  3. sign up for an account, and take down the address they give you

Instructions for Purchasing Kindle (use Google Chrome for auto-translation)

  1. next, if you are happy to use my referral link to check out the kindle paperwhite, go to: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B007OZO03M/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=t…
  2. sign up for an account using the address Tenso gave you (if you're stuck this might help: https://www.tenso.com/en/guide/buy/address.html)
  3. pay for the kindle at Amazon
  4. wait for Tenso to email you with payment instructions and postage cost (which should be about $30)

I know this is a bit fiddly, but it saves $35 from the amazon.com price.
I've been reading up about this and the Japanese version of the kindle paperwhite works exactly like the US version. Hope some of you are willing to go through this process to save a reasonable amount of $$$!

  • donkeykong, I didn't enter a code. That's why I was so surprised.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, sheepy. :(

  • It did not work for me either.

Note that the Amazon US price of $139 is the "Without Special Offers" (i.e. ads-free) version. You can save $20 and buy one "with Special Offers" for $119 + ~$12 shipping. That's only ~$131 shipped.

I'm not sure about the $85 from Japan is with or without the "Special Offers". If it is not ads-free, it might not be worth the while to save the $15.

you can't get the add one shipped to Aus directly from Amazon

    • Japan's version is all ad-free…

  • Will this Kindle PPW allow me to download English books from Amazon.com and Japanese books from Amazon.co.jp? Will books be configured automatically for reading?

    • depends on which account u use to register ur kindle. eg. if u use US amazon acc u may buy or download english book while Japan acc for Japanese books. I guess u cannot have both at the same time. Format of books from Amazon bookstore are configured for reading, but u still can try settings like font style, size…to cater for ur personal reading taste.

  • I just paid for my Tenso shipping, it was 2,170 yen. According to xe.com it would be about $23. Not sure how much 28 degrees will charge me though.

    • Hmm, my kindle was 600g. I wonder why there's such a large variance.

      • Maybe they are wrapping yours better..

The device itself is apparently 213g

    • Let us know how long it takes for delivery from japan.

  • I have ordered 2 and report back to OZ once Tenso emailed me.

  • My 2 Kindles packed to 1100g and costs 3780y.

  • Looking forward to hearing on peoples experience with Tenso.
I've found a bunch of stuff on Amazon.jp that I must have.

Received mine today. Turn it on and select English UK with no issue. It has no advertisement and has the usual XRAY function. It is now doing the automatic update.

  • I have managed to downgrade the firmware to 5.3.1 before jailbreaking it. This was followed by upgrading it to firmware 5.3.3 with success.

    • Can I ask what's the reason you want to jb this device?

  • My kindle came today in a tough bag with no padding.

    Not really impressed.

    • Who did you use?
I used Tenso. They just slapped on another sticker onto the Amazon shipping box. Inside the Amazon box is the Kindle box, mounted on a frame with shrinkwrap. Very secure. No damage at all.

  • Tenso.

I just had the kindle box in a tough bag.

    440g

Also oddly it was already registered to my amazon account.

    • +1

Apparently registering is normal when bought from amazon.

The price paid reflected on my Westpac VISA Credit Card (no foreign transaction fee on CC so must have been charged in AU dollars) was $87.82 on amazon.jp.
And for TENSO (same CC but using PAYPAL linked to CC) was $22.01.

      Total price: $109.82 delivered.

    • Mine was 600g. Well that explains why mine weighed more. You were right, they did wrap mine better. :)

The kindle will be registered to your account unless you mark it as a gift. It's stated in your cart or on the checkout page near the top.

  • I have just opened my second kindle and was a bit disappointed to observe some slight uneven brightness at the bottom edge. My first kindle was perfect.

    • ebay it and order another one? You probably won't lose much, if at all!

  • +1

Took 8 days from ordering to delivery in Oz which I think is pretty good, I ordered on a Saturday. Kindle was in its original box and that was plastic wrapped inside another box.

I noticed the Tenso shipping was marked as 'not insured' by default, ticking the insurance box changed that and added nothing to the cost.

  • This is what the default instructions were from the Tenso page,

but I kept getting this error. (Translated by Chrome)

The number of characters that can be entered is limited to 15 characters. If more than 15 characters Please enter divided into 1, 2 address.

