Unleaded Petrol 128.5c at United Petrol Station in Taylors Lakes [Melbourne]

600

Hey guys,
Was driving through Taylors Lakes just then and spotted unleaded petrol was 128.5c at United petrol station in Taylors Lakes (corner of Melton Hwy & Kings Rd). Great deal since the rest of Melbourne seems to be at about 149c. In fact the Shell petrol station directly is at 149.9c for unleaded.

Didnt check the price of diesel but E10 unleaded was 124.5c. It's probably gonna change again tomorrow, so go stock up for the weekend if you're still in Melbourne!

  • That United is fairly new, and every time I've gone past there it always seems to be way cheaper than the Shell across the street. Maybe I've just gone past at good times. There's a Caltex near there as well, and more petrol stations down the street, so maybe prices could be continually low to try and get an edge on the others.

Either way, good prices, so might as well capitalise. Hopefully it stays that way.

    • Yeah, It used to be a Mobil fuel station, back in the day (a couple of years ago).

Just noticed it tonight that it's changed to United.

Ahh Fair Dinkim, you're doing the nation proud on the day of cold beer and burnt red meat. On ya mate!

It's probably mixed with donkey sweat.

  • Petrol price is already dropping fast. Australia probably has the 2nd largest oil deposits in the world now. Inb4 oil cheaper than water.

    • +9

We have shale oil, not oil. Makes a huge difference, as it is actually very expensive to extract before you get it near a refinery.

      • +5

That may need updating after the news this week of LARGE shale oil deposits being found in SA.

        • Unfortunately, large does not mean recoverable from the ground. It could be just 3.5 billion barrels, the exact figure is not known yet.

  • looking at petrol price reaching $1.5 and beyond this price is good enough

Gaaaah you bastard, this was my little secret! The reason for the cheap price? There's a brand spanking new United (as in, newly built) further down the Melton highway, near the Hillside area.

That new United has been at 128.5 for around two weeks now (even since it opened I think - it really is brand new) - they don't have a "cycle" at the moment. The other petrol stations down the road have been matching that price. I think they did this as an opening special to try to grab some of the market.

I've no idea how long it'll last, but I've been making the most of that price for a few weeks now (I drive past it on the way to work).

no worries mate. it's not like you will buy the whole tanker of petrol there. plenty more to share.

      • +2

I might not, but what if Broden sees this…. :D

        • +4

He's already bought 10 tankers and sold them to shell across the road for a nice profit, so he says.

  • The United? On the corner of Boronia Rd and Scoresby rd was 1.33

Since when do we put petrol prices here?

    • +3

      A bargains a bargain right?.

      • True, but petrol prices fluctuate so much - sure they can be expensive, but can drop as well. We have a few stations around here for the same price but we just go to fuelwatch, not post on ozbargain. Just seems like a strange place to put it.

        • -1

Besides the point, its not exactly difficult to purchase petrol and not pay the 38.9c fuel excise.

Since oil companies made us feel like we're heading towards the days of Mad Max ;-)

  • nice price

  • I am sceptic about these non-popular brands, do you think they would add 'fillers'? or the pumps cheat on the amount of fuel that goes through? hmm, we'll never know

    • Non-popular? United are one of the biggest… Shell,bp, caltex, 7/11… United is up there too… They have rebranded a lot of stores too.

    • +1

The pumps are regulated and tested and must be within 1mL per litre.

The fillers is something I don't know about.

What I do know is that before Woolworths/Safeway teamed up with Caltex there were several instances among friends, relatives and work colleagues where they had damaged injectors or expenses associated with getting adulterated fuel out of their tanks. My brother spent $400+ and a lady at work over $1200. A few people who filled up nowhere else but Woolies stations had successful claims.

I believe it's one of the reasons Woolies hunted down Caltex as a partner.

      • Adulterated?

Chances are one or more of the underground tanks were seeping ground water and dirt/scale/rust due to age, pretty common at older servos (10 years +) Shell/Coles are proactively replacing all sites with new underground/overhead tanks as they become an issue.

For example the BP at Beresfield is one of the larger BP diesel truck stops from Sydney to Brisbane, they have had a nightmare run of water and contaminate in the diesel (one of the companies i worked for ran up almost 90k's worth of repairs from water damage) they have now pumped the tanks dry, temp repaired the holes and have setup a brand new 100,000 tank in the roof whilst they wait for new tanks to arrive from spain.

Easily be a million bucks worth of lost product and repair costs, ontop of the lost revenue of being out of commission.

