wow these are starting to come down in price… hmmm emulation handheld shortly.

  • I already have a Steam Deck, the first generation 64gb one. Would this be much of a upgrade?

    • +1

nah it isn't better, there's trade offs for both, but not really worth buying

    • +4

If you already have a Steam Deck, I would say there's not much of a point. It will definitely be an upgrade performance wise, but it will come at the cost of battery life. Steam Deck's battery performance scales a little nicer, especially for low demand games.

With that said, the screen is better, VRR is GAME CHANGER, performance is, at this point, better than the Steam Deck in every measurement possible other than battery life, hall effect joysticks are a joy, they're comfortable to hold and the sound is pretty good. It also comes with 512gb and a microSD slot that is veeery responsive.

Don't trust the reviews from 6-12 months ago, they don't do justice to the Claw. Intel has put in the effort to update the drivers, and it is a completely different beast now.

      • I kinda just want to upgrade from my original Steam Deck to get higher Hz as I'm too used to 100 and above.
I only use my Steam Deck to stream games from my gaming PC. I love the trackpads too much so I'll probably hold out a few more years for another Steam Deck model.

        • +1

go the OLED steamdeck. I actually prefer it over the 120hz ally - even though it's 90hz I actually find that good enough considering the screen size, coupled with the fact that it's OLED - yeah 100% recommend. I also mainly use it for streaming from my pc

  • sorry old man noob question: my son started playing Forza 5 in PC. Would this run it?

    • +1

Looks like it should hit decent FPS on low settings.

    • yep - Forza Horizon 5 is pretty much the gold standard for optimisation. Incredible.

    • Should be able to run Forza 5.

Also look into lossless scaling which can double your frames.

Unfortunately both the 1tb and 512gb seem to have been ozbargained.

    • Forza would run beautifully and the Forza series is a benchmark for optimisation. It runs VERY well anywhere. The YouTube post above shows good results, but you can push more than that. I could easily push consistent 75+ FPS on Forza Horizon 5 with mine without lossless scaling, but using XeSS balanced. Lossless scaling can artificially double that, and, while it won't feel like it's actually double the frames, it does feel a lot smoother. Something like ~90ish FPS.

Lossless scaling also helps saving battery a little bit.

I had a legion go s with z2 go chip and I found it pretty weak is this much better

    • Probably not

    • which AAA game it could not run properly?

      • -3

I had indiana Jones on minimal settings and max tdp running 25fps but it would only have an hour 15 min of battery

        • have you tried steam os on it?

          • -5

@xenway: I ended up returning it and getting a switch 2 and Ive overall just found it much easier for me already having lots of switch 1 games and not needing to purchase new steam games because I already have all my games on my Ps5

            • +5

              @GarryBriggs: But…a Switch 2 won't play your PS5 games either…

          • +1

@xenway: SteamOS is still not very good for intel CPUs and there intel driver updates on the linux side is much slower. Generally, you'd get lower performance on the SteamOS at the cost of a potentially slightly better battery life.

            You're better off:
            1. Debloating Windows 11 and removing every possible thing that affects performance and battery life.
            2. Waiting for the Xbox dedicated OS that will come in October with the release of the Xbox Ally.

            • @martinezjpo: thanks hmm i thought we were discussing legion go s z2 which i am really interested in but have no clue how it performs battery wise

              • @xenway: Whoops, missed that. Sorry! The Lenovo Go S Z2 does it use AMD Processors. Might be worthwhile trying SteamOS or Bazzite in it. :)

To be honest, apart from the ROG Ally X, I think they all have similar-ish, underwhelming battery life. If you reeeaally need battery life, I'd say get a Switch 2 if you like Nintendo. If you want PC gaming, then yeah, bit of a problem across the industry

                • @martinezjpo: i have switch 2 and so nintendo typical that they are not willing to put more battery on it. switch 2 battery life performs not good. And it seems steam deck has good reputation that is why i am more cline to its successor Legion go s at the moment.

