Medical Insurance for 3 Months in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia

Hi guys, I’m looking for medical insurance recommendations for traveling in South East Asia.

I don’t have a credit card or insurance through my bank since I didn’t book the trip with them, so I’m after standalone travel insurance.

Looking for people that can share experience with a reliable insurer cheers!

Pick any travel insurance company, and look through the PDS? Just look for the key things which apply to you, ie pre-existing medical, rental excess, extreme sport activities. etc.

They are all reliable, as long as it's in the PDS.

Then google or search OzBargain for discount codes or cashbacks….

Any travel insurance company EXCEPT TICK !!!!!!

Southern Cross appeared reasonable and very professional to me when I travelled to Thailand last November
They have very good reviews on Product review.
Especially when you filter by claims experience which is what its all about

Yes… It would be a good idea.

3 months in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia….you are likely either to drive a scooter or be a passenger. Look at insurance policies which don't exclude motorbike usage and read the PDS. Take time to read the PDS, it is worth it.

I had a policy with Medibank Private which was fine and covers most of the SEA important stuff, however I haven't claimed anything.

If you still have time you can apply for Bankwest More World credit card, $270 fee, the travel insurance is for 6 months, no spending requirements to activate, and you get 10 Mastercard lounge passes. You can cancel it when your trip finishes. Depending on your age the agency travel insurance cost could be more than the card fee.

    • Bankwest More World gives you CoverMore Basic insurance for free, which is good value for young healthy people as they cover most adventure activities, including moped if you have an Australian drivers lisence, without any additional fees.

But they will try to screw you over anyway they can, so need to read their PDS carefully. Anything that could possibly be a pre-existing condition will be treated as such unless proven otherwise. You had a high blood pressure reading at a doctors visit, they'll deny your claim for a stroke you had overseas.

That's valid for all the insurers….read the PDS and disclose any pre-existing conditions. If in doubt, contact them preferably via email, so you can have a trail.

I have a pre-existing condition and do every time an assessment with CoverMore to get a clearance. For my condition the assessment is easy and could be done online or over the phone at no extra cost. They send a confirmation with a policy number included.

Wrong. Words and commas matter. Read it for yourself.

'But ChatGPT said …', won't save you later on.

        • you're doing it wrong. use chatgpt for a summary or answer a specific section, then ctrl F the relevant section to confirm. but feel free to read all 80 pages if you don't have anything better to do

    • You just saved me about ~$150. I already have a Bank West card and had no idea the travel insurance was included. Just refunded two policies I bought for upcoming trips.

Maybe financial products just aren't your thing?

Just refunded two policies I bought for upcoming trips.

I'm looking forward to your 'travel insurance claim got denied - pls help' post

you sound like a nasty piece of work. complimentary credit card insurance is perfectly fine as long as you know exactly what it does and doesn't cover

            @V2L:

complimentary credit card insurance is perfectly fine as long as you know exactly what it does and doesn't cover

Of course, and I have used credit card travel insurance myself.

However, @mnko doesn't appear to be aware of the financial products they hold.

    • That sounds great, especially not needing to have paid for the travel through the card in order to qualify for insurance.

I use Travel Insurance Direct for all my travelling. Made a claim recently and it was a easy process.

My experience, don't go there without insurance. Trust me. $$$$$

  • We used Allianz recently for a cruise and they processed the claim quickly and effectively. Will use again.
