Can Someone Please ELI5 The JB Hi-Fi Phone Plan/Cancellation Thing?

like my brain is very fragile right now.
my wife and i's phones are like 5 or 6 generations out of date, so we are kind of needing new phones before they just age out of software requirements or straight up just breaks.

we would love to get the pixel 10s as we like that operating system and big fans of the cameras.

can someone walk me through, step by step [like the sometimes kind reddit people do], of how to get these phones on plans and then cancel so we can go back to prepaids?
or even a cheap plan that has two phone numbers on it?

i have a MDD and GAD and Panic syndrome and agoraphobia. so i usually do everything online, but what i am seeing is i have to go into jbhifi and do all of this?
its freaking me out even thinking about doing this.

im also only on a disability pension and wife is on carers payment, is this going to be a killer that wont let me do this deal?

sorry for being the inconvenient person.
please help me.
thank you for reading my dilemma

Nothing to freak out about, very easy to do. You go in, you sign-up, you cancel whenever later on (a day etc.) and pay the cancellation whatever it is. Then you can go on a cheap plan.

Just wait until someone posts their deal here and you'll see.

im also only on a disability pension and wife is on carers payment, is this going to be a killer that wont let me do this deal?

Could be a deal breaker, you'll find out when they try a check. Maybe someone here already knows the answer before that :)

Pass the checks first then come back to us.

    • -1

how can i pass the checks these days?
i havent had a phone post paid plan for nearly 20 years now

      • Download the App called ClearScore and check your Credit Scores. (I am not related to them but I do use the App)

        • +1

looks like 763 and no applications on credit in past 5 years

Just buy a Samsung A56 when it is $499. It is decent and "most likely" more reliable than a Pixel. If you are on pensions and carers support, it saves you the trouble from a failed credit check.

BTW, the cancellation fee is now $1000 per number. Do you really want to spend $2000 for 2 phones?

    • +2

i rather spend $2000 for 2 phones every 5+ plus rather than $500 per phone per year.
i have not had a lot of luck with the a56 as my parents have them and theyre pretty terrible

      • -1

Are we talking the same A56? Samsung A56 should be much better is every way than your 5 or 6 years old phone.

Samsung A56 is as fast as a Pixl 7: https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/samsung-exynos-1580-vs…

        • yes current gen a56 from samsung.
i have set up (tried to) and constantly using (yay for parental it dept) and they are just terrible to use and seemingly always has some type of bullshit issues with it. yes i attribute most of that due to parents not knowing a whole lot tech wise…. but i just seemingly dread everytime i use samsungs now days.
i have used iphones, samsungs, oppo, pixels and even a diy phone kit at one stage.
pixels have been the best for my usage and style.
but even now it annoys me that the pixels were the budget conscious phone while not compromising on tech and usability, but now theyre just as expensive as the galaxy and iphones.
i have been waiting for the pixel 10 to come out thinking i could get a 9 on a plan and pay it off, but at release the 10s are cheaper than the 9s.

Imagine you run a lemonade store. You need lemons and a lemon squeezer to run your lemonade store.

You go to the market one day and see Bob selling lemons for $1 and Bob's friend Steve selling a lemon squeezer for $24. Bob tells you if you make a promise to buy lemons from him for two years, Bob will tell Steve that you're a nice kid and let you buy Steve's lemon squeezer for free. But if you break your promise with Bob and don't buy lemons from them for two years, you have to pay Bob back $10.

If you make your promise with Bob, you get your lemon and lemon squeezer for $1. If you break your promise and buy lemons from someone else, you need to pay Bob back $10, so you spent $11 of your money.

If you don't make a promise with Bob, you'll need to buy the lemon squeezer from Steve for $24. So this will cost you $25 if you include the lemon from Bob.

Since $25 is a bigger number than $11, you spend less of your pocket money if you break your promise with Bob.

      the condescension is real.

but thats on me for not specifying that im talking about the steps of getting it done rather than the broad "how does it work" vibe

      • +10

well you did ask for an eli5

        • -6

yes…. thats why i said "but thats on me for not specifying that im talking about the steps of getting it done rather than the broad "how does it work" vibe"

          "Please explain like I'm 5"
          Explains like he's 5
          "How dare you…"

and what do I do about the lemon stealing horse? (I'm deliberately misspelling this)

    • +2

      Got any grapes?