    Figured out in the end,

I don;t know why amazon doesn't let you write an english address, or for that matter let us choose drop shipping companies directly, not a big enough market perhaps.

Man some people are making a killing at this, I saw a few on ebay go for 270 + AUD.

PS: You can get a 500 yen Shipping coupon on Tenso by submitting a proof of address after sign up.
if you do it before the 1st of April 2013.

    • HI Dealman

Thank you for telling us about the Shipping coupon - do you know what Tenso will accept as proof of address (anything else apart from Drivers Licence)? Thanks.

  • Hi all - thanks to the OP. Finally got around to doing this and ordered from Amazon.co.jp on Monday night.

My package arrived at Tenso on Wednesday and I've paid for it to continue its journey to me now. Pretty nifty process.

I expect I'll receive it Monday or Tuesday so about a week turnaround in total.

With the account verification discount included from Tenso (as the above post has outlined) I've purchased the KindlePW complete with the official Amazon Kindle cover for about AUD$146.

Not bad considering these babies set you back $169 at Dick Smith, and when the Amazon covers come in you can expect them to be $40 to $50.

    Hi,

I'm a bit late to the party, but just thought I'd add to this.

First, I ordered three (the max you can get from Amazon in one transaction) and got an email from Tenso saying that they can only ship two lithium ion batteries per package. This is probably something I should have known, but thought I'd pass on the info.

Shipping for two of them cost ¥3,780 JPY (roughly $40 AUD) and shipping for the third cost ¥1,490 JPY (roughly $15 AUD) which includes 500 JPY off for sending them a copy of my Drivers License.

So for three Paperwhites it is ¥ 23,940 (from Amazon), + ¥3,780 JPY + ¥1,490 JPY = ¥29,210 JPY which is roughly $300 or $100 each - not too shabby!

  • Just made my purchase at Amazon, now I guess I sit back and wait for contact from Tenso (I'm guessing they contact me once they receive the shipment from amazon?)

Also purchased the Leather case with it for a total Amazon cost of $120 AUD (Using their exchange). Signed up and sent in proof of address, so hopefully Tenso isn't too exxy. A little excited for my new toy.

The warranty on these is somewhat international right? Ie I can contact Amazon US if I have any issues?

Google Chrome's translate feature proved very useful for this also :)

    • Well done - you will love it! And the case is great too.

If you're lucky you may just get it in time for the weekend, otherwise Monday or Tuesday depending on where you are.

Yes - Amazon global should be able to help with any warranty issues.

  • well ordering it was quiet an adventure especially getting the adress part right.

  • Hi can someone please tell me whether Tenso use Australia Post or a courier company? It will be easier to pick up something from the Post Office if I'm not home then try and track down a courier company. Thank you

  • research on Google says it'll be Australia post.

hoping for my package to arrive tomorrow as it already reached Melbourne. so i'll be able to tell for sure once it arrives.

  • OK…be kind, I want to start by saying a big THANK YOU! Now for the dumb question

I have an Amazon account. It would appear though you need to sign up for a Amazon Japan account because I can't get the damn thing to work using my normal account email and password.

Also, I WILL TRY to use your referral link, it is the least we can do for all our work.

Question 2…is this still the cheapest option for Aussie buyers? I am buying two, and that will save me $75!!!! Which is well worth the time abd effort.

    Thanks in advance

    Tracey

  • OK…so I decided I couldn't wait, want to have this in time for sons birthday when he visits from Melbourne. Worked out that Amazon.com is separate as far as accounts are concerned so now have a Amazon.jp account as well. I THINK I used your referral link, but I am not sure.

SO two (got myself one for Mothers Day lol) $169.77 plus what ever visa adds on for conversion…

Have to wait to hear from Tenso after they check my ID. When I uploaded it they said they had a shipping offer on, so am assuming they are continuing the offer. SO we will wait and see.

Will update as soon as I get the charges. Paying that by Paypal so not sure how much they will charge for conversion.

BASICALLY - apart from the shipping and $$ conversion charges TWO for the price of ONE!!!!

    Ripper Rita

    Thanks heaps darryllxu and smackus

    Tracey

  • With continued devaluation of the Japanese Yen, this should be even cheaper now - more like <$100
