Can these be used to pay bills at the post office?

    • +9

      No.

Around the start of 2024, Australia Post was blocked as a merchant on Westfield eftpos gift cards.

  • +33

I love fees on gift cards
"you pay us extra to give us your money with the promise of something in return within a certain time frame"

  • +14

How is this even considered a deal?

    • +8

Amex offer, NAB Goodie, Westpac group offer, Amex -> balance

      • As outlined in Deal Description

        But that's the real Deal

    • +6

helps to hit minimum spend to trigger bonus points etc with certain CC's

Cost effective way to launder money?

      • No that's the pokies..

        Sorry not cost effective.

  • Can this be used to purchase Vanilla Visa GC at Woolworths or any other prepaid Visa, Master or Eftpos GC at Woolworths or Coles?

    • -1

Even if it works what would be the point of that?

      • +11

        Money laundering most likely.

        • +1

Yep. Called layering by going through one prepaid balance to another, preferably with no fees.

      • Signing up to things for free 30 day trials where your credit card has been used before, like Door Dash or UberEats and getting free promos.

        • +2

Easier to use Revolut for this

    • At Coles, probably.

At Woolworths, no. Woolworths' checkouts should automatically reject a Westfield eftpos gift card as soon as you swipe it on the EFTPOS terminal, returning an Items Not Allowed. The checkout will call over a staff member before letting you pay using a different payment method.

  • Any way to use these online? Maybe swap for some Visa/Master prepaid debit card or something? Got some money in Visa Activs that for some reason are not accepted to pay ATO and some other services online and was looking for a way to swap them for something else that works. Tried to use them to load money into QantasPay but no luck.

    • Doesn't make sense to swap the card. If the visa or mastercard is fee free, why didn't you just buy then directly with a credit card.

      • Makes sense if you're trying to hide or wash dirty money. Just look at crypto, swap crypto into another crypto then back to make sure the trail harder to find. Same deal here if you ask me.

      • What do you mean? Aren't these eftpos only? If these eftpos could be somehow swapped for Visa/Master prepaid cards, I could use them to pay ATO with no surcharge and still get points from my credit card. I only mentioned the Visa Activ because I've got some and even though they are supposed to work anywhere Visa is accepted, they are not working to pay ATO.

        • Blackhawk Network - the owner of the Activ Visa gift card scheme - has blocked transactions at the ATO on Activ Visa gift cards since day one (back in late 2022).

The Activ Visa gift card terms and conditions specify:

          • In clause 1, transactions at the ATO are prohibited.

          • In clause 9, transactions at merchants using MCC 9311 are prohibited. Transactions at the ATO (via myTax or Government EasyPay) have in the past used that MCC.

Blackhawk Network has a habit of blocking transactions at the ATO for any prepaid gift cards they own, as they previously also did this for OnlyONE Visa gift cards.

Also, Westfield eftpos gift cards can only be used in-person at merchants that accept swipe payments from prepaid eftpos gift cards. It cannot be used for over-the-phone nor online payments.

        • I still don't get it. If they can be swapped, you'd still have to pay the fees on the visa/mastercard prepaid gift card just like if you buy them with a credit card

          • @Save 50 Cent: Westfield offers both eftpos and a digital Visa card, was just wondering if there was a way to swap them or something. Buying a Visa/Master with a fee wouldn’t make sense.

            • +1

@mauza: I suspect Westfield does not offer an exchange from the eftpos version to the Visa version as a standard service, because there is nothing on the Westfield website to suggest this is something you can request.

Considering Westfield apparently will not extend the expiry of a Westfield eftpos gift card as a goodwill gesture, I doubt Westfield would be willing to help you exchange the eftpos version for the Visa version as a once-off, especially if you purchase a Westfield eftpos gift card with a face value larger than $200 (which appears to be the largest face value available for the Westfield digital gift card).

      • Westfield cards are pretty restrictive, it is definitely a good idea to swap them out at a reasonable cost.

  • May I ask what's the maximum value available on a single card?

Seems 200 online. I assume the same for in-store. Thanks.

    • +2

      $500 just bought one

      • Thanks! $500 would be more useful as I can take care 1.5 less card =]

    • $995

      • That was the good old days. Now it is just 500.

  • +8

IMHO Westfield gifts cards are trash. Not all stores in Westfield accept them and they have an expiry date too. I had a $500 gift card with Westfield which I had forgotten about during Covid.

When I remembered I had the card, it had expired by just over 30 days. Westfield would not honour the card or extend the use by date, so Westfield got $500 for nothing. I know it was my fault for forgetting about the card, but why they even have an expiry date is crazy. They should be like gift cards from Apple, Amazon, Woolworths or Coles etc which don't have expiry dates.

    • +1

Usually I just use a dedicated eftpos GC (And only 1 at a time) in Aldi. Really just Aldi to dodge the surchange and keep GC management clean.

    • +2

Westfield cards are just eftpos cards. You can use them at any merchant in or out of Westfield that accepts eftpos in person, except for Auspost.

    • +1

Coles gift cards have expiry dates

    • Not all stores in Westfield accept them

Just about all stores that accept EFTPOS, can accept a Westfield card, they just don't know it.