Oh and they do take complaints seriously, Shell does in particular they send out testers on a regular basis to ensure they are compliant with the minimum ron specifications both at a refinery/terminal/distribution/end sale point.

  • my local bp has been selling petrol for 129c for the last 6 months.

  • Today on the way to Geelong the Shell petrol had it on 127.9 cents so even cheaper (but need that 8c voucher)… but sorry was on the highway and didn't think it was wise to post it on Ozbargain at that time.

    • The caltex/safey and coles/shell stations down the road to this United in Taylors Lakes are selling at the same 128.5, and that's without the voucher. If you use the voucher, it's 120.5 :)

  • It's sad when $1.285 is considered exceptionally cheap for a litre of petrol, isn't it?

Also, I'd warn people from getting petrol from independent places (no clue if this is independent - I assume so) - the quality of the petrol rarely gives me good mileage in comparison to BP or Shell. You save in the long run buying better quality petrol.

    • +1

You do realise right that all petrol comes from one of the big 3's refineries (Shell, BP or Caltex) and for regular petrols they are exactly the same product.

Source: i do fuel delivery on some of my days off.

      • So why do I get about 50ks less when I go independent?

This isn't me being committed to a brand, this is my pedometer telling me I have driven less on a full tank.

        • Because there are that many variables for fuel economy its not funny. Even a barometric change of 20mb can drastically alter your economy. Things like tyre pressure, traffic infront of you, vehicle weight and so on.

Its definitely the exact same product, the gantries that the United tankers around here load from (Caltex Terminal) are exactly the same we use for Caltex (Woolworths)exactly the same loading arms and the same product classification on the overhead pipings.

The only one that is different is the 100 and E85 which have a specialist area for loading, and those two are the only products that are different (and treated differently)

        • Three refineries but all they also sole distributors? Wondering if there are middle men who add fillers and sell cheaper… I dont know. Just asking…

        • May or may not happen at the terminal you refer to but terminals can have storage arrangements with independent importers who do not have their own terminals.
Under that arrangement they can store product(same product, different "brand") in a tank hosted by the terminal and load it onto their tankers at that terminal.
ie. United acquires a shipment of fuel from Asia and has it delivered to the tanks at that terminal, be it Mobil, Caltex etc.

Obviously there is more to it but that's the general gist of what could be possible.
We do import 10-15% of our petroleum products.

        • The 10-15% is only specialist fuels (at this stage though in the next two years that figure will be 50%+ as Clyde, Kurnell, Botany, Kiwana, Pikenba and Lytton are shut) as i already said there is a few specialist fuels that are loaded separately that arent on the gantries, but these aren't common fuels at all.

For common fuels its all the same product, 98 octane is where the products differ substantially, and the big 3 all use completely different additive packages, for 91 and 95 though its all much of a muchness.

All comes from the same crude anyways.

    • It's good that $1.28 is cheap (if not a little saddening it's not higher!); it's a finite resource which destroys the environment from the moment one starts exploring for it, to it's extraction, to it's use.

Of course I still use petrol, but I for one cannot wait til renewable based electric is viable.

      • "[rant about the horrific nature of petrol]…Of course I still use petrol…"

        Get off your soapbox, hypocrite.

    • I don't think it's sad that $1.28 is exceptionally cheap. At that price it's about 30% more expensive than the cheapest milk, cheaper than bottled water and beer. Considering it gets you places, has a huge environmental cost, takes millions of years to form, and huge amounts of efforts to extract and export, I think $1.28 is too cheap (cf ~2.50 EUR in Europe). A higher price would maybe make people realise the value and environmental cost of petrol.

  • Okay guys…. to update this thread, considering I drive down this highway every day…

The new United is still 128.5, but the other petrol stations (shell, caltex) are no longer price matching and are back to around 146 or so.

I had been using the other stores to get my petrol at the cheaper price, this time I actually used the new United… and to be honest I wasn't very impressed.

They only have ONE kind of non-ethanol petrol - Regular Unleaded 91, which is what I ended up filling up the car with. I was hoping they had some better fuel than that!

They seem mainly focused on Ethanol, and sell E10, "Premium 100" (which I'd never heard of before, but it had an ethanol sticker on it) and E85.

  • When United started up in Bundaberg area they said they were going to change to competition big time. But they only beat the competition by 1-2c which makes it better to use your 4c voucher at Woolies. Anyway you guys are really lucky there as we are paying 148.9c/l here. So the 20c would be heaven. Cheers

FYI - Both of the United stores in Melton Highway are still selling petrol for 128.5 …. the other stores (Shell / Caltex etc) are all at 154! No idea how they're getting any sales really with United stuck at that price!
