Domino's Australian franchise operator swings to first annual loss, shares fall 21%

(Reuters) -Domino's Pizza Enterprises posted its first annual loss on Wednesday since going public two decades ago, triggering a 21% share slump, the steepest decline in nearly two months for the Australian pizza chain operator.

Domino's Pizza Enterprises, the largest master franchise of the U.S.-based Domino's Pizza, has undergone management changes across its Australia, New Zealand, and Asia operations, with the latest being the planned departure of CEO and Managing Director Mark van Dyck before Christmas.

Now spearheaded by Executive Chair Jack Cowin, the company reported an annual loss of A$3.7 million ($2.40 million), a sharp decline from the profit of A$96 million recorded last year, and also missed a Visible Alpha consensus of A$14.5 million profit.

Shares of the company slumped to A$15.28, marking their lowest point since July 2. As of 0444 GMT, the stock was the worst performer in the broader ASX 200 benchmark index, which was up 0.1%.

The pizza chain operator rose to prominence in 2021 as the pandemic lifted demand for deliveries, but has since struggled with rising costs, intense competition from delivery platforms, and the emergence of rivals such as Sydney-listed burrito chain Guzman y Gomez, all while facing pressure to expand aggressively overseas.

The company has also been hit hard by ongoing weak performance in two of its key markets, Japan and France, with store closures in the latter significantly impacting its bottom line.

Waning post-pandemic demand and rising input costs in Japan further squeezed its profit in one of its biggest markets.

Earlier this year, the pizza chain operator closed 233 loss-making stores in the East Asian country.

"Management changes, failure to gain meaningful market share in key regions such as Japan and Germany, and uncertainty around increased discounts and pricing sparked investor concerns over the strategic direction of Australia's largest pizza player," said Grady Wulff, senior market analyst at Bell Direct.

The company also warned of a bleak start to the new financial year, with like-for-like sales declining 0.9% in the first seven weeks, in sharp contrast with the growth expectations of 3.1% in the first six months of the year.

Domino's Pizza Enterprises declared a final dividend of 21.5 Australian cents per share.

                  Is it CBA at $20

                  • @cloudy: In terms of Shares, had Woodside Petroleum WPL for $21 and sold for $33. But that's not a biggie. I purchased a bunch of ETH when it was $800. But I'm HODLing

          Never again!
They're all crooks, to take money and lie in all the shareholder's meetings.

ASIC are hopeless too and won't investigate many companies, as they are stretched (or so they said, until referred to the NACC, in the last 2 years).

We used to semi-regularly get Domino's (using coupons of course). The store near us moved to a different location further away, so we started buying from a local independent pizza store. Yes the pizzas are more expensive at $26.95 but they are New Yorker style and huge. One pizza feeds 4 adults and is delicious. We would have spent that much at Domino's anyway as we needed 3-4 pizzas to satisfy us.

What an interesting announcement which coincides with a decision that my community group made recently. We’ve been ordering Domino’s monthly for years now. A few months ago, we all noticed that the large pizzas seemed to be a little bit smaller than usual and that this is now their new normal.

As the person who handles our pizza orders, I also noticed that this observation came around the time the pizza prices went up - and that's even factoring in the use of discount vouchers. I did not tell our participants that the pizza price went up - the shrinking size was something that someone else voiced out and others said they were thinking the same thing. I did not comment about the change of price or the size.

Domino’s has worked well for our group because it’s convenient to order and easy to transport to our events. However, we’ve recently made the decision to stop ordering from them because the value simply isn’t there anymore. Instead, we're going to go with an independent pizza joint near where we meet which is surprisingly just a little bit more expensive overall for a better quality product.

    • A few months ago?

I haven't ordered dominoes for over a year.

About 5 years ago they reduced the size, surely they couldn't have reduced it any further a few months ago.

      • Yes that's correct they did reduce the size about 5 years ago (much to our dismay a 'medium' pizza is now a 'large' pizza. They have reduced the size yet again.

        • If they reduced it again, it’s now a kids pizza

  • I haven’t bought a Domino’s in 15-20 years.
I’ve had it when work put a pizza lunch on but didn’t enjoy it as the lack of ingredients tasted crap.

When they reduced the size the first time was when I stopped buying it.
If I buy pizza I go to my local, yes it’s double the price but the ingredients seem superior, plenty of topping and a real size that feeds more than one person.

Independent is my first choice and on a rare occasion I’ll get Pizza Hut or occasionally make my own.
I won’t be buying Dominoes ever unless there is a major change.

    • The fact you said you'd get pizza hut before dominos says to me it has been a long time since you've gotten dominos. PH is actually dog food imho.

    • Some may argue real pizzas do not have plenty of toppings.