Yea. This chip is faster than the Go. More power hungry though.

For this price, you can’t get any better handheld.

  • Oos ☹️ for excellent condition model

    • 1TB still available in good condition

  • No stock.

  • -2

Highly suggest checking reviews, then saving a small amount more and getting something else (like a Steam Deck). Just my 2c after researching handhelds recently. Cheers

    • +3

Don't trust reviews for the MSI Claw, as many reviews didn't take into consideration recent driver updates. It's not groundbreaking, but it is MUCH better than it was a year ago. I'd say at least 60% better perfomance-wise across the board. Probably a lot more in fringe cases

      • +2

I grabbed one in the past and yeah it’s pretty solid now.

I enjoy it more than my Legion Go. Mostly also because of the VRR that makes things feel smoother.

And actual updates, unlike the Go. Especially for GPU drivers. Granted the Go has a beautiful screen.

        • +1

I have both and the LeGo destroys it! Also the LeGo works with my eGPU Razer Chroma Core X with the RTX2080S. The MSI is finniky, although it works, but it loops into entering password & the virtual keyboard doesn't pop up. It is very good value for what it is, but it's no LeGo. You don't see LeGO's going for this price!

          • @vinni9284: How about the LeGo S2 ?

            • +2

@vash12: I haven't got that one, only the LeGO original. It's an awesome machine and the 8.8' screen really gives it another level. The Claw's screen is miniscule in comparison. But for under $500, you can't go wrong with the Claw.

    • The device is very different to what it was at launch. Greatly improved performance with many updates.

At this price point, there’s nothing that can beat it.

      • 2nd hand Ally Z1 Extreme for $450?

        • If you don’t care about a defective SD card and inferior battery and sticks, probably.

  • How many of these was actually available?

  • Damn, this is an incredible price. You can't even get a mini PC or SBC at this price for this kind of spec. Yet, this thing comes with a vrr screen with hall effect joy stick controller, which is atleast $150 extra for to the cheapest after market solutions. Not to mention the engineering required to make it a compact device.

    • Was thinking this too
Maybe should have picked up the 1tb which had a 155h…

  • +1

1TB model still available in good condition only for $485.20.

    • +1

      I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it.

      • It's the u7 model too

        • Didn't see that. Definitely worth it then.

          • +1

@Rochie: As unintuitive as it sounds, the i5 is a better buy for gaming than the i7.

They share the same graphics card and the same power budget, but the CPU side of the i7 is more power hungry and starves the graphics card, ends up having worse performance.

      • U need it bro

      • You do need it. You deserve it. You should buy it.

        • I would but I just bought a Switch 1 so I might be tapped out on gaming handhelds for the moment.

          • @corgi-runner: Sell the Switch.

With the MSI Claw you can download switch games for free.

And most exciting of all you can even play Pippin games for free.

            • @SarcasticEmu: I had that feeling, but unfortunately, Switch emulation is not particularly fantastic and battery life does not go a long way either. :(

Granted that I only tried Zelda BOTW, but it ran like hot garbage. Got similar or better performance from Galaxy S24 Ultra.

    • +1

Finally decided to bite the bullet and grabbed one. Thanks for the heads-up.

    • Thanks, got one 🙏🏼

      • Did you get any delivery details yet? Or am I being optimistic… 🤣

        • Mine is listed as "Processing".

        • Just got a shipping notification. :-)

  • Only the U7, 16GB, 512GB available now, at a higher price than the 1TB U7 was going for before (I think). Looks like $573.20 for Refurb: Excellent and $549.20 for Refurb: Good with all the codes applied.

At that price you can probably find a Claw on Marketplace for cheaper.

  • +2

Seems they have jacked the price now, and magically some of the 'excellent' ones are now available?

    • +1

Im assuming the codes probably weren't supposes to stack.
