WAN, 1x LAN)

      • But the TUF AX6000 uses a mediatek chip instead of Broadcom.

I personally have no issues with it (I have a GT AX6000 and 2 TUF AX6000 in Mesh).
but others have a meltdown about using Mediatek chipsets.

      • We pay for the chipset which lets you use improved firmware like Asus-wrt. I've been using the RT-AX86U (non-Pro) for 3 years now, the Asus-wrt firmware makes the difference.

      • I happened to own both routers.
I am no expert of router specs but have been using and configuring routers for the past 20+ years.
I had continuous issue with AiMesh nodes keep dropping offline when I was using TUF-AX6000 as my main router.
        AiMesh nodes were RT-AX58U(wired), RT-AX55(wired) & RT-AX53U(WiFi).
Since I upgraded my main router to RT-AX86U my AiMesh nodes are RT-AX58U(wired), RT-AX55(WiFi) & TUF-AX6000(wired).
I can hardly remember if I had any AiMesh node offline issue at all.
It is pretty lmited case of observation but RT-AX86U looks like more stable AiMesh main router, at the leastr in my experience.

        YMMV.

  • Which one between the 3? Similar prices

Well compared the TUF AX6000 to the AX86U Pro:
      Memory
256 MB Flash & 512 MB RAM vs 256 MB Flash and 1 GB RAM - AX86U Pro wins
      2.4GHz 4x4 5GHz 4x4 vs 2.4GHz 3x3 5GHz 4x4 - TUF AX6000 wins
MediaTek MT7986AV vs Broadcom BCM6750 - I say same same, some say Broadcom, AX86U Pro wins
      Dual 2.5G vs single 2.5G - TUF AX6000

      Ultimately its up to you.

  • How easy is Asus to setup for a noob in routers?
On HFC soon going from 100/20 to 500/50
Now on Optus modem I think wifi 5

    • +2

super easy. The Asus stock settings interface is very intuitive

Some ISPs do require, still, to put username/password as PPPoE authentication method for NBN,
but majority of ISPs and for their new customers, they do have DHCP type like Telstra NBN, which do not require to put username password.
This means you just need to plug in the router to your NBN box via WAN port and thats it. You prob want to log into 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to configure the wifi though.

  • Man i have 31 connections. We can just make it the same ssid and password and it will change over right?

    • Yes. I do that when I tether on my phone and my kid's ipad connect nonethewiser

I was tempted by this on Prime day but after doing a bit of research decided against it. Hardware is getting pretty old at this point and nearing EOL. Considering how long I've had my current router I'm waiting for something more modern.

    • Based on your research, what is recommended?

      • Sorry that was as far as it went - once the impulse died down from Prime Day I realised I really didn't need to upgrade immediately.

      • By this point all the improvements are in Wi-Fi, if you already have a solid setup, i.e. Wi-Fi 6 mesh with ethernet to TV, PC, security, etc, only mobile devices on wireless, won't see much improvements even with the latest and the greatest routers.

        • I have Wifi 5. Looking to upgrade

  • Should note, that adding the free "dragon age game" counted as a separate asus item, and as such triggered the 2xasus products for $50 amazon credit

    • $50 credit gone, but free game is still available.

  • Not sure what firmware these would come with but might be worth downloading the latest first then flashing it before you connect it to your internet (earlier firmware had an issue with malware that's since been patched)
