Domino's Australian Franchise First Annual Loss In 20 Years

Can OzB improve Domino's bottom-line ?

What's OzB role in all this? 🤔

Domino's Australian franchise operator swings to first annual loss, shares fall 21%

(Reuters) -Domino's Pizza Enterprises posted its first annual loss on Wednesday since going public two decades ago, triggering a 21% share slump, the steepest decline in nearly two months for the Australian pizza chain operator.

Domino's Pizza Enterprises, the largest master franchise of the U.S.-based Domino's Pizza, has undergone management changes across its Australia, New Zealand, and Asia operations, with the latest being the planned departure of CEO and Managing Director Mark van Dyck before Christmas.

Now spearheaded by Executive Chair Jack Cowin, the company reported an annual loss of A$3.7 million ($2.40 million), a sharp decline from the profit of A$96 million recorded last year, and also missed a Visible Alpha consensus of A$14.5 million profit.

Shares of the company slumped to A$15.28, marking their lowest point since July 2. As of 0444 GMT, the stock was the worst performer in the broader ASX 200 benchmark index, which was up 0.1%.

The pizza chain operator rose to prominence in 2021 as the pandemic lifted demand for deliveries, but has since struggled with rising costs, intense competition from delivery platforms, and the emergence of rivals such as Sydney-listed burrito chain Guzman y Gomez, all while facing pressure to expand aggressively overseas.

The company has also been hit hard by ongoing weak performance in two of its key markets, Japan and France, with store closures in the latter significantly impacting its bottom line.

Waning post-pandemic demand and rising input costs in Japan further squeezed its profit in one of its biggest markets.

Earlier this year, the pizza chain operator closed 233 loss-making stores in the East Asian country.

"Management changes, failure to gain meaningful market share in key regions such as Japan and Germany, and uncertainty around increased discounts and pricing sparked investor concerns over the strategic direction of Australia's largest pizza player," said Grady Wulff, senior market analyst at Bell Direct.

The company also warned of a bleak start to the new financial year, with like-for-like sales declining 0.9% in the first seven weeks, in sharp contrast with the growth expectations of 3.1% in the first six months of the year.

Domino's Pizza Enterprises declared a final dividend of 21.5 Australian cents per share.

      This

When you go from a large pizza feeding 2 people, to basically just 1 person, it's gonna stop people going back

There are plenty of brands that screwed up so badly these past few years that I won't ever buy their products ever again…

The portion sizes are so comically small that I just get disappointed. The price doesn't even matter. Every time I consume the products I just remember that they used to be better and now they are unsatisfying.

        • +1

The Domino's pizzas are so laughably small now, they had to re-design their custom smaller than usual pizza boxes a second time (after shrinking their "large" pizza sizes again) to fold in two of the corners, so the now even more limp tiny pizzas don't constantly slide around.

      • +3

It's still been cheap compared to other meal options though when the inevitable 30-40% off vouchers from the OzB Dominos page are applied.

They have consistency issues across stores - my local makes great pizza. I've fed whole parties who all compliment it and ask what I ordered because its better than they get. I then hear others complain about Dominos, and sometimes I buy it from other stores and I know why - some stores are crap and nothing like what I get from my local.

My issue lately has been they have changed it so that the first two equivalent topping substitutions are no longer free - WTF!
That's a rip off move. If I don't eat something, why can't I substitute an equivalent value alternative anymore. On some pizzas I remove meat types, which should be the more expensive topping, and it still won't even let me substitute that now with a vegetable without a charge. I used to do things like that and it was no charge until the third substitution - then became $2 each or $1 depending on the type. That change pissed me off as there are me and people in my family that don't eat certain things and it was fair how it was before.

I stopped eating Dominos. It feels like eating cardboard.

Which year did you stop ?

There were always some good coupons here, on OzB.

You’re supposed to take the pizza out of the box.