      • Many stores have a minimum $ amount for EFTPOS. The coffee shop which I went to in Westfield and tried to pay with a Westfield gift card (as it only had a small balance left), would not accept it. The thing with Westfield gift cards is unlike other gift cards, they usually charge you an administration fee, have an expiry date and is not accepted everywhere. You are better off giving someone cash than a Westfield gift card.

  • I buy gift cards at the checkout to save 4-5%

    • Don't know why you were negged. I do that at the servo too.

      • What gift cards and the check out is he referring to?

    • Sorry, but which checkout are you referring to?

      • +1

When I arrive at the checkout, I open my giftcard app and purchase the amount I need then use it to pay?

        • What gift card app gives you an instant gift card, as distinct from having to wait hours or days?

    • what check out is that? self serve

  • no service fee on cash tho

    • +1

You dont get discount/bonus pts withdrawing cash on your credit cards.

  • This is the world we living in. (profanity) up

  • Can these be recharged?

  • avoiding Visa, Mastercard or American Express surcharges (e.g. at ALDI).

So what's weird is that, almost 2 years ago I can select either Visa or eftpos on my Apple wallet (using iPhone tap to pay), then that option randomly disappeared. But, whenever I shop at Aldi, it automatically charges my ANZ Visa card using eftpos so I don't get any surcharge. Not sure why or how this happened, couldn't find any information about it.

almost 2 years ago I can select either Visa or eftpos on my Apple wallet (using iPhone tap to pay), then that option randomly disappeared.

It sounds like you are running an iPhone running iOS 18 or later (or an Apple Watch running watchOS 11 or later).

In September 2024, Apple started enforcing least-cost routing (LCR) for any dual-network debit cards added to Apple Pay on an iPhone or Apple Watch running one of the software versions above. Merchant-choice routing means the merchant (not you) chooses the network the payment goes through, with the idea that the merchant would choose the payment network that incurs them the lowest fee. This is fine if you do not care about the payment network, but if you want to force the payment through a specific network for a specific reason (e.g. you need to spend using the Visa network to be eligible for a cashback promotion on your purchase, you need to spend using the eftpos network to do eftpos cashout at a merchant), you cannot do that anymore with Apple Pay.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has been promoting LCR for a while as a way for merchants to reduce the cost of EFTPOS payment processing, so it is not surprising to see Apple Pay and Google Pay support LCR in some form.

I have two dual-network debit cards added before I upgraded to iOS 18 and am still able to choose between the credit network (Visa/Mastercard) and eftpos, and therefore force payments through the network of my choice. I also added a new dual-network debit card after upgrading to iOS 18, and I cannot choose between Visa/Mastercard and eftpos. However, when I check the card number, I can see both the Visa/Mastercard and eftpos card numbers.

If you deleted then re-added your dual-network debit card after your device was upgraded to iOS 18, that would likely explain the fact that your ability to choose between Visa and eftpos has disappeared.

Personally, I prefer the approach Google Pay appears to be taking with LCR, as that appears to give you the choice between Visa/Mastercard, eftpos and "auto" (i.e. LCR).

whenever I shop at Aldi, it automatically charges my ANZ Visa card using eftpos so I don't get any surcharge.

ALDI has been forcing contactless payments from physical dual-network debit cards through the eftpos network for at least a couple of years now, so it would not surprise me if ALDI was also forcing contactless payments from LCR-enabled cards from Apple Pay (or for cards set to "auto" on Google Pay) through the eftpos network.

couldn't find any information about it.

There was not a lot of fan-fare about this change, but there was an OzBargain forum post about it at the time, plus Apple quietly updated this page to point out that they support LCR.

Wow, Wookie you are a legend. Pretty much answered this 'mystery' I long wanted answers to (but was too lazy to actually put in more work to find answers). This is the first time I heard about LCR, so thank you very much for taking your time to answer!

If you deleted then re-added your dual-network debit card after your device was upgraded to iOS 18, that would likely explain the fact that your ability to choose between Visa and eftpos has disappeared.

Actually, I upgraded to the iPhone 16 Pro Max last year after using my iPhone 11 since 2019. Before I sold off my 11 I upgraded it to iOS 18 but can still select between Visa and eftpos, exactly as you said. But of course, had to add my card to my new phone and was not able to select anymore. I actually contacted Apple support about this, but they were pretty much clueless as well as to why.

I always preferred eftpos over Visa because it would directly debit the money as I hated having transactions marked as 'Pending' on my account, whereas with eftpos it clears right away.

Should never charged a fee in the first place…

    • +3

Should be sold for a discount to be honest. All they're doing is limiting where you can spend your money to their business.

  • +1

I use prepaid eftpos primarily at Aldi - I spend around $6000/yr there (it's the main place I do my grocery shopping) and at 0.5% that's around $300/yr in fees. This way I get to earn full Amex points (1.125 Qantas points per dollar) at Aldi.

I also sometimes use them anywhere else that charges a fee for credit card use (off the top of my head - GP, chemist, some cafes) so I can still earn full rewards points and avoid the fee.

  • Looks like a father's day promo because it ends 7 Sept.