  • Not surprised as the quality of the pizzas is awful.

  • I actually had it for the first time in ages yesterday. Tasted great! Small portions though that's for sure. Also struggled to find good discounts so probably paid the most I've ever paid for dominos.

Surprised it took that long. Their pizza's taste like crap. I prefer Pizza Hut over Dominos any day but both dont taste very good anymore. In fact unless i get pizza from a good restaurant(which happens rarely), i only make pizza at home now. Much cheaper, healthier and tastier.

    • Unlikely much cheaper if you factor in time, labour, electricity, good quality cheese and other ingredients.

dominos stuffed up when they added a surcharge to basically everything including late night order surcharge….

  • Can't say i'm surprised… Stopped ordering anything from them going on to close to 2 years now, used to be ok as a cheap quick dinner on a weekend if we were running around and had no time to cook but had a couple of orders that were basically a tiny cooked pizza base with ingredients you can count on one hand it was never generous before but if you can count the beef on the beef and onion pizza your screwing it up… i complained the second time and got a "free" pizza voucher but never bothered to even redeem it or order again… recently i had a look at the "deals" and they were not at all cheap anymore, i get better family meal packs from the local lebanese charcoal chicken store and it's a lot more food!

Best of luck to them… hopefully they have gotten a wake up call.

    "I'm doing my part!"

My local Pizza Hut uses so little cheese, it's hard to call what they sell Pizza. I'd say they sell sauced pita. The Dominos in my area does a pretty good job, the only issue I have with them is their meatlovers is pretty bad. I think that's because of the cheap meat they use.

  • Domino's isn't cheap enough compared to pizza hut so I go and get pizza hut instead all the time

  • If they get rid of the coupons and deals than it's going to be goodnight Dominos.
Sizing and quality/quantity of toppings has been declining for quite some time, next step for them is a few random toppings and cheese on a bread roll.
Pizza Hut has of late been getting good again that I have noticed, I go into one at lunch and get their mini pizza, half Garlic Bread and Coke deal for $7.95 and the amount of toppings on their mini pizza puts a dominos large to shame.

  • Why is ozb helping scammers ? they can die. Shit pizzas. shrink the sizes.

  • I stopped getting Domino's quite some time ago in favor of using a local pizza place who's quality and pizza size/value for money is way, way better. I think the last Domino's pizza I had was in like 2019.

  • If they still done the chefs best, i would help them by being a regular customer

  • What always pissed me off was dominoes website.
    1. You order a pizza
    2. Coupons rarely work (for good deals, crap ones did)
Put in coupons and then have to pay massive surcharges and premiums etc.
You $40 deal for 3x pizzas and 2 sides pickup is now $60 or $70 because… premium pizza surcharge - how is a pizza with 3 toppings premium…
    Crust surcharge
Late night surcharge (since when was 9pm late?)
Add in surge pricing that changed at different times and it was always a mess that I got burned with.
The food, while hot, was always substandard, never tasted like real dough or cheese…
What additives have they been adding?
    … like will satisfy in a pinch…but far out…

We haven’t had Dominos since we got our Costco membership, 16 bucks pepperoni pizza that feeds the whole family.

    • once a costco pizza competitor arrives - that place will skyrocket in sales because pizzas the size of costcos typically go for $25-$30, my local charges $26 for about the same size as the costco pepperoni one

Sorry in advance, I received a code for my local Domino's, not sure how or where to post it. So i decided the forums? Hopefully someone can add it please, thanks.

    • Thanks.

Your code has been posted here now.

  • I was going to say how could they be making a loss when pizza prices have gone up a lot and they don't heavily discount anymore until I saw it was due to losses in other countries. I guess they could raise the prices over so they try to claw some back in this country

  • ha ha. What a surprise!

Ever since the management change, their coupons are rubbish and I haven't been buying their pizzas like I used to quite regularly. My store here in Redcliffe, QLD makes quality pizzas, however, the corporate changes have brought a ridiculous loss of value for the customer.

I have been thinking for a long time now that there will surely be tons of others who see it that way too and I've been waiting to see the backlash.

The (good value) coupons for single pizza or 2 pizzas stopped. I do not want sides. And with the coupons, I'd always add quite a few extra toppings or sometimes get the extra large instead of large, but it would still be a respectable price. All I can find is $30 for 2 pizzas and 2 sides. With the topping additions and crusts etc? No thanks.

Shame on the new corporate management. You have no idea! Why in hell would you change what was working?!
This is what GREED gets you.

  • +1

Yeah, nah. That's it for me too.

Their "price reduction" to $13 for a traditional pizza. In combination with the fact that coupons stopped working that actually is a price increase of 30-40%.

Pity they drove Eagle Boys out of business only to go downhill ever since.

    R.I.P.