  • +5

My opinion…..Dominos is too cheap! The problem is that the main commercial pizza vendors sell a very similar product with a similar price, basically a race to the bottom, so there is very little margin and thus profit. Consumers are now used to the poor quality ingredients and the cheap price.

As an example, Dominos pizzas in the UK are substantially more expensive than Australia, however, the pizzas are larger and better quality.

I very rarely eat Dominos/Pizza Hut and happily pay more to an independent pizza restaurant.

    • +3

I ate Dominos in Wanaka in New Zealand and it was way better than the Dominos we get in Melbourne.

      • +1

This seems to be the common trend. Dominos & PH are better everywhere else

        • +1

Yeah I don't know, they completely dominated the food delivery landscape in Australia from about '05-'15 by being cheaper than everyone else, previous to that Pizza Hut was the default for most. For a good decade every other takeaway delivery option was minimum $30 (and most didn't deliver past 9-10pm) while you could get Dominos delivered for around $20. Now with the introduction of UberEats since 2016 and the upping of their prices they have a lot more competitors in their price range.

          • +2

@Cheaplikethebird: Don't forget Eagle Boys, who also made decent pizza at a good price,
but they could not last long in this competitive pizza business.

            • +1

@whyisave: In my experience Eagle Boys was never really that popular. You'd have the odd person who was a big fan but most people favoured Pizza Hut.

            • +1

@whyisave: Unfortunately not all Eagle Boys stores were the same. Some were great, others not so much. The one in Tingalpa was good and lasted way past when many others had closed. In the end they became 3 Bears Pizza and are still open.

              • @dogboy: Same with Dominos - my local makes great pizza. Some others are crap.

            • @whyisave: I loved Eagle Boys!!

            • @whyisave: Wasn't eagle boys just a rebranded pizza haven?

        • +1

That applies to any fast food here. KFC and McDonalds are rubbish in Australia compared to almost anywhere else.

          • +1

@Hybroid: I thought it was commonly held that KFC is actually much better here than USA?

            • +1

@Aldonis: Could well be, there's far too many better options in the US (Churchs, Popeyes, Chick-fil-A) that I haven't actually tried KFC there. The sentiment still stands though, fast food here is generally terrible and overpriced.

After getting used to my local pizza shops several years ago, I couldn't bear putting Domino's pizza in my mouth. Quality difference is night and day, but price isn't that much more.

    • +1 for Domino's UK. When I moved to AU, I didn't realise Domino's here would be such a big quality drop. It seems to be extremely focused on price here, sacrificing anything and everything to make it cheaper, and it is absolute garbage. Even with most pizzas under $10, I almost never buy it.

    • 100% agree .
I am one of these customers that reflect Dominos decline .
Dominos has priced itself and its product as the cheapest in the market , something you buy for being the cheapest available.
Now to increase margins , they are increasing prices and trying to move upmarket , but the product is what it was before, greasy worst tasting pizzas that taste like they mix cardboard with the flour.
If I add a couple of dollars more, I can get proper pizzas that taste 10 times better .
So why would i buy dominos . Have probably brought dominos once in the last year , a few years back, i could easily order 2-3 times a month .
The C suite as always does not have a clue, they think having nifty apps and websites will get people to pay more for the pizzas and they wont notice the shit product.
Heres what you need to do, make better tasting pizzas if you want to charge more .

    • +2

I think a lot of this was because people got fooled by the cheaper 'Large' pizza price. At any other pizza store (including Pizza Hut), this would have been lucky to be a medium size.
Put people didn't seem to notice or mind. I fell for it once. When I realised how small a large pizza was from Domino's I just went else where and got better quality and larger.

But they kept people coming in with specials and coupons. Finally it is all catching up with them now.

      • +1

I think it’s quite a weird marketting technique to call their smaller pizza size “large” as well. It’s …literally the smaller size. They probably lose upsell profit from people who actually want a large.

  • +2

Can't recall the last time I ate their Pizza. Owners are free to skimp out on ingredients, due to their low cost offerings.