  • So just to be clear…if I cancel there is no pro-rata of the monthly fee, just the $1000 voucher fee.

Does that $1000 reduce over time at all?

    Looking at pixel 10 deals

    P10 pro xl
    2000
    Contract voucher 1400
    Trade in 370
$230 paid on the day, phone and $400 preorder gift card in pocket.

I can then just port out to whoever, pay the $1000 and keep my $2000 phone and $400 voucher?

I was considering just staying on the $99 plan but effectively still costs $1900 for phone + voucher compared to my usual cheaper aldi plan.

If I can pay ~$1200-1300 and cut back to aldi I'll definitely do that instead.

    • The $1000 is pro-rata. Halfway through the plan it'll be $500, even though you may have paid over $1000 in monthly fees by then

      • Thankyou for the clarification. That seems more than reasonable. Unfortunately my most recent visit they did not allow stacking the trade bonus with the mobile plan stuff. So no go for now.

The JB deal of signing up on a plan and cancelling isn't as ozbargain-friendly as it used to be, they increased the cancellation fee to $1,000

So even if they give you a $0 Pixel 10, you'll have to pay $99 first month then $960 cancellation (pay one month, have the repayment decrease by 1/24th), so it'll be over $1k still.

Better off to just preorder and buy outright looking at the numbers right now. Or hope there are similar Pixel 9 clearances like last month to get rid of the rest of the stock (where 9 Pro XL's were going for under $1k. The Tensor G5 chip is not worth the upgrade).

    • But you're paying ~$1060 and getting a p10 and the preorder gc (aka ~$1650ish value). If you can utilise the trade-in then even better (just make sure it's your best option).

Still sounds like a $600 discount, perhaps a bit more depending on trade (eg my old phone is worth ~$200 more via trade than selling outright on eBay/marketplace)

      • If you can actually do both then that's not bad, but the terms do say the mobile plan isn't available with any other offers.

        • +1

If I'm reading the same page, it says not available with any other mobile/broadband offer (as opposed to other retail offers?).

I know staff can be wrong, but I did ask today and they said that mobile plan + trade offer + preorder offer all stack.

          • @mattman: Ah cool, that sounds pretty good then.

They're offering $400 for an iPhone 13 pro too, it's tempting to jump on this. Just a shame they have giftcards rather than a reduced phone price.

            • @freefall101: Ugh just went back to sign up and told the preorder gc is fine, but can't stack the trade bonus with mobile plan.

              • @mattman: Did you go ahead with the deal anyway?

                • +1

@kiitos: No, losing out on the trade bonus it doesn't stack up for me.

  • +12

Brettles no offense but if you're on the DSP are you really going to spend $1000 on a phone even with the discount? You will have about $100 left after costs for two weeks

Saying that DSP shouldn't be a problem if you have a credit card, if you don't then it's going to be harder. Please avoid $99 plans etc, stick to prepaid for your budget.

And this is why I hate those phone hacks posts. Vulnerable people are doing it and getting themselves in financial trouble thinking they can either resell the phones for profit or write off weeks of pension to get a new phone which they can't afford in the first place. Just observing the general vibe and appearance of people doing the iPhone hack @ JB when it first appeared and it wasn't pretty.

    • +2

Not sure you understand what savings are?

Yes, the DSP is not much more than $1k/ fortnight but there's no suggestion OP is living pay cheque to pay cheque.

      • -1

Savings on the DSP? Are you kidding? But I assume the OP and his partner is living in public housing going by his condition. Then NDIS so maybe your right that he has savings, but I doubt it.

I'll say again blowing $1000 on a phone while on the DSP is not really a good idea or logical. Live within your means etc. We all want nice shiny expensive things, but you live within your budget.

And these phone deal hacks suck in vulnerable people, the guy is asking on a deals forum where if he read the posts properly, he should have a clear understanding of how these deals work. He doesn't, so expecting him to navigate these trash deals without putting himself into debt or financial trouble is not realistic.

        • +1

I have family on DSP and they have both savings and investments, flagship phones, and plenty of "shiny expensive things". Surprisingly (to you), they budget, save, and use ozbargain to avoid paying RRP.

          • @Bruceflix: OK then I stand corrected. But I'm curious now, do your family who are on the DSP live at home or public housing? Are they also on the NDIS?

  • +4

Just buy a cheap outright x2. Plenty of good Motorola deals and they are good phones.
