It doesn't have enough antennas for me.

  • +3

    Supports openwrt

  • Seems like an all-time low price for this one?

    • +2

I got it for $188 earlier this month.

  • Thanks OP! Was looking for a good router deal from a while, grabbed one.

  • +1

Actually this one or Flint 2 ?

    • +2

I'm also considering between the two, but from what I've read, if you only need one router get the Flint 2. If you need more than one or want vlans, go with Asus due to the better mesh integration and vlan support.

  • +2

Can confirm. Great router. Has very good range and speed, with this price is all time low. Its a steal.
Good choice for ai mesh too if youre already on asus network.

  • +4

Saw a quip somewhere along the lines of "all routers look like either a dead tarantula or an oil diffuser". This one's going in column A.

  • +1

    This or the RT-AX86U PRO?

  • +2

When you set this bad boy up, turn off auto firmware update (Asus set it as on by default). The last auto firmware update cooked mine.

    • Wtf I have another ASUS router and auto update factory resets it. I recommend saving your last working configuration so can just easily restore it.

  • Can I use this as Wifi Extender like Beryl 3000 ?

    • +1

You can run this as Wifi Extender / Access Point
but performance will be better if you run as a mesh node (which requires primary router to be Asus)

  • can confirm there is a code for an extra $15 off for Amazon Business customers

  • +10

The price for me dropped even further adding Dragon Age Veilguard through a promo available (not sure if targeted/only available to Prime) which brought the game and router down to $158 total when combined with $50 credit.

    • +1

      Thanks for this :)

Without your link I didn't see a place you could redeem it.

    • Can anyone confirm?

I'm non-prime and it's saying I can use the $50 on the next order.

      • +1

Mine too added at full price and displayed wrong (total) cost while sitting in cart, but upon 'check out' the total was discounted by the cost of the game + $50

See if going all the way through to last step (payment) has adjustments for the total cost.

        • I changed the game from Standard to Deluxe edition which was causing the issue. Left it standard and worked fine.

    • I attempted to use this with the Dragon Age claim PLUS the $5 off via VISA (promo is shown in router listing page), but the total came to $203 ($208 - $5)

In short, just do Dragon Age claim plus router and my total too came down to $158.

I think they botched up as the ASUS $50 credit is meant to be for 2+ qualifying ASUS products, where one was only bought in my and @Mtat case

    • $50 credit is only of you buy 2+ asus products.

      • +1

That's what they state on the listing, but my purchase had the $50 applied provided you also claimed the free game.

        Bug in the system

        • I can't find it anymore, and the dragon age seems to be sold out, so i just used the phone amazon app to use the $20 discount.

    • Can confirm this just worked for me too, I had ordered at $208 and cancelled the order. I then used the method from this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/920518 and stacked it with the Visa discount to bring it down to $153

  • Bought one off marketplace for $80 last year.

    Absolute ripper of a router.

  • bought this one
    rubbish btw
    cannot recommend it

    or I received a lemon
    ax82u a far better choice

    • +2

I got 2 of these and they were solid in performance
no drop out or other issues

    • So what's bad about it?

      • +1

I replaced my ax82u with it
and have only had issue after issue

        devices disconnecting on wifi
cant setup smart home devices etc

ended up taking the dive and went for RT-BE96U
        and now everything is PERFECT

  • This or GL-iNet Flint 2? I need one with powerful parental control like block certain website, apps or full control of wifi service to specific devices within the house….E.g. control internet services to my children’s devices but leave parents devices or cameras alone. Thanks guys

    • Unsure with the flint but with asus ax86u pro you can do that. You can even set a specific WiFi just for kids, control time etc, lock websites, family dns. Tons of options

    • check this video for Flint parental controls
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOyDwQRc3io&t=19s

  • Not enough antennas

  • Isn't this better than the AX 86U ? can someone elaborate on why that one is more popular lol, more antennas, better cpu(?)

    • +1

Appear to have very similar specs…..I went with this one as its $30 cheaper.

      • +2

        same, went with this one

        • +1

Same, I think it's better to save the $30. Minimal difference between the two.

  • Is there any differences between wifi 6 and 7?

    • +1

Nothing you'll notice unless your connected devices support WiFi 7 as well.

  • I personally would not get a router without the 6GHz band these days

For example. I'd get this for $184 if I was in the market

6GHz is useless especially if you walk away and through walls the throughput degrades heavily. If you're trying to achieve gigabit speeds you're better off with an AP setup or wired ethernet.

      • Works great for me across my whole house. It's not significantly higher than the 5GHz band. You should expect slightly worse distance than 5GHz. Hardly useless especially with the 5Ghz being quite congested these days.

    • I can see this as being useful for people with devices supporting WiFi 6E and live in a very congested area (e.g. apartments). But it's probably not too much of a concern for people in even smaller houses.