Good family size pizza's cost ~$25 in Perth, and are of far higher quality to whatever rubbish Dominos puts out.

    • Favourite pizza places in Perth?

      • Yes

    • That's fine if they are lower than the coupons.

  • +6

Probably because it's not good pizza and other smaller businesses offer better pizza at a competitive price.

  • +28

Oh boy, who would've thought that making pizzas smaller, cutting corners on quality and ingredients would lead to a drop in sales? Such surprise.

    • +4

This seems to be happening with a lot of restaurants. Although I am not happy with the price hikes, I understand why they go up, so I accept them.

But skimping on the quality and ingredients is an absolute no-no.

  • +6

I think most people would gladly pay a little extra for a quality pizza that's a decent serving size - which is why the pendulum has swung the other way and people are going back to their local independent pizza joints

    • Yeah and we're more health concious than we were ten years ago, especially young people. A lot of people are now budgeting calories as much as they are dollars, so if you're going to splurge and eat pizza you're willing to spend more to get something quality and make the most of it.

Dominoes for years claimed their secret was a highly developed delivery system, then they got busted for rampant under paying of staff across the franchise network.
Turns out, the secret to their profitability was the under paying.

  • +1

There are just better pizza places out there. With things like Uber eats getting pizza delivered is not restricted to the big chains.

  • Regardless of the quality of the pizza, which couldn't have changed much year-to-year, how in the heck was there a $100 million difference?

    • +1

The psychology of the share market probably creates some stronger reactions than in a normal situation.

I think normally in business you do your best, and if this year isn't as profitable as last year, then its disappointing but no biggie. But with the sharemarket, if you miss your sales target your a loser, no matter if it's by $1 or 100 million dollars. Given that, I think you strive to make your target, but once it becomes obvious that it's not going to happen, then you change tactics. Either you don't try very hard, or you go even further and do things that will worsen the loss. You're already going down, so you may as well go down hard.

That way, this year will be a major loss, which sucks, but it makes it easier next year.

Next year Jack Cowin can aim for a $5 million dollar profit, and then tell the press "We've returned Dominos to profit!". And then the year after that, aim for 10 million dollars. "We've doubled the profit of last year!" etc etc

  • -2

It's got nothing to so with the Pizza quality. If that were true then all fast foods would suffer the same fate.

We are seeing a generational shift in people's spending habits. This is it. I don't think Domino's slump will last long. They'll cut back on some stores and then introduce a rebrand, grow from there.

People forget that Dominoes had this exact same slump 15 or so years ago.

    • +1

I never go there because their pizza is shit. The only reason I've ever eaten it is because someone else paid for it.

  • After my local Italian family owned pizza shop who skimped on every ingredient and charged way too much, was taken over by an Asian businessman, I stopped using Dominos.

    • Asian man making the pizza or just owns the store?

      Prices dropped?

  • +3

Surprising. They've always been pretty great. Always pretty consistent and good quality. Would hate to see them go and replaced by others which are double the price for the same thing.

    • I agree that they are Always pretty consistent.

      Consistently mediocre.

I'll still eat it if someone orders it but wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.

  • +2

Don't care, they caused so many family businesses to die by opening up next to them and outpricing them to unsustainability.

    • but from all the comments here people are happy to go independent pizza stores instead of dominos.

      • +1

I think he/shes talking about when they first opened and they were better quality. And then once they got rid of the competition, they turned to crap

  • +1

I stopped eating at domino’s since they introduced the new voucher system. + plus$ for everything. That’s not a voucher. But damn I didn’t know I ate 100million a year in pizza, guess I did.

    I love my new
Local independent pizza shop, quality so much better and not even that much more expensive well worth it.

It's almost like people hate being ripped off with crap tasting stuff, fewer ingredients, and smaller pizzas for a higher price. Who could have guessed.

  • Bring back mr meij

I don't mind dominos pizzas but haven't gone their in over a year simply because of their stupid addon prices.

Take the simple 2 sides for $6 (well used to be $6) that was simple any 2 sides for $6 good deal, now it's a garlic bread and a 600ml drink, want a different side? it's between $2-$8 more, it's insane let alone how deceptive it is even if they have their small print saying different sides cost different amounts, it's a giant puzzle working out how much the end cost will be it's no longer simple. $24.95 used to getcha 2 pizzas and 2 sides delivered good enough deal for dominos quality but good luck these days because the pizza you like will be under some 'deluxe' category or some other BS and have addon prices.

They screwed themselves, they had a simple menu that for it's old price was good enough food, now they have addons on addons on addons that go on top of coupons that make it not worth it, a dominos pizza is not worth $15+

No one to blame but themselves for trying to squeeze every penny and do so in the most scummy way possible.

    • This is so they can promote cheap prices. Once you've made the decision to buy, you're more likely to just accept the extra charges here and there.

Of course, with the plethora of options available these days, I don't think this is working for them.

We get Domino's when we get a stonking good coupon, but the size of their pizzas are a joke. Anyone paying standard prices for those tiny things must be nuts.

  • Last time I wanted to order one, I saw that they have coupons for 30% off only, and my pizza cost like $14. No, thanks. Not worth it.

  • -1

Size of large pizza is ridiculously Large now, as it used to be.

Costco $16 pizzas is equal to about 3 large Domino's pizzas. Not to mention their dough feels like eating air.

  • Best pizza in Melbourne is here

  • I was going to say they’ve opened up so many stores here, maybe they expanded too quickly.

But after reading the article it sounds like the loss is coming from the Japan market, not the Australian one.

  • To be fair Domino is still one of the cheapest to feed 2 people when on sale 40%-50%. Maybe people now get used to the inflation and chase for better food or just simply eat at home. Colesworths runs rewards weekly to keep people in, then people have enough meat to cook and eat in.

Not sure why but my local marketplace has no domino.

  • My Local Pizza Joint is cheaper and make WAAAAAAY better Pizzas And NOT the Greesy filthy roten tasting Crap
    that DOMINOS has Become
And when i order a Large I GET A LARGE and NOt a SMALL pretending to be a Large

I am NOT in a Hurry to get a Pizza fromn Dominos thats for sure

      • +1

$16 and its a Proper large Pizza and the base is superb thin crispy and eaven the normal base one is fluffy and beautyful …. the old italian dude sold it to the delivery chinese guy that was there helping out in the klitchen for years And he makes it ner spot on the way it used to be made by the italian

And he remebers you by name …now cant say that about Dominos

Its a small plaze called " Star pizza " up golden grove way in Sa

  • Just sell us the better quality ingredients that they sell in SEA

  • We used to eat maybe once a month for my family of 4….stopped maybe a year ago.
Not more cheap coupons to use and cheaper alternatives for that fast food fix.

  • They are selling drinks for $9. And there is no alcohol in it. Tell 'em they're dreaming!

  • One of the worst pizzas I've ever had down under. I had Domino's in Canada last year which was great so I decided to try it here. Wasted my money and was embarrassed that I offered it to my kid's friends.

  • Once they had market share they should have kept the same quality and increased the price, people would have stayed because they knew what to expect.
    Reliability and consistency.

Instead they went the complete opposite way and reducing portion sizes and cutting costs every step of the way.

  • +1

It must be a coincidence but I stopped eating Dominos completely about 18 months ago - their quality became very poor and unbearable to me. In the meantime, Pizza hut has become much tastier so that is my go to Pizza

    • I don't know how Pizza Hut profits have changed over time, but IMO it was a huge mistake to race Domino's to the bottom of pizza quality. I remember when Pizza Hut was marketed at a classy family/ romantic couples place. Pizza Hut took reservations, a waiter led you to your table, romantic lighting. And excellent pizza. Man, that was a lifetime ago. "I know a place…"

  • Used to be alright pizza for an alright price, but it would be an absolute bargain if you hunted for coupons. You almost felt like you were a part of a secret club by finding some random coupon online that netted you a family feed for <$20. They were also on the front foot with online ordering, which was actually innovative and a fun novelty when it was first introduced.

Over time, pizzas and desserts have shrunk and quality has dropped. Now you have to really hunt for a coupon just to not be ripped off, otherwise you're stuck paying $20+ for a tiny, average pizza. It no longer feels like you're getting a deal, but rather negotiating your way out of getting extorted (and that's IF you can find a working coupon). Their tech innovation gave way to short lived gimmicks, with their online ordering platform becoming more antiquated by modern standards.

We used to semi-regularly get Domino's (using coupons of course). The store near us moved to a different location further away, so we started buying from a local independent pizza store. Yes the pizzas are more expensive at $26.95 but they are New Yorker style and huge. One pizza feeds 4 adults and is delicious. We would have spent that much at Domino's anyway as we needed 3-4 pizzas to satisfy us.

  • +1

What an interesting announcement which coincides with a decision that my community group made recently. We’ve been ordering Domino’s monthly for years now. A few months ago, we all noticed that the large pizzas seemed to be a little bit smaller than usual and that this is now their new normal.

As the person who handles our pizza orders, I also noticed that this observation came around the time the pizza prices went up - and that's even factoring in the use of discount vouchers. I did not tell our participants that the pizza price went up - the shrinking size was something that someone else voiced out and others said they were thinking the same thing. I did not comment about the change of price or the size.

Domino’s has worked well for our group because it’s convenient to order and easy to transport to our events. However, we’ve recently made the decision to stop ordering from them because the value simply isn’t there anymore. Instead, we're going to go with an independent pizza joint near where we meet which is surprisingly just a little bit more expensive overall for a better quality product.

    • A few months ago?

I haven't ordered dominoes for over a year.

About 5 years ago they reduced the size, surely they couldn't have reduced it any further a few months ago.

  • I haven’t bought a Domino’s in 15-20 years.
I’ve had it when work put a pizza lunch on but didn’t enjoy it as the lack of ingredients tasted crap.

When they reduced the size the first time was when I stopped buying it.
If I buy pizza I go to my local, yes it’s double the price but the ingredients seem superior, plenty of topping and a real size that feeds more than one person.

Independent is my first choice and on a rare occasion I’ll get Pizza Hut or occasionally make my own.
I won’t be buying Dominoes ever unless there is a major change.

    • The fact you said you'd get pizza hut before dominos says to me it has been a long time since you've gotten dominos. PH is actually dog food imho.

  • Not surprised as the quality of the pizzas is awful.

  • I actually had it for the first time in ages yesterday. Tasted great! Small portions though that's for sure. Also struggled to find good discounts so probably paid the most I've ever paid for dominos.

  • +1

Surprised it took that long. Their pizza's taste like crap. I prefer Pizza Hut over Dominos any day but both dont taste very good anymore. In fact unless i get pizza from a good restaurant(which happens rarely), i only make pizza at home now. Much cheaper, healthier and tastier.

  • +1

dominos stuffed up when they added a surcharge to basically everything including late night order surcharge….

  • Can't say i'm surprised… Stopped ordering anything from them going on to close to 2 years now, used to be ok as a cheap quick dinner on a weekend if we were running around and had no time to cook but had a couple of orders that were basically a tiny cooked pizza base with ingredients you can count on one hand it was never generous before but if you can count the beef on the beef and onion pizza your screwing it up… i complained the second time and got a "free" pizza voucher but never bothered to even redeem it or order again… recently i had a look at the "deals" and they were not at all cheap anymore, i get better family meal packs from the local lebanese charcoal chicken store and it's a lot more food!

Best of luck to them… hopefully they have gotten a wake up call.
